WILLIAM THOMAS SEDDON, OFMINERSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
BATTERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,125, dated July 8, 1902.
Application tiled .Iuly 20, 19,01. Serial No. 69,113. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it ntrty concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM THOMAS SED- DON, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Minersville, in the county of Schuylkilland State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Battery, of which the following is a specication.
This invention is an improved construction of electric battery, the object being to provide an exceedingly cheap and simple construction of battery which shall have a greater voltage than batteries now in common use and one in which the polarization will be reduced to a minimum.
With these objects in View the invention consists in the peculiar 'construction of the various parts and in their novel manner of combination or arrangement, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l represents a battery constructed in accordance with my invention, part of the casing being broken away and the top removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on a plane at right angles to the section shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the carbon electrode. Fig. 5 is a top plan view. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view showing the top of the zinc electrode. v
In carrying out my invention I employ a case A, which is preferably constructed of hard rubber or some similar suitable material. Grooved strips B are arranged at regular intervals upon opposite sides of the case A, said strips being formed integral with the case or attached thereto, as preferred, said strips being of a non-corrosive and non-conducting material. These strips serve as guides for the zinc plates C, said plates being formed 'with shouldersC at their upper ends, which rest upon theupper ends of the strips B, and thereby support the plates within the case A. A wire C;a is connected to one of the shoulders C', and the series of wires-C2 are wires D2, said wires D2 being connected by al common conductor-wire D3, thereby providing proper terminals for the battery. These vshoulders D also serve to support the electrode D, said shoulders resting uponthe upper edges of the strips B. The zinc plates are formed with any desired number of perforations C'l to permit circulation ofthe exciting uid with which the case is iilled. The shoulders upon the zinc and carbon electrodes support vthe said electrodes within the case a vshort distance above the bottom, and a discharge-cock E is arranged at one side of the case adjacent to the bottom for the purpose of drawing off the liquid when desired.
It Vwill thus be seen that I provide an eX- ceedingly simple construction of battery, and practical demonstration has proven that the batteryrconstructed in this manner is of eX- ceedingly strong voltage and has a very small internal resistance.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a battery the combination with a cell or case having vertically-grooved strips arranged upon oppositev sides, of the zinc plates arranged in the said groove and having shoulders at their upper ends adapted to rest upon the strips, and the carbon electrodes having shoulders at their upper ends, said carbon electrodes being hollow and adapted to receive a depolarizing solution, substantially as set forth.
