Be it known that I, GEORGE MERRIHUE FENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Machine for Bending'Scythe-Snaths, of which the following'is a specification.
This invention relates generally to woodbending apparatus, and particularly to a machine for bending scythe-snaths.
The objects of the invention are, in al eady, simple, practicahand thorougly-feasiblemanner, to prevent stretching of the fibers of the snath-blank on the outside of the bends and to eifect compression of the fibers on the inside thereof, to obviate splintering or breaking of the blank, to effect large saving both in time and labor in the production of the finished product, thereby greatly reducing its cost of manufacture, to effect perfect uniformity of theoutput, and generallyto simplify and improve the existing modes of manufacturin g scythe-Sn aths.
With these and other objects in view, asv
will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists,'generally stated, in a machine of the character specified embodying in its construction a stationary head or die, the operative face of which contains all of the horizontal bends of of the said bends, a vertically-recipricatory former, the operative face of which contains all of the vertical bends of the snath, and a removable frame or form, the bottom of which contains all of the vertical bends and the sides all of the horizontalbends of the snath. In conjunction with the parts named there is provided a flexible jacket comprising two members disposed, respectively, in front and in rear of the blank and movable therewith as the horizontal bends are being imparted thereto and operating to prevent splintering or breaking of the blank, in addition to which jacket there is provided positively-operating mechanis m' to exert end pressure on the blank, thereby to prevent tearing or breaking of the fibers on the outside of the bends as the blank is being formed.
The invention consists, further, in the novel manner of timing the operations of the two movable formers, whereby the belly or horizontal bend of the-blank shall-be entirely completed and the blank moved over the form that is to receiveit before the formerthat is to impart the vertical bends shall start to operate. j v
, With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists inthe novel construction and combination of parts of a machine for bending scythe-snaths, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, and in which like nu morals of reference indicate corresponding parts, there is illustrated one form of embodiment of the invention'capable of carryingjthe same into practical operation, it beingunderstood that the elements thereinexhibited may be'varied or changed as to shape,-prowithout departingt'rom the spirit'thereofl'and i n these drawings- Figure l is a view in perspective of acom= plete machine capable of carrying the-procedure hereinafter'described into effect. Connecting with the rear portion of the plunger and working in a longitudinal slot therein is one arm 6 of a toggle-lever, fulcrumedat 6 to the plunger, the other arm 7 of the lever being fulcru med at 8 to a fixed part of the frame in rear of the plunger. The upper terminals of the arms (3 and 7 have connected with them, through the medium of a fulcrum-pin 8, one end of a rod or bar 9, the other end of which is connected to a wrist-pin 10, connecting two gearwheels 11, carried by a shaft 12, mounted in suitable bearings in the frame. These gearwheels mesh with two pinions 13, carried by a shaft 14, one end of which bears a gearwheel 15 in mesh with the pinion 16, carried by one end of a shaft 17, the other end of which carries a band-pulley 18, connected by a belt with any suitable source of power. While not herein shown, it being thought unnecessary so to do, it is to be understood that suitable clutch mechanism may be associated with the shaft 17, whereby the pulley may be made fast or loose with relation to the shaft, as may be desired.
It will be seen that upon motion being imparted to the pinion 16 the gear-wheels 11- will be driven, thereby drawing down the arm 9 and moving'the arms 6 and 7 toward a horizontal plane, causing the plunger to move forward, the limit of its forward movement being reached when the arms 6 and 7 shall have assumed a horizontal plane, the plungerin this movement imparting the horizontal or belly bend to the scythe-snath by coaction with a fixed former or head 19, disposed at the rear of the machine and, as before stated, containing all of the horizontal bends of the snath.
In the operation of imparting the horizontal bend to the blank it is essential that the blank be shielded against any tendency to splintering or breaking and at the same time that end pressure be progressively applied to the butt and tap of the blank in order to effect compression thereof, and thereby obviate any tendency of the fibers on the outer side of the bend from being unduly stretched or from breaking. The means foreffecting these results comprise a flexible jacket consisting of two strips or bands of metal 20 and 21. The band 20 is carried by the head 19 and is held associated therewith by providing each of its ends with a rod or bar 22, which pass through abutments 23, disposed near each end of the head, and carry at their extremities adjusting-nuts 24, between which and the outer sides of the abutments are disposed coiled springs 25, by which the tension of the band may be regulated as desired, and to facilitate yielding of the band rollers 26 may be employed near its terminals, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The band 21 is associated with the terminals 27 and 28 of two levers 29 and 30, pivotally connected with the ends of the head 19 through the medium of bolts 30, one of which is clearly shown in Fig. 9, the
terminals of the heads being slotted at 30 for the reception of the levers. The band 21, which at its terminals is constructed in the same manner as the band 20, carries at that end which projects through the terminal 27 a nut 31, between which and the outer face of the said terminal is interposed a spring 32, while that end that projects through the ter minal 28 has associated with it a slide-bearing 33, bearing at one end against a coiled spring 34, housed in the terminal, which is recessed for this purpose, the other terminal of the spring bearing against the wall of the recess. The outerend of the terminal of the bend 21, which projects through the bearing 33, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, carries an ad justing-nut 35, between which and the said bearing is interposed a coiled spring 36, that operates to keep the band under requisite tension. The provision of the sliding bearing 33 is essential in order that the band may be forced up close against the terminal of the butt, thereby to impart the short horizontal bend thereto, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, it being obvious that without the provision of the bearing 33 this could not be effected in a thoroughly practical manner without danger of kinking or breaking the band. The levers 29 and 30, which in effect constitute toggles, are provided for the purpose of giving progressive end pressure to the blank as the horizontal bends are being imparted thereto, and thus in a positive manner to prevent stretching of the fibers of the wood on the outside of the bends. To impart the necessary outward and inward movements to the said levers in order first to move the terminals 27 and 28 of the levers 29 and 30 into engagement with the ends of the snath-blank, thus to compress the same, and then to move the said terminals laterally for engagement with a fresh blank there is provided for the first movement an adjustable bar 37, carrying at its inner end a head 38, having its outer face concaved, as at 39, to conform to the crest of the belly bend, and thus distribute the strain thereon to reduce danger of marring at that point, the rear portion of the head being curved or rounded and being adapted when the plunger is moved to the limit of its forward movement to rest in a recess formed in the front face of the head. The rod 37 is made adjustable or extensible to enable it to meet the requirements arising in bending snaths wherein the curves of the belly bend will vary, and to effect this the rod is constructed of two sections 41 and 42, and these two sections are superposed and have their opposed faces serrated, as at 43, the member 42 being provided with a slot 44,
through which passes a bolt 45, carried by the member 41, a nut 46 on the bolt serving to hold the two members at the desired adjustmeut.
To adapt the levers 29 and 30 for cooperation with snath-blanks of different lengths and also to effect their proper adjustment with relation tothe oth'erpar'ts of the apparatus, the terminals thereof are adapted for movement to and from the terminals of the blank, andthis is "effected by providing the "terminals of the head, through which the bolts 30 pass, with slots 46, the upper and lower sides of the said head-terminals on each sideof theslots being serrated and engaged by serrated plates 46", through which the bolts 3O pass. It will be seen that by loosening the nuts of the boltsthe terminals L of the levers may beadjusted with relation to the ends of the blank and may be held permanently in such adjustment by clamping the plates 46 in position.

Now as the plunger moves forward. the blank by contact with the band moves the latter against the head-38 and forces the rod-37 outward and the terminals 27 and 28-of the levers 29' and'30 inward, effecting thereby end compression of the snath-blank,-and when the'plunger has reached the limit of its for- I ward movement and has commenced to re- I turn the end 51. of the bar 49 by coaction with'the forward wall-of the slot-50 of the 4 plunger moves the levers 29 and toward the front of the machine,-thereby projecting the terminals 27 and 28 outward. As will be noted byreference to Figs. 2 and 3, the slot is considerably longer than the diameter of the terminal 51 of the bar 49, thereby permitting the immediate return of the jacket to'horizontal position *toreceive the fresh blank. The quick return of the jacket may be etfectedby a spring or counterweight at tached at the point where the levers'29 and 30 connect, which will force the levers inward and-their terminals outward.
The means for imparting the vertical bonds to the snath-blank comprisesa former 52, the under-face of which contains all of thevertical bends of the snath blank. By the time the levers 6 and 7 of the toggle have assumed an approximately horizontal position all of the horizontal bends will have been imparted to the blank, and before the plunger 5 begins to recede the Wrist pin 12 will engage with the nose 67 of the lever 65, and thereby actuate the toggles 61 to force the former 52 downward, pushing theblank from between the jacket members and into the form 73, imparting to the blank As soon as the former 52 resumes its normal position the form 73 is lifted out of the machine with the bent snath in it, and another form is then sub stituted and the operation continued as before.
It is further to be understood that while this machine is described as adapted for bending scythe-snaths it can be readily adapted for bending any irregular form by providing plungers and heads having their opposed faces of the contour desired, and as this ,will be readily understood detailed illustration thereof is deemed unnecessary.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that the operation of this machine is continuous and very rapid, that the output will be of uniform character, and that all danger of breaking or splintering a blank is positively eliminated.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A machine for bending scythe-snaths, comprisinga flexible jacket for inclosing opposite sides of the blank, means for imparting the horizontal bends to the blank, means for imparting progressive end pressure to the blank while the said bends are being formed, and means for imparting the vertical bends to the blank.
2. A machine for bending scythe-snaths, comprising a flexible jacket for inclosing opposite sides of the blank, means coacting therewith to impart the horizontal bends to the blank, mechanism operated by the said meansfor imparting end pressure to the blank while the said bends are being formed, and means for imparting vertical bends to the blank.
3. In a machine forbendingscythe-snaths, the combination of means for imparting the horizontal bends to the blank, a flexible jacket for inclosing'opposite sides of the blank,
means coacting with the jacket to impart end pressure to the blank, and means for forcing the blank from the jacket and for imparting the vertical bends thereto.
4. In a machine for bending scythe-snaths, the combination of means for imparting the horizontal bends to a snath-blank, an adjustable flexible jacket for inclosing the opposite sides of the blank, mechanism actuated by the said means for imparting progressive end pressure to the blank, and means for forcing the blank from the jacket and for imparting the vertical bends thereto.
5. A machine for bending scythe-snaths, comprising means for imparting the horizontal bends to the snath-blank, a jacket for inclosing the opposite sides of the blank and to be flexed by the said means, and vertically movable means for forcing the blank from the jacket and for imparting the vertical bends thereto.
6. A machine for bending scythe-snaths, comprising an adjustable flexible jacket for inclosing opposite sides of the blank, means coacting with the jacket to impart horizontal bends to the blank, and mechanism operated by the said means for imparting end pressure to the blank while the said bends are being formed.
7. A machine for bending scythe-snaths comprising a flexible jacket for receiving the blank, a plunger for imparting the horizontal bends to the blank, means for imparting progressive end pressure to the blank while the said bends are being formed, and means for imparting the vertical bends tothe blank.
8. A machine for bending scythe-snaths comprising a flexible jacket for receiving a blank, a plunger coacting therewith to impart the horizontal bonds to the blank, meansoperated by the plunger for imparting end pressure to the blank while the said bends are being formed, and means for imparting the vertical bonds to the blank.
9. A machine for bending scythe-snaths comprising a flexible jacket for inclosing opposite sides of the blank, a plunger coacting therewith to impart the horizontal bends to the blank, and means operated by the plunger for imparting end pressure to the blank while the said bends are being formed.
10. In a machine for bending scythe-snaths, the combination of a movable plunger for imparting the horizontal bends to asnath-blank, a flexible jacket to receive the blank, means coacting with the jacket to impart end pressure to the blank, and means for forcing the blank from the jacket and for imparting the vertical bends thereto.
11. Inamachineforbendingscythe-snaths, the combination of a plunger for imparting the horizontal bends to a snath-blank, an adjustable flexible jacket to receive the blank, means actuated by the plunger for imparting progressive end pressure to the blank, and means for forcing the blank from the jacket and for imparting the vertical bends thereto.
12. A machine for bending scythe-snaths comprising a plunger for imparting the horizontal bends to a snath-blank, a jacket to receive the blank and to be flexed by the plunger, and a vertically-movable plunger for forcing the blank from the jacket andfor imparting the vertical bends thereto.

26. In a machine for bending scythe-snaths, the combination of a stationary head and a movable plunger each having its operative face containing all of the horizontal bends of a scythe-snath, of a vertical plunger having its under face containing all of the vertical bends of a snath. 4

Inamachinefor bending scythe-snaths, the combination of a stationary die and a horizon tally-reciprocatory plunger, each havingits operative face provided with'all of the horizontal bends of a scythe-snath, of a vertically-reciprocatory plunger having its under face provided with all of the vertical bends of the snath, and a removable form or frame disposed below the latter plunger, the bottom of the form having all of the vertical bends and its sides all of the horizontal bends of a snath.
28. In a machine for bending scythe-snaths, the combination with the belly-bend-forming means, of end-pressnre-exerting mechanism actuated by the said means, and a flexible jacket associated with the said mechanism for inclosing opposite sides of a snath-blank.
29. In a machine for bendingscythe-snaths, the combination with the belly-bend-forming means, of end-pressureexertingmechanism actuated by the said means, and a two-membered flexible blank-receiving jacket associated with the said mechanism, one terminal of one of the members of the jacket having a slide-bearing associated therewith.
30. In a machine for bendingscythe-snaths, bellybend forming means having toggle mechanism associated therewith, verticalbend-forming means having toggle mechanism associated therewith, positively-driven master-wheels operatively connected with the toggle mechanism of the belly-bend-forming means, said wheels being connected by a wrist'pin, a bar having one end connected with the toggle mechanism of the verticalbend-forming means,and its opposite end provided with a nose disposed in the path of movement of the wrist-pin, means for supporting the latter end of the bar in operative position with relation to the wrist-pin, and a lever fulcrumed to the frame of the machine and having one terminal operatively connected with the bar and its other terminal disposed in the path of movement of the bellybend-forming means.
31. In a machine for bending scythe-snaths, belly-bend forming means having toggle mechanism associated therewith, verticalbend-forming means having toggle mechanism associated therewith, positively-driven master-wheels operatively connected with the first-named toggle mechanism,said wheels being connected by a wrist-pin, springs coacting with the second-named toggle mechanism and operating normally to hold the vertical-bend-forming means normally raised, a bar having one end connected with the toggle mechanismrof the vertical-bend-forming means and its opposite end provided with a nose disposed in the path of movement of the wrist-pin, means for supporting the latter end of the bar in operative position with relation to the wrist-pin, and a lever fulcrumed on the frame of the machine and having one terminal operatively connected with the bar and its other terminal disposed in the .path of movement of the belly-bend-forming means.
