A cap 18 is screwed or otherwise secured in the outer side of the chamber 4 to close thelatter, and the said cap hasa screw-threaded bore the axis of which coincides with that of the gasplug-9, and in the said bore of the cap is a screw 19, having a tapered inner end which fits in a corresponding countersink 20 in the portion 12 of the gas-plug 9, the said screw serving to adjust the gas-plug to fit the same closely in the bore 3 and maintaining the same in its adjusted position. A set-screw 21v is in the outer portion of the bore of the cap and bears against the outer end of the screw 19. Said screw 21 serves to secure or lock the screw 19 against displacement, and hence the gas-plug is prevented from working loosein the bore 3. The rounded sides of the fork-arms of oscillating arm 13 bear against the inner side of the piston 8, the latter being shown as provided on its outer side with a packing-washer 22, which may be made of leather or any other suitable material and is here shown as secured on the piston by a disk 23, which is clamped on the outer side of the packing-washer by screws 24, that engage threaded openingsin the piston. Within the scope of my invention, however, the piston may be of any suitable construction, and I do not limit myself in this particular. A spring 25 acts on the gas plug to turn the same in one direction and through the arm 13 move the piston outwardly in the water-passage 3. The spring 25 normally maintains the gas-plug in such position that the opening 10 thereofis almost entirely covered by the walls of the casing 1, the angle a: of said opening remaining uncovered, so that onlya suflicient pressure of gas is maintained at the burner to maintain a very small flame.
A primary water-regulator is disposed in the water-passage 3 near the intake end thereof on the outer side of the piston. The said primary water regulator comprises a diaphragm 26, which is fixed against movement in the water-passage and is provided with transverse water-openings 27 and a disk 28, which is revoluble on the inner side of the diaphragm and is provided with openings 29, adapted when the disk is appropriately adv justed to uncover the openings 27 to any desired extent, and hence regulate the maximum pressure'of water in the water-passage,
3. The said disk 28 is provided with a concentric slot 30. A set-screw 31 in said slot and which engages a threaded opening in the diaphragm 26 serves to secure the disk 28 at any desired position to predetermine the maximum pressure of water in the water-passage and on the piston 8. The latter has a central opening 32. A plug 33 is secured to and projects from the inner side of the primary water-pressure regulator and extends through the opening 32. That portion of the said plug which is near the primary waterpressure regulator is cylindrical in form and adapted to fit in and close the opening 32, which is of corresponding form, when the pis ton 8 is at the outer limit of its stroke. (Shown in Fig. 3.) The inner portion of the said plug 38 is preferably of triangular form in crosssection, being chamfered to form its triangu lar sides, and the said'chamfers form passages 81, which extend axially on the said plug and are practically coextensive in length therewith. The chamfered or cut-away sides of the plug taper toward the inner end of the plug, and hence the passages 3t progressively enlarge in one direction. When the piston is at the outer end of its stroke, as in Fig. 3, the passages 34 are almost entirely closed thereby and but a small quantity of water can pass through them; but said passages are never entirely closed, and hence the piston may be moved on its outstroke through the Water by the spring, which turns the gas-plug in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3 to its normal closed position. On the instroke of the piston, which ensues on the opening of the cock (not shown) in the connection between the valve and the heater, the volume of water that passes through the water-passage of the valve to the heater is progressively increased as the piston moves on its instroke by reason of the progressivelyincreased capacity of the passages 34: in that direction. The plug also serves as a guide for the piston, as will be understood.
It will be understood that owing to the shape of the opening 10 in the gas-plug the volume of gas supplied to the burnerwill be increased to correspond to the increased supply of water to and its passage through the heater, so that the water will be heated to'the required temperature irrespective of the quantity drawn. When the Water is cut off, the spring 25 turns the plug 9 in the reverse direction, and hence moves the piston 8 to its initial position, (shown in Fig. 3,) thereby decreasing the quantity of gas supplied to the burner to the minimum.
It will be understood that the gas-plug may be so adjusted as to entirely out olf the supply of gas to the burner when the piston is at the limit of its instroke, in which event a continuously-burning pilot-light is provided to ignite the gas at the burner when turned on by the coaction ot the piston and plunger. Within the scope of my invention, however, any means may be employed to ignite the gas at the burner, and I do not limit myself in this particular.
I will now describe my improved means for regulating the tension of the spring 25.
On that portion of the plug 9 which is within chamber 5 and which is preferably cylindrical in form is revolubly fitted a sleeve 36, which is provided at its outer end with a series of radial notches 37 and which is of polygonal form exteriorly. Near the outer end of said plug is an opening 38, which is adapted to register with the said openings in the sleeve. The inner end of the spring 25 is bent angularly around the said sleeve to bear against the angular faces thereof, and the outer end of said spring is secured to one side of the chamber 5, as by a screw 39. The sleeve may be turned on the plug to set the spring at any desired tension, and when the sleeve has been thus adjusted a key 40, which is here shown as a split key, is inserted in the registering openings in the plug and sleeve to secure the latter and the spring when adjusted. A cap 41, which may be either of the form here shown or of any other suitable form, is secured on the casing 1 to close the outer side of the chamber 5. As here shown, said cap has a flange which incloses the circular wall of said chamber and is provided with a bayonet-slot 42. A stud or screw 43, which projects from the casing 1, enters said slot and locks the said cap in place.

The combination of a gas-valve, a waterpassage, a piston movable by the pressure of water against the same and having an opening to establish communication between the parts of the water-passage on opposite sides of the piston, a connection between the gas-valve and the piston whereby they are movable simultaneously, and means coacting with the piston to progressively increase the flow of water through the opening therein as the piston moves in one direction, and to maintain pressure in the water-passage on the inner side of the piston when the latter is at the limit of its outstroke, substantially as described.
2. In a fluid-pressure-regulated valve of the class described, the combination of a casing or body having-a gas-passage and a waterpassage, a bore intersecting the gas-passage and communicating with the water-passage,a plug in said bore, said plug having an opening to permit a flow of gas through the gas passage, and provided with an oscillating arm extending into the waterpassage, a spring to turn the gas-plug in one direction, and a piston in the water-passage, said piston forming a valve to permit the flow of water through the water-passage, being movable in one direction by the pressure of the water on one side thereof, and coacting with the arm to turn the gas-plug against the tension of the spring, substantially as described.
3. In a fluid-pressure-regulated valve of the class described, the combination of a gasvalve, a water-passage, a piston, movable by the pressure of water against the same and having an opening to establish communication between the parts of the water-passage on opposite sides of the piston, a connection between the piston and the gas-valve, whereby the piston and gas-valve are movable simultaneously, and a fixed plug in the opening in the piston, said plug having a waterchannel to maintain water-pressure in the water-passage on both sides of the piston, substantially as described.
4. In a fluid-pressure-regulated valve of the class described, the combination of a gasvalve, a water-passage, aprimary water-pressure regulator in said passage, a fixed plug carried by said primary water-pressure regulator, said plug having a channel of reduced capacity to establish communication between the parts of the water-passage on opposite sides of the primary water-pressure regulator, a piston movable by the pressure of water against the same and operating in the waterpassage, said piston having an opening in which the plug extends, the latter partially closing said opening, and a connection between the piston and the gas-valve whereby the same are simultaneously operated, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a valve-case having a gaspassage, a water-passage, a chamber communicating with the latter, and a bore communicating with said chamber and the gas-passage, a gas-plug revoluble in said bore, said gas-plug extending across the gaspassage and having an opening for the purpose set forth, a piston in the water-passage, a connection between the same and the plug, a cap to close the outer side of the chamber and a bearing carried by said cap and engaging said plug to fit the latter in the bore, substantially as described.
6. In a fluid-pressure-regulated valve of the class described, the combination of a revoluble gas-plug having an arm, a spring to turn the plug in one direction, means to vary the tension of said spring, a piston movable by fluid-pressure in one direction and coacting with the arm to turn the plug against the tension of the spring and means to vary and predetermine the maximum pressure of fluid on said piston, substantially as described.
7. In afluid-pressure-regulated valve of the class described, the combination ofa gas-valve having an element to cause a progressivelyincreased flow of gas when moved in one direction, a spring to move said element in the reverse direction, a water-passage, a guideplug therein, said plug'having exterior waterchannels of progressively-increased capacity in one direction, a piston, movable in the water-passage in one direction by the pressure of water, and having a bore in which the guide-plug is disposed, and a connection between the piston and the gas-valve, whereby the same are simultaneously operated, substantially as described.
8. In a fluid-pressure-regulated valve of the class described, the combination of a revoluble gas-plug, a coiled spring to turn said plug in one direction, the outer end of said spring being secured to a fixed point, a sleeve revoluble on said plug and to which the inner end of said spring is attached, means to lock said sleeve to said plug at any desired tension of said spring, and a fluid-pressure-actuated element connected to the plug to turn the latter in one direction against the tension of said spring, substantially as described.
9. A valve-case having a passage, in combination with a revoluble plug intersecting said passage, said plug having a transverse opening coincident with said passage and of progressively-diminishing width in the direction in which the plug is turned to cover said opening and cutoff the passage, substantially as described.
10. The combination of a valve-case having a gas-passage, a Water-passage, a chamber communicating with the latter, and a bore communicating with said chamber and the gas-passage, a gas-plug fitted and revoluble in said bore, said gas-plug extending across the gas-passage and having an opening for the purpose set forth, a piston in the Waterpassage, a connection between the same and the plug, and a removable closure in the outer side of said chamber, substantially as described.
