HYDRAULIC MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 703,451, dated July 1, 1902. Application filed November 5, 1901. Serial No. 81,240. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JOHN I. NEWBURG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vicksburg, in-the county-of Warren' and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements inHydraulic Motors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in.
motors, and contemplates the provision in either a hydraulic or a pneumatic motor of a A wheel which, while capable of enabling a cur# rent of Water or air to exert considerable leverage on and easily turn the shaft on which the wheel is carried and otherwise highly efficient in operation, is simple and compact in construction and embodies no parts that are liable to get out of order after a short period of use.
The improved wheel is designed more particularly for use in a hydraulic motor, andtherefore will be described in conjunction with the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a rear elevation of the motor embodying my improvements as it appears in its proper operative position in a running stream, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. vl.
In the said drawings similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both Views, referring to which- A A are two floats arranged parallel in the stream and at about the proportional distance illustrated apart, B B hangers connected to and depending from the floats andprovided With suitable bearing-boxes a, and C the im'- proved wheel mounted in the hangers and disposed between the iioats, with its end presented to the current in the stream. The said wheel in the preferred embodiment of the invention is carried by a shaft b, journaled in the boxes a and equipped with a sprocket b or other means for transmitting power, and'it is preferably madeup of parallel circular rims c,-hubs d, fixed on the shaft by setscrews e or other suitable means,

In addition to each blade being attached to both rims c at itsv ends it will be seen that the Vedges of the blades are in planes parallel with that of the axis of the Wheel, although the edges themselves are oblique as to the axis; also, that the blades are located at equal intervalsabout the shaft, with the result that the forward portion-z'. e., the upstream portion-7L of each rests in advance of the rear portion 'L' of the one which precedes it with reference to thedirection in which the wheel turns. From this itfollows that with the Wheel submerged in the stream, as shown in Fig. l, the current acting against the entire Varea of the blade-faces presented toit will rotate the wheel in the direction indicated by arrow. It will also be observed that by virtue of the large surfaces which the faces of the blades present to the current and the leverage afforded by the described connection of the blades to the rims c alone of the wheel the current is enabled `to easily rotate the shaft b and drive any machinery that may be connected therewith.A
When desirable, a plurality of the wheels C mayobviously be `fixed on a common shaft l without departing from the scope of my innot desire, however, to be understood as conning myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts as described, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my claim.
