Description
PATENT rrionl JOHN PEOK, OF HAVERSTRAWV, NEIV YORK.
PROCESS OF BURNING BRICK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 708,394, dated September 2, 1902. Application filed May 23, 1902. Serial No. 108,679. (No specimens.)
T0 (ZZZ whom it mlcty concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PEOK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Haverstraw, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, haveinvented anew and Improved Process of Burning Brick, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to cheapen, as well as to render more effective, the work of burning brick in kilns. Heretofore oil and wood have been used extensively for this purpose; but soft coal has not been found capable of use in this manner, owing to the dense smoke which rises therefrom and tends to clog the interstices of the kiln. This invention seeks to enable soft coal to be employed, and it attains a decided advantage over other manners of burning the brick, since it is much cheaper and also produces a more regular and reliable fire.
In carrying out the invention after the kiln has been set up in the usual manner I fire the same through the arches with atomized oil. This produces an intense heat, which pervades the entire kiln and heats the brick. After this has been attained the oil-supply is cut off and a fire of soft coal or other suitable fuel is built in the arches, and this fire is maintained until the kiln has been entirely burned. The smoke rising from the coal passes through the interstices of the kiln and is completely consumed therein, owing to the high heat of the bricks attained by the oil burning, as before mentioned.
I am aware of the patent to Hamilton, No. 340,780, dated April 27, 1886, which discloses the process of burning brick with a fuel formed of coke and coal mixed. My invention is not to be confounded with the Hamilton process, since I claim specifically the use of atomized oil in the first stages of the firing and then the use of soft or bituminous coal or analogous fuel. The smoke rising is consumed in the interstices of the kiln, and thus the full benefit of the fuel is derived and an extremely regular and effective burning of the kiln is attained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The herein-described process of burning brick in kilns, which consists first in subjecting the kiln to the action of a fire fed with atomized oil and maintaining this fire until the kiln has been heated, and second, in stopping said oil-fire and continuing the burning of the kiln by a fire fed with soft or bituminous coal or other similar fuel.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN PEOK.
