Description

I @auch 'tetra strnt @ffice WILLIAM o. nioKoK; or HARRISBURG; BENNSYLVANIA.
' Leners Patent No. 70,715, darai Mamba-12, 1867.
' IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-RULING MAGHIES *eng- TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. IIICKOK, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin, and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Paper-Ruling Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichv Figure 1 is a-vertical transverse section, and A I I 'Figure 2 a plane or Orthographie view of the said improvement applied to a ruling machine.
Like letters of reference indicating thesame parts when in both figures-- In the operation of the rulingmachiue heretofore used, the paper' therein Ais liable to creep" /or vary from the proper line of progression toward the. pens, especially when the said paper-has not a perfectly Hat or even surface, and consequently a great deal of watchfulness and careful readjustments of the sheets of paper are required to prevent'irregularties in the ruling; and the object of my improvement is to eifectuall'y provide against the occurrence of these. objections. l
My invention consists, substantially as hereinafter described, in the application of a stationarytable or solid bearing surface, in the usual open space which is between the pen-cylinder and the feed-rolls.
Referring to the drawings, A B are the usual frame of the machine; C, the pen-cylinder, D D', the feed-rolls; D, one of the web-supporting rolls; E, the paper-carrying web; F F, the paper-holding cords; G, the stationary table or solid bearing surface, and H a sheet of paper between F and G. The table G consistsl of a broad, stationary, unyielding support for that portion of the endless iveb E which moves .along between the feedrolls Dl D' and the pen-cylinder C. Its length corresponds with'the length of the cylinder' C; its upper surface is slightly curved transversely, its sides are parallel-to each other1 and thc'width of its upper surface-such as causes it to nearly fill the usual space which is left between the upper sides of the small roll D and the pencylinder C, without touching either, when the said 'table G is xed between them in such a position that its upper surface and the upper surfaces of the roll D and the pen-cylinder C will together afford a curved, rigid support for the'web E and the cords F, as the latter move over them, substantially as represented in the drawings. The table Gis rigidly secured 'in the described position by means of supporting-bars g g', which rest in suit. able bearings xed on the inner sides of the two side rails a" b of' the frame A B, (see fig. 2.)
In the operation of the machine 'thus improved, 'the web E and the .cords F which at anytime maybe moving across the table G, will necessarily be supported by the table a steady or unyielding1 condition, and consequently the sheetsof paper H which may have been fed/between them by the rolls D D D will be carried along to and under the usual pens, thereby preciselyin the same relative positions inwhich they leave the two feed-rolls D D', thus avoiding the necessity of thewatchfulness, delay, and readjustments heretofore required to detect and remedy the creeping of the paper. v
The device is inexpensive of construction, can 'be easily applied to old machines, and is entirely e`ective for the purpose intended. y
Having thus fully described my improvement in the ruling rmachine, what I clainr as new,l and of my invention, and desire to secure by vLetters Patent, is l i The application thereto of a stationary table, G, so that it will operate in combination with the web E, cords F, and feed-rolls D D', substantially in the manner described and setvforth for the purpose specified.
W. O. HICKOK.
