JOHN HESS, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
LACE-PAPER DOILY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,771, dated May 2'?, 1902. Application led February l0, 1902. Serial No..` 93,600. (No model.)
To all whom, t may con/cern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HESS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and Statev them the appearance of afabric doily, and
while these are to be used on a iiat or substantially fiat surface this is rather simple; but when they are to be placed or used on a dish or article so that the corners of the doily protrude or extend over the edges of the dish or article it is more difficult, and the diierence between the paper and fabric doilies is more apparent, as the'paper which it is necessary to use is not soft and pliable like a textile fabric.
The object of my invention is to overcome this diliiculty and to produce a four-cornered doily of paper in imitation of lace or textile fabric having its design so formed and arranged that when a doily of suitable size is placed on a saucer or dish the corners of the doily which protrude or extend beyond the dish will droop gracefully and easily from the edge of the dish. This object I attain in a doily designed as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of a doily embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in cross-section of a doily embodying my invention placed on a saucer, which is also in cross-section.
In Fig. l a lace-paper doily is shown which is substantially square, having the corners a, b, c, and d. A substantially square design, with corners 1, 2, 3, and 4, is formed in the doily, so that each of the corners of the inscribed square is equidistant from the two corners of the doily nearest it. The edges of the inner design or inscribed square are substantially straight and will be formed of sufficient substantiallyrblank material to form a stiff edge to the inscribed square, while the portion of the doily outside of the inscribed square and adjacent to the stiff edge will be formed very open, as shown inFig. l, to make it more Horrible, so that When'the doily is placed on a saucer of suitable size the portions outside of the inscribed design will droop away from the stiff edge.
The design as an .entirety may be varied, the center or inscribed square may be smaller, so that it does not extend to the edges of the doily,or the center design or inscribed square may be larger, soy that the square is not entirely inscribed, but its corners would if its edges were extended fall without the doily; but so long as there are substantially straight stiff edges placed substantially as shown cutting olf the corners of the doily it will come within the spirit of my invention.
I claim- 1. A 4four-cornered lace-paper doily having situated within its borders a substantially square design each of whose corners will lie equidistant from the two corners of the outer border of the doily nearest to them, the edges of the inner substantially square design being formed less flexible than the portions of the doily immediately outside of them.
2. A lace-paper doily having situated within its outer borders a substantially square design whose corners touch or approach near to theY outer border of the doily, the edges of the inner substantially square design being formed less exible than the portions of the doily immediately outside of them.
3. A four-sided lace -paper doily having situated within its outer border a substantially square design whose corners bisect the sides of the doily and whose edges are formed so that they are less pliable than the portions of the doily immediatelyoutside of them.
4. A four-sided doily of lace-paper of such a design that a substantially square design is formed therein whose corners bisect the sides y of the doily and whose sides are formed enough stier than the portions of the doily immediately outside of them to form bending edges.
5. A four-sided doily of lace-paper of.such a design that a substantially square design is formed therein so that each corner of the in- Signed by me at Mi1Waukee,Wisconsin,this ner design will lie equidistant from the two 30th day of January, 19Q2. corners of the outer border of the doily nearest to them, the edges of the inner substan- 5 tially square design being formed less flexible Witnesses:
