Description

No. 704 822. Patented July :5, 1902. m. B. GOOING.
COTTON CHOPPER AND GLO!) GRUSBER.
(Application filed Oct. 3, 1901,)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC MARTIN BIRD GOOING, OF VIOKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI.
COTTON-CHOPPER AND CLOD-ORUSHER.
SPECIFIOATIQN forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 704,822, dated July 15, 1902.
Application filed October 3, 1901. Serial No. '77 ,421. (N0 model-J useful Improvements in Cotton-Choppers and Clod-Orushers, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which-a Figure 1 is a top plan view of a machine of the character described embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the crushing attachments, parts being removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the truss. Fig. 4is a side elevation of a cultivator-tooth to be attached to the machine.
1 and 2 represent hounds having forwardlyprojecting ends 3 and 1, between which the tongue 5 of the machine is pivoted. These hounds are of the shape shown.
6 represents clamping-plates by means of which the cultivator-teeth 7 (shown in Fig. 4) are secured to the hounds, bolts 8 passing through a suitable head on the teeth 7 and said clips 6. v
9 is an arched bar, upon which is secured a casting 10, provided with a central opening 11 and the set-screw 12, adapted to project within said opening, by means of which said bar is secured upon the rear end of the hounds, as shown in Fig. 1, the lower ends 13 of said bar being provided with journal-bearings.
14 is the axle of the cotton-chopper and clod-crusher, which is journaled within the hearing 13 of the bar 9.
The cotton-chopper or clod-crnsher comprises the hub-plate 15, having central annular lug 16.
17 represents pins secured to the inner face of the hub-plate 15 a short distance from-the periphery of the central annular lug 16. It will be observed that the hubplate 15 is slightly dished in order that the periphery may be substantially in line with the face of the central annular lug 16. v
18 represents spring-spokes, the lower ends of which are bent at right angles, as at 19,while the inner ends of the spokes are bent around and secured to the pins 17, from which it will be seen that the right-angle portion of the spring-spoke has a bearing upon the periphery of the central annular lug 16 of some extent, which by reason of the peculiar construction will add considerably to the strength and resiliency of the spoke.
20 is an outer member of the hub, secured to the inner plate of the hub by means of suitable bolts 21, which pass through the boltopenings 22 in bbth members.
23 represents fiat steel knives, the ends of which are bolted to the outer straight portions 2 10f the spring-spokes, which form combined cotton -choppers and cl'od-crnshers. The spring-spokes above referred to are detachably secured to the hub member, thereby enabling me to use more or less knives when passing the chopper from cotton-drills for thinning orblocking.
In operation it will of course be understood that the spring-spokes are more or less compressed when immediately under weight of the machine; butas soon as the knife has passed from n nder the weight of the machine the spokes carrying that particular knife spring outward, thereby dislodging any accumulation that has formed or adhered to the knife, from which it will be seen that the knives are automatically cleaned when in operation. Further-,the resiliency of the spokes and knives adapt them to act as clod-crushers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a hub-plate, a central annular lug integral with said plate, pins secured to the plate a short distance from the periphery of said lug, of spring-spokes bent at right angles at their lower ends, a loop formed in the extreme lower end of said spokes, whereby the spokes are secured to said pins.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a hub-plate, a'central annular lug integral with said plate, pins secured to said plate a short distance from the periphery of the central annular lug, springspokes bent at right angles near their lower ends and secured at their extreme lower end to said pins, whereby the right-angled portion rests upon the periphery of the central annulam lug, a second hub-plate bolted to the first- 5 named hub plate, and flat resilient steel The foregoing specification signed this 11th day of September, 1901.
MARTIN BIRD GOOING.
