TOY-CARTRIDG E EXBLOD ER.'
f SPECIFICATION rowing pm of Letters raten@ No. 708,084, dated septemtr 23902;,- 7 Application mea october 1, 1901. serial No. 77,235. (No moana vToa/ZZ whom, it ntf/,y concern: Be it known that I, ROBERT L. SHORT, a citi-Y zen-ofthe United States, residing at Cleveland, in the' county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in ToylCartridge Exploders, .of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to an exploding device adapted to be secured at the end of a stick and when brought down on the pavement or ground to explode an encompassed toy cartridge or cap. Such devices, broadly considered, arefwell known.
AThe specific objects of this invention are,
first," to enable the eXploder to conveniently hold the cartridge or cap so that it will not be liable to drop out; second, to enable the charge ao'tohe4 enplodedV by bringing the exploder against surfaces more yielding than a stoneA pavement, forexample; third, to endow""the construction with suiicient strength so that the largest possible load cannot rupture it; fourth, to enable as vloud a report as possible torbe produced by the'explosion, and, fifth, to
enable the device to be produced very cheaply.
The invention may be conveniently summarized as consisting of the combinations ofA v parts which lIhave devised for'the above ends,l
as vhereinafterfully explained, and definitely 4o the upper memben 5o a recess a', while the lower member has a cor- Referring to the parts by letters, A represents the upper member of the exploder. In the upper end of this is a socket a, in which tightly seats'therednced lowerl end of theI stick or cane C, by which the exploder is carried.
'lhe lower .member of the exploder is designated B.l It, like the upper member, consists of a truncated cone.' The upper member has responding boss or projection D', adjusted to" seat in the rece'ssa. The cartridge isaat tablet and is compressed between-theflat'sur-l faces of this recess and'projection.
The member B is held in "place by al bail D, 5'54 bail passes and on the lupper side `of which' litfc is riveted, as indicated' at df The bail liesin' a groove b in the mernbcr"B;- Occupyin'gaf' central recess bz'in the member B isa spring-f E, whichbears at oneend against `the" base;
springV therefore is to tend toca-use 'the"two?V members A and B tocontaetlwith' eachother@ The cooperating recess and projection a!4 and1 of the recess, lthe other end againsttheinner 6\"5'-` ksurface of the bail. The operation" of'thisb have'theirwallsc'onical, so that whilethe'rel4 7`f "is plenty of play between th'einwhen theyar'e separatedv they come-comparatively snugly? together'at their nearest approach. l There# f cess a has a horizontal openingo'totheout#v ing the fiat cartridge isl'inserted, the member ,Btk being grasped bythe'l fingers aindjdrawn'f lf-'way against lthe force of the'springE-to allow" the insertion. After` they cartridge" has been' lside of the "member, and througbliisfopel 7 5t placed the springjE holds it snugly, p'reven't 8b ling itsk escape-though the orifice ai' be-'t'urnedWY downward. Thu-sth'e stick orcan'e can be"l` Aloaded and carried over the'sh'oulder; forex# I ample, without paying anyattention to fthe y position of the orifice as.'
This pointiswoffv importaneefas it allows'the cane-to be jcarried loaded for any desired timeandexpleded'lat I anyunexpected point, thereby increasingthe"v pleasure of operation. When thel cartridge" is in place, itis containedl in acomparativelyf 9.o*v
small chamber, so that its explosion producesa large amount of' noise. The baleDfoccuf pies thev groove d loosely enough sothat-thevv member B may adj ustitself to `l1tnfe7 th'eu'gr" cartridge 'throughout vthe su'rfacefcf 'thelatL" ter, though the cartridge maybe uneven-,- andthis large amount of' contact"andithecoin paratively large surface at the lower-"eiidof` the member 'B yallows the exploderto opertfeil roe.z
per surface of the-boss?)l in contact 4Witlrtlue 95 when it is brought against the ground or 'a Wooden floor, for example, the device not being limited to use on such a hard surface as a stone pavement.
The exploder is very strong, as the strain caused by the explosion is simply a tensile strain on the lbail D, which the latter is Well able to withstand.
The device may be very cheaply constructed, consisting in addition to the stick of but4 four parts and the only operation required to secure these parts together being the rivetingY bail.
Yin -g upset heads, and aspring tending to bring said. members together, substantially as described.
2. In a cartridgeexploder, in combination, an upper member having in its upper end na recess for the reception of a stick and in its lower end a recess opening downward and opening sidewise, a lower member having a projection adapted enter the bottom re- V Cess of the. upper member, and having in its 'occupying said grooves in the bottom air` outer face a downwardly-opening diametric groove extending across the betteln and up the sides of said member, a icl-shaped riveted at its ends to said upper member aux; i
sides of said lower member, and a sprin tending to bring said members together, substantially as described.
3. In a cartridge-exploder, an upper mernber A formed in conical shape and. having a recess in its upper end for the reception of a stick and a daring recess a in its lower end, which latter recess also has a lateral opening a3, there being a'pair of recesses a2 azen opposite sides of the member, combined with a coperating member B having on its upper surface a conical projection adapted to enter the recess a', said member B having a diametrical groove b, a bail D depending from the member A by having its ends projecting through'the member into the recesses a2 and there riveted, said bail occupying the groove b, and a spring occupying a central downwardly-opening recess in the member B and bearing against the inner surface of the bail, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof 'l hereunto aiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT L. SHORT.
