c.R.To MPK1Ns, or RocHEsAT-,E n, NEW YORK. Letters Patent No. 70,051, dated October 22, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN MORTISING M'AGHINES.
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, C. R. TOMPKINS, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mortising Maehincs;" and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in whichv Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention applied to a-n ordinary mortising machine,` al portion of the frame being broken away to show the relative arrangement of the parts. Y
Figure 2 is a. detached view ofthe rateheted reversing-barrel, sleeve, and collars.
Figure 3 is a plan ofthe ratchet `or clutching collar.
Figure 4 is a top view 'of the head or flange 0l, showing the notches u into which the V-shaped head of tho clutch t takes. n
` Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to that class of mortising machines having an automatically reversing chisel-stock; and its nature consists in the employment of such an arrangement of devices as will cause the chisel-stock to retain a fixed position upon its axis until the chisel is entirely withdrawn from the timber, when it will be reversed by the extreme downward movement of the table.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I willv describe its construction and operation.
I provide a chisel-stock or mandrel, M, with a feathered sleeve, S. This sleeve has two heads or collars, b and d, between which it has its journal-bearing in the box B. -The upper portion of the sleeve is encircled by a. loose barrel, R, which is secured to the sleeve by a collar, f, and set-screw s, iig. 2. The point of this screw- .may be made to act as the feather, by entering the slot or groove in the shaft or stock M, as shown, or an ordinary feather or key may be applied to the sleeve. The barrel R is provided with a spiral g1oove,g, (fig. 1,) in which the end of the lever D moves'.` I place Iaratchet catchor-pawl, a, `in the lower end of the barrel R, as shown in ig. 2. It is forced down by a suitable spiral spring, n, and catches in the recesses or notches o made in the upper face of the collar b, as shownin figs. 2 and 3. The lower headcl of the sleeve S has two v-shaped notches in its periphery, into either of which the corresponding shaped edge of the locking-boltt is forced by the spring o, iig. '1. The chisel-stock is swivelledv to the cross-head The adjusting-rod E passes through the lever D, and is provided with a spiral spring, J, the lower nd of which rests upon` the lever, and the upper end against the set-nut r. rI he lever is hinged to the frame `of the machine -by the rockshaft F. There is an adjustable locking-bar, y, through which the llever D passes, the bar being slotted to receive it. The chiselmandrel or stock is reciprocated by the pitman P from the ily-wheel W. When the mortising-table T descends,-
the spring J is gathered o1' compressed untilth coils are a'll closed together, which may be made by set-nut, r, to take place just before the table sha-ll lhave reached the limit ,of its downward throw, and thespring thus i becoming rigid forces the bar or lever'AD down, and the barrel R to turn, by forcing the c lutcht to release the i head d, and the expansion of the spring vdrives thc end ofthe lever down 'tothe lower end of the spiral groove g. The locking-latchhaving already `fallen with its wing e, before the pin t', which prevents the possibility of the head t failing to catch in the notch inthe head d. When theV table Works up to the position shown in fig. 1, the barrel R is turned backward, and the'ratchet acatches in the opposite notch, and the locking-latch y is raised, as shown, releasing the p'in c, which` will pass under the wing e before the latch drops at thenext descent of the table, the chisehstock` being firmly-held in thc mean time in position by the head or catch t. The nntp may be made adjustable upon the rod E, to admit of the necessary changes in the elevation of the mortisingtable T.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the adjustablespring-frod E, lever D, reversing scroll-collar R, collared sleeve S, with its projections z', locking-bar y, and the spring catch t, substantially in the manner and for the purposcsherein shown and described.
i C. R. .EOMPKINS.
