ALONZO W. IRISH, OF ROCHESTE it, MINNESOTA.
' Letters Patent No. 70,337, dated Octoberi29, 186T.
IMPROVED PROCESS OF TANNING.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ALONZO W. IRISH, of Rochester, in the county of Olmstead, and in the State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Process for Tunning;" anddo hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and-exact description thereof.
My process for tanning is substantially as follows:
I first take about four (4) quarts of unslaked lime and slake it, then add two (2) quarts of. ashes, and fill the barrelone-half full of water. As soon as the hides will hair I rinse them in clean water and place them into another barrel filled with liquid composed substantially as follows: Four quarts of hen manure to onehalf G) barrel of water. This is to take the lime out of the hides, when they are again rinsed and ready for the tanning liquid. I first fill a barrel half full of water zmd place ten ("10) pounds of boiled tag-alder in it; then add one (1) pound of dissolved japonica, two pounds of ;oil of vitriol, one and one-half (Ilounce of creosote, two (2) ounces spirits of salt, six (6) pounds salt. Mix well by stirring, and let the whole stand over night. If light hides, such as calf, are being tanned, they should be stirred every day for four or five days, and for heavy hides they should be stirred for about ten days, and then taken out, placed into another barrel containing the same kind of liquid, and stirred for ten days more. After being taken out of the first liquid they should be well aired for at least a half of a day before putting into the second. When thus tanned they should be sleeked oil' and have neats-foot oil applied to them before dry.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described process for tanning, when composed of the ingredients as set forth and for the purposes specified In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of April, 1867.
ALONZO W. IRISH.
