Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QEFTCE,
RICHARD V6LKER, OF BUDAPEST, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
EMBOSSED WALL-COVERING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 703,863, dated July 1, 1902.
Application filed April 2, 1902. Serial No. 101,132. (No model.)
To aZZ whom/it may concern:
Be it known that LRICHAED VoLKER,a subject of the King of Wiirtemberg, residing at Budapest, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washable Embossed Wall- Ooverings and Methods of Manufacturing the Same; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a manufacture of washable embossed wall-coverings which consists mainly in producing an easily solidifying and hardening compound, such as here inafter described, backing it with paper, woven fabric, wood, or sheet-zinc, the said mass being introduced into suitable molds by pouring, rolling, or pressing, and after solidifying and hardening it is removed from the mold, whereby there will at once be obtained an embossed washable surface upon the pa per, woven fabric,w0od, or zinc backing which is applicable as wall-covering.
For the purpose of the said manufacture I first produce from a model of the desired design a mold of glue, gypsum, sulfur, asphalt, zinc, or the like, and into this I introduce a liquid or plastic compound, consisting of a mixture of magnesium chlorid, gypsum, chalk, asbestos, magnesite, and dextrine, either by pressing, rolling, or pouring. Upon this mass is then laid a backing of paper, woven fabric, sheet-zinc, or wood, said backing corresponding in size to that of the mold, and the whole is then uniformly distributed and pressed into the mold. When the mass has completely hardened, which only takes a short time, it is removed from the mold and can then be at once used as an embossed wall-covering,which will be found to adhere so perfectly to the said backing that, provided the embossed design be not in excessive high relief, the covering can be rolled up without deterioration.
As suitable proportions for the above-dc scribed compound maybe taken twenty parts magnesite, ten parts asbestos, thirty parts gypsum or chalk, twenty parts dextrine, and twenty parts magnesium chlorid. According to circumstances these proportions may be varied and one or other of the said substances can be omitted. Also any desired color may be imparted to the mass by the addition of a suitable pigment.
I claim as my invention- 1. A wall-covering consisting of a suitable backing carrying a compound consisting of magnesite, asbestos, gypsum, dextrine and magnesium chlorid.
2. A wall-covering consisting of a backing of woven fabric, and a plastic composition secured thereto consisting of magnesite, asbestos, gypsum, dextrine and magnesium chlorid.
3. A wall-covering consisting of a backing of suitable material and a plastic composition secured thereto, consisting of twenty parts of magnesite, ten parts of asbestos, thirty parts gypsum, twenty parts of dextrine and twenty parts of magnesium chlorid.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RICHARD voLKER.
