SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,368, dated September 2, 1902.
Application filed August 26, 1901. Serial No. 73,238. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIC LEHMANN, a citizen of the United Statesof America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Burners, of which the following isa specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lamp-burners, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby a burner may be adjusted to diiferent heights when desired; furthermore, to provide means that will prevent the lamp from exploding.
The present invention consistsin the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and Wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved lamp-burner. Fig. 2-is a vertical sectional view thereof, showing the same secured to a lamp.
In the drawings, the reference-numeral 1 indicates the burner tube, 2 represents a sleeve slidingly secured thereon, 3 indicates the wick, and 4 represents a series of openings formed in the upper portion of the burner tube. 5 represents the burner proper. The upper end of this sleeve 2 has an inwardly-extending annular flange 2, formed integral therewith. The lower end of the burner tube has an outwardly extending flange formed integral therewith, which engages the inner circumference of the sleeve 2 and is held therein by frictional'contact. It will thus be seen that the upward move ment of tube 1 is limited by reason of the engagement of its flange 2" with flange 2'.
When it is desired to adjust the burner to any different height, the burner-tube is either raised or lowered to the desired height, the sleeve 2 being secured in the lamp. The sleeve 2 is rigidly secured in the lamp, in the opening therein.
In case the lamp is upset the openings 4.
will allow the oil to pass through the same, and the gas will be prevented from being ignited in the body portion of the lamp. Furthermore, the flame will be prevented from entering and extending through the burnertube.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction with out departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a lamp-burner, an integral sleeve of equal diameter throughout secured in the lamp, the edge of the upper extremity of said sleeve being bent inwardly to form an integral rightangular annular flange, an integral burnertube of equal diameter throughout adapted for sliding movement in said sleeve, the edge of the lower extremity of said burner-tube being bent outwardly to form an integral rightangular flange for frictional engagement with the inner circumference of said sleeve, the periphery of the burner-tube being frictionally engaged by said flange of the sleeve, the burner-tube having a series of openings near the upper end thereof, and lim ited in its upward movement by engagement of its flange with the flange of the sleeve, the said burner-tube being exteriorly threaded at its upper end to receive the burner, the oil when the lamp is upset traveling through the interior of the sleeve and the burner and flowing through the said openings in the burner-tube, both of said flanges frictionally engaging and securing the inner circumference of the sleeve and the periphery of the burner-tube in any position the burner-tube assumes, substantially as described.
