OORN-HARVESTER.
$PEGIFIUATION forming part of Letters PatentN0.-703,395, dated July 1, 1902. Applicationfiledrl'uly 18, I901. $erial No. 68,805. (No model.)
To (all whmn, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND R. EVERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bigstone, in the county of Grant and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Harvesters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for cutting and gathering cornstalks, and has'i'or its ob ject to provide a device of the class described which will be reasonablein cost of manufacture and simple and effective in operation.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan View of my invention; Fig. 2, a side view in elevation; Fig. 3, a front view in elevation of the doors. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the doors and means for pivoting the operatingrod thereto.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, A represents the body of my corn-harvester, having the front steering-truck B and the rear truck C. The floor D of-- the body A is made slanting at the front and side, as shown at (Land a cutting edge E is mounted thereon;' On the two sides and in the cent-er are arranged vertical standards, (indicated by the letter F,) on the top of which are secured horizontal bars G G G. The spaces between the bottoms of the standards F and back of the floor D are left open and communicating with the ground for the purpose hereinafter stated. Extending over the open spaces and secured to the uprights F are short brackets, (indicated by the letter I-I,) to which are hinged the doors I, which are of sufficient width to when closed form a right angle at their meeting edges 2'.
K represents levers pivotally mounted on p the floor D by means of the cleats L and bolts Z. To the front of each lever K is fixed a toestrap 7c, and at the rear a rod M connectsthe lever with the top of one of the pair of doors I. N represents rods that connect the door with which is connected the lever K near its upper edge with the door opposite thereto near its lower edge by suitable means, the means shown in the drawings being eyelets n at each end of the rod N inserted over rounded bolt ends on strap-irons O, fixed to the doors I.
P represents forwardly-extending guards on each side of the harvester and raised above the cutting edges E, while Q represents pieces of spring metal fixed to the guards P and extending inwardly toward the center of the harvester.
R represents seats of any suitable form, the
seat on the right of the machine bei'ngmounted on the top of guard P on that side of the machine, while the seat in the center is supported bya suitable standard 0-.
S is a foot-rest attached to the guard P.
T is a support for the driving-lines.
In operation the horse is started between two rows of corn, the Wheels of the front truck being so spaced as to run between the rows. The operators sit on the seats R, the one in the centerhaving charge of the horse as well as attending to gathering the stalks as they are cut. 7 The stalks are guided by the guards P and springs Q against the cutting edges E. Just before the stalks are out they are grasped by the operator and held until the cutting edge severs them, when they are thrown by him into the trough made by the doors'Lthe standards Fahd barsGserving to guide the cornstalks and cause them to fall on the doors I. As soon as the operator sees he has enough stalks on the doors I he presses the lever K downward with his foot, thus pushing upwardon the top of the door to which is connected the lever K and by means of the rod N, mounted at the upper edge of the same door and the lower edge of the other, opens the doors simultaneously and permits the stalks to drop to the ground, after; which the operator raises the lever by pulling upward on'the toe-strap 7c, and the doors are closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. 'In'a corn-harvester, a trough for receiving the severed stalks comprising two doors pivoted near their center, a rodpi'votallyc'onnected to one doornear its upper edge and-to the other near its lower edge, andme'a'ns for.
positively opening and closing the doors,,sub,- stantially as shown and described. k
2. In a corn-harvester, doors pivoted near their center and forming a rectangular trough, a rod pivotally connected to one door near its upper edge and to the other near its lower edge, and asuitably-mounted lever connected to one of said doors for operating same, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a corn-harvester, a platform having slantingly disposed edges, cutting edges mounted thereon, standards at the rear of said platform, doors mounted on said standards and pivoted near their center to form a rectangular trough, a rod pivotally connected to one door near its upper edge and to the other near its lower edge, and means for positively opening and closing the doors, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a corn-harvester, a platform ha'ving slantingly disposed edges, cutting edges
