GEORGE ILSLEY ROBERTS, OF NEW ROCHELLE, NEW YORK.
TRAP OR SEPARATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,610, dated July 1, 1902.
l Application and rem-m 7,1902; Seriallio. 93,038. (No an.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE lLsLErBoB- ERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing in New Rochelle, Westchester. county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam orWater Traps or Separators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the improvement of that style of steam or-water trap or separator shown and described in Letters Patent of theUnited States granted to me under date of August 3, 1897, and May 31, 1898, Nos. 587,560 and 604,844, and has for its present object the saving of heat from the water of engine condensation itself, as well as the saving of the heat abstracted from the steam or vapor by or and removal of any contained grease, oil, lubricant, or other foreign matters and the making use of the same or any additional heatderived from or discarded by said steam or vapor as a means for heating or assisting in the heating of water for boiler-feed or other uses and purposes.
- My improvements consist in the special construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, portions, or details comprising the apparatus, as hereinafter shown,
described, and claimed.
Figure 1 represents a central longitudinal section of an apparatus provements. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section of the same looking toward the coilcarrying partition. Fig. 3represents an outer or end view of the same, showing a detail of the attachments at the water end of the apparatus.
Similar letters of reference designate like parts or portions in all the figures.
Letter A designates a the several compartments of the apparatus. The shell may of course be constructed of any desired shape, form, or configuration. It is here shown cylindrical in outline.
Letter B designates an upper portion or compartment set off for the reception of the exhaust-steam from engine or power plant from which grease, oil, lubricant, or other material are to be separated and extracted.
during the separation, withdrawal,
main shell inclosing Letter 0 designates a lower portion or compartment set o'lf for the reception of the extracted grease, oil, lubricant, or other material extracted from the steam or vapor.
Letter D designates bars, clips, or other open means for carrying the baffling devices E for separating andextracting purposes. Letter F. designates a transverse'partition extending, as shown, from beneath the steam or vapor outlet at B downwardly to the bottom of main shell A.
Letter H designates an end portion or compartment set off for the reception of all return waters from the heating plant.
Letters B and B designate admission and discharge openings for the steam or vapor passing through compartment B, the cleansed steam passing regularly out at B for use in steam heating or like low-pressure purposes.
Letters 0' and H designate the usual gage attachments for indicating rip and water levels in compartments 0 and H.
Letter T designates a pump-governing device operated by the float 1 to supply or cut off the steam to said pump. The suction of the pump is connected to outlet-pipe K as a means for emptying compartment IT. This pump-governing device may, however, be dispensed with and any other well-known means'made use of for emptying said compartment.
Letters 0 and H designate outlets for blowing out compartments 0 and H after usua plurality of branch bent tubes, or coils rom the walls or partition F of compartment l-I into compartment 0, the inof said compartments, tubes, or
coils connecting with and allowing the contents of compartment H to enter an circulate through. Such chambers or coils are preferably located above and-below the surface level of the grease, oil, l ubricant,- or other material in compartment 0, so that their contents shall be exposed to and receive all the heat possible from the surrounding steam or vapor or the contained drip material. Letter K designates one or more pipe connections through which all the water returns, drips, drainings, and discharges comsteam using or ing from the steam-power,
ments B and H for the admission of heat and through pipe P for the admission of extra water. Clean steam passes from compartment B at its outlet end to compartment H and carries heat to the contained water.
heating systems reach compartment H for storage or reheating.
K designates an inlet branch pipe and controlling-valve.
K designates an outlet branch pipe and controlling-valve. ditional \vatei is required beyond that fur- K designates aspecial connection between iiished by the usual ieturns steam is admitthe return-pipe K and outlet-pipe K ted to the water-piping P at its enlarged por- K designates a pipe branch from returntion, where it mingles with the admitted water to raise it to for pump for boilerpipe and valve concompartments B and H,
