UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC BITTER, J 1%., OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO \V. A. NEWMAN DORLAND, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOL FOR'FINISHING METAL SURFACES OR THE LIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 700,825, dated May 27, 1902. Application filed February 18, 1901. Serial No. 47,891. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, ISAAC BITTER, Jr. a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 1816 Hamilton street, in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented anew and useful Tool for Finishing Metal Surfaces or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tools for finishing metal surfaces and the like;
and the objects of myinvention are, first, to
provide two substantially parallel knives for scraping the surface to be finished; second, to support said knives so as to enable them to always adapt themselves to the surface to be finished, and, third, to provide means of securing said knives so as not to interfere with their action. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool embodying the main features of my invention, showing the tool attached to a boring-bar.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig.
erably curved or are shape, and from the exterior face of this plate projects one or more knives or scraping edges a. One end of this plate is connected, preferably, by a link. a to the bracket d, so -as to permit the tool a to swing eccentrically to the support 0. Where, as in the instance shown, the support 0 isa boring-bar, the tool a and its knives a are normally concentric with the periphery of the bar 0, but may swing toward or away from the periphery of the bar 0 by reason of the .fiexible connection or link e between one end of the tool a and the bracket (1. To maintain the tool at in normal concentric relationship with the support c, a resilient block b is interposed between the inner face of the tool a and'the periphery of the support a.
r In the modification illustrated in Fig. 3 the bracket g' slides radially in a slot of the borin g-bar h and may be fixed to the bar it when properly adjusted by bolts or other fastening means. The bracket g has a shoulder 9 concentric With the periphery of the bar h, and between this shoulder g and the back of the tool a, the resilient blockb is interposed. The tool a is connected to the end of bracket 9 by the same link connection (5 as hereinbefore used with the bracket d in the form illustrated in Figs. 1 and,2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a tool of the character described, a support, a' curved or arc-shaped tool provided on its outer face with cutting or scraping edges and normally arranged concentric with the periphery of the support, means for flexibly connecting one end of the tool to the periphery of the support so as to permit the tool to swing eccentrically to the support and resilient means interposed between the inner face of the tool and the support.
2. In a tool of the character described, a scraping-tool comprising a curved plate provided on its outer face with scraping edges, a central support, a resilient means interposed between the plate and the support, and a link for connecting one end of said plate to said support and thereby permitting the plate to swing eccentrically toward or away from the periphery of the support.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification .in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ISAAC BITTER, JR, W'itnesses:
D. A. STEWART, S. NITTENBERGER.
