UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
-WILLIAM NORRIS, OF BLACKPOOL, AND HENRY SPURRIER, OF ST. ANNES- ON THE-SEA, ENGLAND.
STEAM-G EN ERATO R.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 708,066, dated September 2, 1902. Application filed February 25, 1902. Serial No.'95.552. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known, that we, WILLIAM NORRIS, residing at Blackpool, and HENRY SPURRIER,residing at St. Annes-on-the-Sea, in the county of Lancaster, England, subjects of the'King' generators and of rende1'ing them more suit able for use in connection with road-vehicles propelled by steam-motors.
In carrying out our invention we construct these generators with fire-box crown-plates having angles which project beyond the boilershell and afiord means whereby theboiler may be supported and so, also, that it forms the bottom of the steam and water space.
In place of the water-pocket, which is cast in the iron ring surrounding the upper part of the fire-space, we cast therein external recesses for the reception of mud-cock elbows.
'We will more fully describe our improvements with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical section, and
Fig. 2 a plan, of a boiler in which our improvements are embodied.
In the drawings, a indicates the fire-grate,
b a cast-iron ring surrounding the fire-space, and d a superheating pipe-coil embedded in the ring. This ring instead of being constructed as at present is made with a plural-' this is the more economical form; but it maybe triangular, pentagonal, hexagonal, or 00- tagonal. Its angles e project beyond the shell of the boiler and constitute means for its support on a suitable frame or bearers, such as the framework of a vehicle. It is shown to be made concave below and forms the whole of the bottom of the steam and water space 9. The outer shell 70 is riveted or secured by customary means to the fire-box crown-plate and to the boiler crown-plate Z, respectively. In the center of the steam and water space is the vertical tube on, through which fuel is supplied to the furnace. The crown-plate Land top plate Z are connected steam-tight with the tube, as indicated. The smoke-box is not shownby the drawings, but is of the usual construction, and the tube on passes through it. This tube is capped when the boiler is not being fired. The whole of the water-space is traversed by a plurality of vertical tubes in the customary manner and are connected with the crown-plate and top plate, respectively, by known means commonly employed; but in the drawings all buta few are omitted for the sake of clearness.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In steam generators of the class described, acrown-plate having parts extending beyond the extreme diameter of the firebox and'formirig a means of support for the boiler, in combination with means for suspending the fire-box therefrom, substantially as set forth.
2. In steam generators of the class described, a cast-iron ring surrounding the upper part of the fire-space and having recesses formed in the outer part of its upper edge for the reception of mud-cock elbows, substantially as set forth. H
8. In steam generators of the class described, the combination with a fire-box crownplate, of angular extensions integral with the plate, a cast-iron ring suspended from the crown-plate, recesses cast in'the upper outer part of, thering, and mud-cock elbowscontained within the said recesses, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names hereto in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM NORRIS. HENRY SIUBRIER.
