UNITED STATES PATENT JEREMIAH E. MATHEWSON, OF BROAD HEATH, NEAR MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO BENJAMIN C. TILGHMAN, JR., AND RICHARD TILGHMAN, TRADING -AS THEFIRM OF B. C. 85 R. A. TILGHMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
APPARATUS FORIYCLEANING AIR FROM SAND-TBLAST APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters iatentNo. 707,134, dated August 19,1902. Application filed September 20, 1901. Serial No. 75,743. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
SON, a subject of the King of Great Britain and'Ireland, residing in Broad Heath, near Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, Eng- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my apparatus, and Fig. 2 afront elevation of the same apparatus. i
A diagrammatically indicates a sand blast B is the dust-pipe leading from the said chamber and communicating directly with a fancasing C, which in turn communicates with a delivery-pipe D, leading into the top of a water-tank, (indicated'at F.) This tank is shown as provided with a cleaning-door G at bottom, through which mud can be removed, and with an air-outlet pipe, (indicated at M.) It is also provided with a water-outlet pipe H, the end h of which enters the tank at what is intended to be its water-level, (indicated at f.) The water-pipe H is shown provided with a valve I, by which it can be closed or regula ted,and leads into a pump, (indicated at J said pump havinga delivery-pipe K, which passes, as shown, through the pipe B and is provided at its upper end with a spray-nozzle L, directed'to deliver water against the blades of the fan E, contained in the casing C. As shown and as-conveniently constructed, the pipeK passes through the wall of the pipe B; but it is immaterial in what manner or just where the nozzle L is introduced, so
. .long as it throws the water against the blades Be it known that I, JEREMIAH E. MATHEW of the fan. V
In operation the fan E being set in motion the air is drawn from the sand-blast chamber A through-the pipe B into the fan-casing C,
passing through-the fan casing, through the pipe D, and down against the water in the tank F. At the same time the pump J sucks the water from the tank F, drawing it through dust-laden air passing through the fan, the
result of which is that the air is thoroughly cleaned by the water and all mud precipi= tated through the pipe B into the water in the tankF, clean air being-allowed to escape through the pipe M. The water-level in the tank F is maintained constant by the action of pump J ,which draws off the water as fast as it rises above the determined level 1".
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A 1. The combination with'a sand-blast plant and an exhaust-conduit pipe leading-from said plant and adapted to draw dust-ladened air. from said locality, of an exhaust-fan coupled to said conduitand a nozzle arranged to throw a jet or jets of. water upon the rotating blades of the fan, whereby said water is finely divided and thoroughly mixed with the dust-ladened air.
2. The combination with a sand-blast plant and an exhaust-conduit pipe leading from said plant and adapted to draw dust-ladened air from said locality, of an exhanst-fan'coupled to said conduit, a nozzle arranged to throw a jet or jets of water upon the rotating blades of the fan, wherebysaid wateris finely divided and thoroughly mixed with the dust'-' and an exhaust-conduit pipe leading from maintaining Water at approximately the same said plant and adapted to draw dust-ladened level, and a delivery-pipe leading from the IO air from said locality, of an exhaust-fan coufan to a point in the tank above the waterpled to said conduit, a nozzle arranged to level.
