Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK FRANKE, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO S. D.
ORUSE, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
PlLLOW-BRUSHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,722, dated July 1, 1902. Application filed November 25, 1901 Serial No. 83,536. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK FRANKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jeiferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful PilloW-Brusher, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to machines for brokenaway and one of the cleats for holding the brush material removed and placed above.
Similar reference-numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The case 1 with the conveyor 3 and the brush 2 constitute the body of the machine.
4 is the opening in the top of the case over which the pillow is moved.
5 is the pulley by which the brush is driven.
6 is the driving-shaft.
7 represents the flanges, which carry the brushes.
8 represents the cross-bars, which are fastened into the flanges 7 and carry the brush material.
9 represents the brushes.
10 represents the bolts for fastening the brush material.
10 represents the bolt-apertures in cleat 14.
11 is the circular bottom of the case.
12 represents the metal hubs, which carry flanges 7.
13 represents metal bands placed over 8, and 14 represents the removable cleats which are bolted against the brush material.
I prefer to make the brushes 9 of broomstraw. When it becomes worn, it may be set up by loosening the bolts 10, setting up the brush material, and then fastening again.
Half the cleats, as 14:, are removable for the application and renewal of the brush material. The others, 8, are firmly fastened into the flanges 7. The hubs 12 are firmly keyed to the shaft 6.
The conveyer or flue 3 extends to the bottom of the case and curves under the brush, and thus, with the centrifugal action of the brush, produces a draft and consequent suction at the opening 4.
In using the machine pillows soiled with lint, dust, and down are moved over the mouth 4. The action of the brush and the suction together thoroughly and quickly cleans them, and the dirt is carried wherever led by the conveyer.
Having thus described my invention, so that any one skilled in the art pertaining thereto may make and operate it, I do not desire to claim all the parts broadly; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pillow-brushing machine, the combination of a case, provided with a table-top and a longitudinal opening in said table-top over which the pillow or other object to be brushed is moved and exposed to the action 'of a brush, a shaft journaled longitudinally in said case, a revoluble, combined brush and fan, having renewable and adjustable brush material, secured on said shaft and a driving-pulley secured onsaid shaft outside of 'said case, substantially as specified.
2. In a machine for brushing pillows, the combination of a case, provided with a tabletop and a longitudinal opening in said tabletop over which the pillow or other object to be brushed is moved and exposed to the action of a brush, a shaft journaled longitudinally in said case, a revoluble, combined brush and fan, having renewable and adjustable brush material, secured on said shaft, a semicylindrical bottom in said case under said brush, the axis of which is-to the rear relative to the aforesaid shaft, and a flue or conveyor communicating with said semicylindrical bottom, for carrying away the refuse, substantially as specified.
In a pillow-brushing machine, the combination of a case provided with an opening for exposing a brush, and a revoluble brush comprising a shaft, disks firmly secured to said shaft, bars joining said disks at their periphery and having their ends secured in the disks, bolts passing transversely through said bars, separable cleats pierced with apertures for, and secured to said bars with said bolts, and brush material adj ustably and re- 1 cylindrical bottom 11 which is more distant newably secured between and by said bars and cleats, substantially as specified.
4. In a brushing-machine, the combination of a case 1, provided with an opening 4 for exposing the article to be brushed to the action of a brush, a brush 2, journaled in said case, and a semicylindrical bottom 11 in said case, the surface of which is near the brush in front and recedes from the brush in the direction of its motion, and a flue or conveyer 3, communicating with the part of said semi- I from the brush, 2, all so coacting as to start removable matter from a pillow or other article, and, by the centrifugal action of the brush and the expanding bottom, create suction at the opening 4 and draw aforesaid removable matter into the case 1 and expel it through the flue 3, substantially as specified.
