JEAN ALEXANDRE LAOOTE, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
SCUTCHING OR FIBER- PREPARING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,058, dated May 27, 1902. Application filed March 14,1901. Serial No. 51,110. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J EAN ALEXANDRE LA- ICGTE, a citizen of the Republic of France, and
aresident of Paris, France, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to scutching or Fiber Preparing Machines, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to a new form of scutching or fiber-preparing machine for converting into fiber ready for spinning or to be employed in spinning strips of vegetable substance which have been broken or prepared in some suitable manner, but preferably in the manner described in my application for Letters Patent, No. 51,109, of even date.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a machine constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan.
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
The machine comprises, essentially, two pressing devices a and b, a being movable and consisting of a drum or roller having a reciprocating as well as a rotary motion, and the other device,b,being stationaryior fixed, but adjustable in every direction. This presser device b is adapted simply to bear against the drum or roller a.
The stalks to be treated are placed between the pressing devices, and by the rotation of the drum or they are drawn forward, transformed into fibers ready for treatment and containing no foreign matter. A drawing pulley c is keyed upon a shaft (1, which carries a cam 6, into which projects a roller or stud f on a boss g, carried by a sleeve h on the shaft 2' of the drum. The former shaft 61 is provided with an endless screwj, which imparts motion to a worm-pinion 70 on a shaft Z, and by a similar arrangement of endless screw and pinion this shaft Z imparts motion to the shaft 2' of the drum or. The
slidably keyed.
motion is imparted to the sleeve h and the "side bars suitably pivoted to lugs or brackets 0", b indicates two rails or cross-bars fixed near the outer ends of the side bars, 79 indicates wires arranged closely together and the upper ends of which are clamped between the cross-bars b, and 12 indicates a pair of cross-bars fixed to the inner ends of side bars I) and between which the lower ends of the wires 1) are clamped. The wires 11 provide channels or grooves on the under face of the compressor-frameb b b b and the planes of which are parallel with those of the annular grooves of drum (1.. The said frame bears against drum a under its own weight or by that of weights 8, suitably adjustable.
The stalks or stems may be supplied to the machine from a table or hopper, or they may be placed directly between the pressing devices.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of mysaid invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- In a scutching or fiber-preparing machine, the combination of a rotary longitudinallyshifting compressor drum provided with transverse annular grooves, and a compressorframe arranged above the said drum and pivoted relatively thereto, so as to rest on the drum, said frame being equipped, on the face adjacent the drum, with a plurality of closelyarranged wires, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. A
JEAN ALEXANDRE LAGOTE.
