SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 703,733, dated July 1, 1902.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN MAUSER, residing in New York, borough of Bronx, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Registers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in the machine forregistering barrels for which Letters Patent No. 268,926, dated December 12, 1882, were granted to O.- M. Miiller and myself as joint inventors, and whichis intended to be used in breweries for counting and registering the kegs or barrels according to their size, in the course of shipping the same.
The invention is intended to be used for registering various standard sizes of barrels such as one-half, one-quarter, and one-sixth barrels-as they are conveyed past the apparatus; and for this purpose the invention consists of a barrel-register which comprises a suitable bed, an inclined supporting-frame secured thereto, a registering-indicator mounted at one side of the inclined supportingframe, a swinging and counterbalanced lever provided with a roller and which is actuated by the barrels that are passed on a suitablyprovided waybelow the machine and in contact with the roller, an oscillating frame connected with said counterbalanced lever and having a partially circumferential surface, projections provided thereon, pivoted and spring-actuated latches, means for connecting said spring-actuated latches with the registering-indicator, a slide-frame provided on the inclined supporting-frame and operated simultaneously with the oscillating frame, a notched side plate secured thereto, a fulcrumed and spring actuated pawl arranged on said slide-frame and adapted to engage said notched side plate, and means for releasing said fulcrumed pawl at the end of the return motion of the oscillating frame after the registering-indicator has been actuated to register the barrel that has raised the oscillating frame in passing the machine; and the invention consists, further, of certain details of construction and combinations of parts which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved machine for counting barrels, showing the same in its normal position ready for use. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.. Figs. 3 and 4 are elevations, partly in sect-ion, on line 3 3, Fig. 1, showing the parts in two different positions; and Figs. 5 and (J are details showing the connection of the sector-shaped frame, with the slide-frame in its normal and shifted positions, respectively.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the bed of my improved machine for registering barrels and consists of the parallel beams A and the plate A The bed is arranged in operative relation with any suitable way, conveyer, or elevator for the barrels, so that the barrels in passing the apparatus actuate the same and are registered according to their sizes. Upon the plate A is mounted securely an inclined supporting-frame B, that is provided with a registering-indicator 0, arranged at a side edge thereof, a slide-frame D upon its upper inclined face, and an oscillating frame F, supported from the under side and adapted to operatein vertical oscillating motion through the rectangular opening thereof. To the under side of the beams A is pivotally arranged a swinginglever F, which carries a roller F at its free end and which is supported by the rod f from the lower end of the oscillating frame E. Anair-cush ion device G is arranged upon the plate A of the bed of the machine and has a pis: ton-rod g pivotally connected with the upper leg of the oscillating frame E. The oscillating frame E is secured on a pivotal shaft E, which has suitable bearings on the under side of the inclined supporting-frame B. An arcplate E is connected with the radial legs of the oscillating frame E and is provided with longitudinal slots 6, that are arranged in vertically-different planes, one above the other, in which are adj ustably secured projections c 0 6 These projections vary in length from the longest at the bottom to the shortest at the top. The upper radial leg of the oscillating frame F is provided with a pivotal connection c for the piston rod G of the air-cushion device, which device is pivotally mounted upon suitable standards, so that it will follow the motion of the slide-frame D and which serves to take up the shocks that are exerted by the barrels as they actuate the apparatus and also permit a slow return of the oscillating frame E and the lever F to their normal positions after they have been raised by the barrels. On the upper face of theinclined supporting-frame Bis guided the slideframe D, that has at its upper end a guideplate D, which has atits ends the longitudinal slots (Z, arranged to be guided along the headed studs (Z, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4-. The lower end of the slid e-frame D is guided on a stationary center pin 6Z3, that is secured in the lug d on the lower end of the inclined supporting-frame B, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6. The guide-plate D is provided with ears d adjacent its ends that carry a pivotal shaft L, on which are pivoted and suitably spaced apart to lie in planes corresponding to the projections on the arc-plate of the oscillating frame E spring-actuated latches Z Z Z. These spring-actuated latches Z Z Z are connected with the arms 0 of the registeringindicator C by the rods 0 0 0 respectively.
The transverse shaft E, to which the oscillating frame E is fulcrumed,is provided at one end with a projecting cam Z, which engages a downwardly-extending arm 91, attached to the adjacent side of the slide-frame D, so that when the oscillating frame E is moved in upward direction the cam i engages the arm Z and moves thereby the slide-frame D in upward direction on the inclined supportingframe B.
Eulcru med on the upper face of the inclined supporting-frame B at one side of the slideframe D is a spring-actuated pawl 19, which is provided with a curved lower end 19, that is adapted to be engaged by the projecting pin /1 secured on the pivotal shaft E adjacent the cam 2'. The upper end of the pawl 19 is provided with a spring 13 that serves to keep the end of the pawl in contact with the notched plate 19 carried on the adjacent side of the slide-frame D. Simultaneously with the oscillations of the oscillating frame E the cam causes the slide-frame D to move by wiping against the depending arm 2'. The slideframe D will be moved in upward direction to a greater or less extent, according to the various. sizes of barrels that raise the swinging lever F and the oscillating frame E, and the upper end of the spring-actuated pawl is adapted to engage the notched plate 2) in order to support the slide-frame in outward position until the oscillating frame E is lowered sufficiently to carry the projecting pin t" into engagement with the curved end 17 of the pawl, so as to disengage the same from the notched plate 19 and allow the slide-frame D to return to its normal position under the action of its own weight. The projections e e e on the oscillating frame E are raised to the height of the latches Z Z Z respectively, as barrels of one-sixth, one-quarter, and onehalf sizes actuate the apparatus. In the full sweep of the oscillating frame E, as when ac tuated by a half-size barrel, the slide-frame D is moved upwardly to its limit and the spring-actuated pawlp, engaging the notched plate 173, retains it in such position. The projection e being the longest, it is adapted to engage its respective latch Z, while the slide frame is retained in raised position, and the other latches Z Z are maintained out of the path of the projections e e by reason of the same being shorter than the projection 6 so that upon the return motion of the oscillating frame the projection e will engage its respective latch Z and actuate the registering indicator 0. The slide-frame D is retained in this position until the oscillating frame E has returned to the point where the projection c has passed below the latches, when the projecting pin L disengages the springactuated pawl and the return of the slideframe takes place, so that the latches Z Z cannot engage with the projections c 6 when the device is actuated by a half-size barrel. \Vhen a one-quarter-size barrel actuates the apparatus, the oscillating frame E is raised to the height where the projection e reaches its respective latch Z and the slideframe D is moved in upward direction far enough for the latch Z to be retained out of the path of the projection c, and upon the return of the oscillating frame the projection 0 will engage the latch Z thereby actuating the registering-indicator, and so when a one-sixthsize barrel actuates the apparatus the pro jection 6 will engage with its respective latch Z and cause the actuation of the registering-indicator with but a slight movement of the slide-frame, which is insufficient to cause the spring-actuated pawl to engage with the notched plate. It will be seen, therefore, that by a full sweep of the oscillating frame, as when actuated by a one-half-size barrel, the slide-frame moves upwardly to its limit and is retained in such position, so that upon the return of the oscillating frame the projection e which is the longest, is the only one that will engage with its latch, while the others pass their respective latches without engaging therewith; also,when a one-quartersize barrel actuates the device the slide-frame is moved sufficiently that the projection 8 cannot engage with its latch Z and only the projection c engages its latch; but when a one-siXth-size barrel actuates the device the slide-frame has but a slight movement, as the oscillating frame is raised only high enough for the projection e to engageits latch Z and does not, therefore, cause the cam t' to operate the slide-frame. By this construction it will be apparent that barrels of various sizes can be accurately and reliably registered.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a barrel-register, the combination, with an inclined supporting-frame secured to a suitable bed, of a registeririg-indicator, an oscillating frame, means for actuating said IIO oscillating frame, means provided on said inclined supporting-frame for actuating said registering-indicator, and means on said oscillating frame for operating said registeringindicator-actuating means, substantially as set forth.
2. In a barrel-register, the combination, with an inclined supporting-frame secured to a suitable bed, of a registering-indicator, an oscillating frame, a swinging lever connected at its free end with said oscillating frame, means provided on said inclined supportingframe for actuating said registering-indicator, and means on said oscillating frame for operating said actuating means, substantially as set forth.
3. In a barrel-register, the combination, with an inclined supporting-frame secured to a suitable bed, of a registering-indicator, an oscillating frame, a swinging lever pivotally secured to said bed and having an antifriction-roller mounted at its free end, means connecting said free end thereof with said oscillating frame, means provided on said inclined supporting-frame for actuating said registering-indicator, and means on said oscillating frame for operating said actuating means, substantially as set forth.
4. In a barrel-register, the combination, with an inclined supporting-frame secured to a suitable bed, of a registering-indicator, an oscillating frame, a swinging lever having its free end connected with said oscillating frame, spring-latches provided on said inclined supporting-frame, means connecting said latches with said registering-indicator, and means provided on said oscillating frame for operating said spring-latches, substantially as set forth.
5. In a barrel-register, the combination, with an inclined supporting-frame secured to a suitable bed, of a registering-indicator, an oscillating frame, a swinging lever connected at its free end with said oscillating frame, latches pivotally mounted on said inclined supportingframe, means connecting said latches with said registering-indicator, and projections provided on said oscillating frame to engage said latches, substantially as set forth.
6. In a barrel-register, the combination, with an inclined supporting-frame secured to a suitable bed, of a registering-indicator, an oscillating frame, a swinging lever connected at its free end with said oscillating frame, latches pivotally mounted on said inclined supporting frame and arranged suitably spaced apart, means connecting said latches with said registering-indicator, and projections provided on said oscillating frame, being arranged in separate planes corresponding with said latches, substantially as set forth.
'7. In a barrel-register, the combination, with an inclined supporting-frame secured to a suitable bed, of a registering-indicator, an oscillating frame, a lever pivoted to said bed and being connected with said oscillating frame, a slide-frame guided on said inclined supporting-frame, latches mounted on said slide-frame, means for sliding said slideframe, and projections on said oscillating frame arranged in corresponding planes with said latches, substantially as set forth.
8. In a barrel-register, the combination, with an inclined supporting-frame secured to a suitable bed, of a registering-indicator, an oscillating frame, a lever for actuating said oscillating frame,a slide-frame guided on said inclined supporting-frame, latches pivotally mounted on said slide-frame'and being arranged horizontally spaced apart, means for sliding said slide-frame on said inclined supporting-frame, and adjustable projections of different lengths arranged on said oscillating frame in corresponding vertical planes with said latches, substantially as set forth.
9. In a barrel-register, the combination, With an inclined supporting-frame secured to a suitable bed, of an oscillating frame having an arcplate, a pivotal shaft provided on the underside of said inclined supporting-frame, said oscillating frame rigidly mounted thereon, a registering-indicator secured to said inclined supporting-frame, an air-cushion device supported on said bed and being connected with said oscillating frame, a swinging lever for actuating said oscillating frame, a slide-frame guided on said inclined supporting-frame, apivotal shaft provided at the upper end of said slide-frame, latches mounted and spaced apart on said pivotal shaft of the slide-frame, means for operating said slide-frame, means connecting said latches with said registering-indicator, and adjustable projections of different lengths secured on said arc-plate of the oscillating frame, being arranged in vertical planes of said latches, substantially as set forth.
10. In a barrel-register, the combination, with an inclined supporting-frame, secured to a suitable bed, of an oscillating frame, a pivoted shaft for said oscillating frame, a slide-frame guided on said inclined supporting-frame, a depending finger on said slideframe, and a cam provided on said pivoted shaft adapted to cooperate with said depending finger simultaneously with the motion of the oscillating frame, substantially as set forth.
11. In a barrel-register, the combination,
with an inclined supporting-frame, of an os-.
cillating frame, a pivotal shaft journaled at the under side of said inclined supportingframe, said oscillating frame mounted thereon, a slide-frame guided on said inclined supporting-frame, a finger depending from one side thereof, a cam on said pivotal shaft adapted to engage the same, a spring-actuated pawl mounted adjacent one side of the slide-frame, a notched plate on said slideframe, and means for actuating said pawl, substantially as set forth.
12. In a barrel-register, the combination, with an inclined supporting-frame, of an 0s i0 adjacent said slide-frame, a notched plate provided on said slide-frame for said pawl,
and a pin on said pivotal shaft adapted to engage said curved end of the spring-actuated pawl, substantially as set forth.
