Description
U STATES PATENT @Ferca CHARLES WV. MARSH AND WILLIAM W. MARSH, OF SHABBONA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 70,730, dated November 12, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES W. MARSH and WILLIAM W. MARSH, .of Shabbona, in the count-y of De Kalb, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in the construction of the gear-frame, and the attachment thereto of a peculiar driving apparatus, for the several parts of a harvestingmachine; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specitication, in which- Figure l is a back view of the frame of a harvester, showing the arrangement of our invention as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same without belt. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the three iigures.
This invention consists in the peculiar construction of an adjustable gear-frame, and arrangement therewith of a single drive-belt revolved by pitman crank-wheel, for the two sections of a self-rake of a harvester.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention, We will proceed to describe it.
A represents an adjustable gear frame, placed within the side pieces a a of main frame, and attached thereto by bolts b and b through said pieces a a of main frame and the side pieces of frame A, a series of corresponding holes being made in said timbers for said bolts. Within this frame A is placed the drive-wheel B, attached by its axle at points l 1, Figs. 2 and 3. A crank-shaft, Whose flywheel C constitutes the main drive-pulley, is also attached to said frame A. To said ilywheel or drive-pulley O is attached a wristpin, c, for pitman I. D represents a tightening or adjustable pulley upon slide d, working in groove in plate f, and held by set-screw c, said plate f being bolted to cross-piece g at 2 2. This cross-piece g connects the long standard h with short standard i. E represents pulley to drum K, Fig. 2, around which K revolves an endless band of rakes, M, the course of which is shown by arrow l, Fig. 3, the shaft of said drum being boxed at each end in the ends of main braces F F. G represents the pulley to drum L, Fig. 3, around which L revolves the canvas platform N, the course of which is shown by arrow 2, Fig. 3. H represents the drive-belt; J j, the pieces forming the back sill. k is a cross-rail connecting back long standard h to the front long standard h.
The parts above described-having connected therewith a sickle driven around the grain-wheel by lever attached to pitman I at point 3, with revolving apron in position to move, as shown by arrow 2,5and with endless band of rakes in position to move, as shown by arrow l, Figs. 2 and 3; also with concave placed at end of band of rakes over drivewheel, and platform and tables for binders, said platform being attached to sills of main frame at 4 4, and tables to short posts at 5 5, Fig. 2, with reel, divider, seat, pole, and other lesser parts, all of which are not shown, because common and public-constitute what is commonly called the Marsh Harvester, Self- Raker, and lland-Binder7 with our improvement applied thereto.
As there has been a difficulty, from the peculiar construction of this machine, and from the manner of the adaptation of its self-rake, in attaching the gearing by pitman direct to sickle, and as it is absolutely necessary that the motive power to its peculiar self -rake should not be applied in front, we have added, as aforesaid, this improvement thereto, of which the operation is as follows:
As the harvester is drawn along, the motion is given, through the gear attached to drive-wheel and crank-shaft, to the drive-pulley G, which, being driven as aforesaid, and being placed behind and outside the drive wheel, revolves in the direction indicated by arrow 3, and the drive-belt, pursuing the same course, communicates to pulley G of drum L the necessary movement for the revolving platform, and to pulley E of drum K the necessary movementfor the elevating band of rakes. To drive-pulley C is attached the wrist-pin c, which gives motion to pitman I, and by lever around grainv'heel drives the sickle. Thus it will be seen that the single fly-Wheel or drive-pulley C communicates the required motion, through the drive-belt H, to the two divisions of the self-raking device Without any intermediate gear, and to the pitman at the same time.
When it becomes necessary to raise or lower the machine, which is done by slipping the adjustable frame, with drive-wheel attached, up or down within the pieces a a of the main frame, changing the bolts b and Z1', respectively, to corresponding holes in side pieces of A, and pieces a, a of main frame up or down, as may be required either to raise or lower, it follows that the crank-shaft with. pulley C. being attached to frame A, will rise or fall with it, and pulleys C and E Will approach or recede from each other, and the drive-belt H will Vbe too long or too short, to obviate which, besides giving tension to the belts, we construct and use the tightening or adjustable pulley D upon slide d, Working in groove in platef. Thus, when we raise the adjustable frame A, and the pulleys O and E approach each other, and the belt becomes slack, we slide the tightening or adjustable pulley l) up in the groove to such height as will take up the slack in the belt, holding in required position by set-screw e, a series of holes being made for said set-screw in slide d. When lowering the frame A, the tightening or adjustable pulley D is let down in the saine manner. Thus it will be seen the improvement above justable gear-frame, when the saine is raised or lowered.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The arrangement of the several pulleys G, E, and G with tightening or adjustable pulley D, so that drive-belt H-may give inotion to both drums, K and L, of baud of rakes M and revolving platform N, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. le claim the adjustable pulley D on slide d, working in groove in plate j, as described.
3. 7e claim the adjustable frame A, when used in connection with the tightening or adjustable pulley D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
