Description

v ring or annulus H, to which the plates are UNITED STATES i CHURCHILL HUNGERFORD, FPHILADELPI-IIA, PENNSYLVANIA.A
FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,333, dated August 19, 1902. Application filed May 9, 1902. Serial No. 106,545. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, CHURCHILL HUNGER- FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Filters, of which the following isla specication.
My invention consists in providing a filter, with a sand-valve which is adapted -to automatically adjustl itself to the yflow of Vwater therethrough.
It furtherconsists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure l represents a partial sectional view and partial elevation of a portion of a lter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of a valve employed, showing aportion broken away. Fig. 3 represents a bottom plan view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a tank or compartment which is provided with the nipple B and with the plate or partition C, which has suitable openings therethrough, said plate dividing the tank A into separate chambers.
D designates sand-valves, which are connected,by means of the threaded pipes E,with the partition C, whereby the said valves are held in position. The said valves l) consist each of a body comprising, respectively, top and bottom plates F and G, preferably springbrass, and between these plates is the side wall of said body, the same consisting of a suitably attached, in the present instance by the screws J. Between said plates and rings p at the place where the same are secured together are washers K, which hold the plates a slight distance away fromthe ring, forming spaces or ports L and M therebetween. In the plates are the cuts, slits, orother means of severance, as at N,.which extend from the periphery thereof toward the center in such a manner as to leaveportions of said plates movable, said portions producing wings or flaps P, which are adapted to be automatically raised and lowered, as will be further explained. f I Q designates the sand or filtering substance,
ports are substantially closed, eXcepting'ad-- jacent to the washer, it enters the valve through the lower ports and said spaces. s As the area of the inletthrough the valves isreduced because of the partially-closed .upper` ports, the water passes speedily throughthe open ports, and the tendency of the same to choke is reduced. When itis desired to 'wash the filter, waterwhich may be unfiltered is passed through the opening B upwardly and through the pipes E and the ports L and M. This lifts the iiaps and causes the sand to rise, and thus said iiaps spring back to their former position, opening the upper ports, and the water passes through the valve more easily and rapidly, it being seen in this manner that should any foreign substance have become lodged in the ports of the valve, thereby causing a stoppage, the pressure of the water will 'force the same throughvthe valve into the tank A, thus relieving the valve and rendering the latter self-clearing.
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of myinvention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shownand described. l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. 1. In a sand-valve for filters, 4a body having a top plate, a side wall, and a port between said wall and plate, said plate being movable in part as a iiap, whereby said port is adapted to be automatically reduced in area during the filtering process and ,which is automatic-l ally increased in area during the cleansing process.
2. In a sand-valve for lters, a body'formed of a plate, a side wall, and a port between said wall and plate, said plate being movable in part as a iiap which is adapted to be automatically. reduced in area during the filtering process, whereby the water is compelled to flow at a rapid rate through the port by reason of said decreased area, reducing the tendency of any foreign matter remaining there n and said port being adapted to be automatic- 3. A sand-valve for a filter consisting of a plate and a side wall with a port between said Wall and plate, said plate having a portion of the same severed forming a movable flap r 5 ally opened during the cleansing process by which is integral with said plate and adapted reason of the mobility of said plate of the Valve thereby increasing the area to such an extent that the Water passing therethrough is not materially retarded by friction, nor is it possible for any foreignsubstanees to be held in said port.
to regulate the area of said port.
