citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use-` ful Improvements in Car-Loaders, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in car-loaders of the type' which employ a distributing device adapted to be operated from a line-shaft and supported-within a car in a suitable manner for the purpose of loading the car withgrain` or other commodities of alike nature. However, this invention is not limited to the loading of cars with grain, because it may be used for distributing grain, coal, sawdust, and.
` therefrom; and afurther object' of the invention is toprovide the distributing device with means for directing the discharge of the material in the desired direction and which are simple in construction and easily manufactured. y
In the accompany-ing drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved car-loader shownin .position for use in a railway-car, the line-shaft being located within an elevator-building' and the view being taken from the inside of said building. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the distributing device. Fig. 3 is a central sectional View of the distributing device.
In the drawings similar letters of reference denotel like p'arts in all of'the figures, and referring thereto A designates the wall of the elevator-building, and Ba line-shaft, which is journaled in brackets b, secured on the wall A. This line-shaft is driven by a belt C or in any other suitable manner, and it is provided Vwith a bevel-gearl D, which meshes with a bevel-pinion E,carried by the driving-shaft F. The distributing device preferably consists of a cylinder G, provided with the bearings g pn its sides to receive the driving-shaft F,and the' spider H', rigidly securedonl said shaft within the cylinder and carrying blades I on its arms. The spider may have anynumber of arms, so as toY provide as many blades as may be desired, and these blad es are arranged to revolve with the spider and .the drivingshaft in the cylinder and close to the sides of the periphery thereof. l
The grain or other material is conveyed to thev distributing device by means of a spout .I which leads from thebin or scales in the elevatorand emptiesinto the cylinder through an' opening in its side. The cylinder may be provided with a receiving-opening K on each side of the driving-shaft, or it may have only a single opening, which would preferably be located above the driving-shaft. I provide a swinging cover L for each opening, said covers being pivoted to the cylinder at l and provided with fastening devicesM, whereby they canbe secured rigidly in place. When two receiving-openings are provided for the cylinder and the spout is connected with one of them, it is desirablethat the other should be closed tightly, andkfor this reason I provide some simple fastening device,y Mfor this purpose.
The distributing, deviceV is provided with two discharge-openings inthe periphery of the cylinder and on opposite sides of the driving-shaft, so that the distributing device may be arranged in the middle of the car and the grain discharged from one opening to iill one vend of the car. Vhen this has been accomplished, that opening can be closed'and the other one opened to ll the other end of the car, the spout being changed from one receiving-opening to the other, so as to discharge into the cylinder through the opening on the opposite side of the shaft from the dis charge-opening which is being used.
To'direct the grain away from the distributing device as far as possible in a stream, I provide guide-spouts N, which are hinged at the bottom to the .periphery of the casing at each dischargesopening therein. Each of IOO these discharge-spouts comprises for its bottom a plate n, which conforms to the curvature of the periphery of the cylinder, and sides n', which slide Within the sides of the cylinder. Thedischarge-spoutisconstructed and arranged so that when not in use it may be turned up and secured by a latch O or other device and completely closes the discharge-opening of the cylinder in which it operates, its bottom n forming a continuation of the periphery of the cylinder. This discharge-spout may be provided with suitable devices for regulating its shifting movement, so as to provide for directing the grain discharged by the distributing device to a greater or less elevation. For this purpose I have shown a notched latch-bar S, pivoted on the cylinder and arranged to engage a projecting pin T on the discharge-spout, a sufficient number of notches being provided to enable the proper adjustment of the spout.
The operation of my improved loader will be readily understood from the foregoing description. The d riving-shaft Fis preferably provided with one or more knuckles, so as to permit of the distributer being swung into and out of a car through the doorway and supported and arranged in the car in a convenient position, this flexibility of the shaft being particularly desirable, as the latter is connected with a rigid line-shaft in an elevator and adapted to be located in a railwayear for loading the car with grain, as the arrangement of the loader in the car and its withdrawal therefrom must be accomplished in as little time as possible. The loader may be supported within the car in any desirable manner, as upon the supporting-bars P and cross-bars Q, the bracket R being fastened to the cylinder and one of the cross-bars. The feed-spout J is arranged in the opening K opposite to the end of the car in which the grain is to be distributed, and the dischargespout N is permitted to swing down, as shown in Fig. 2, and will operate to confine the grain to a comparatively solid stream as it is thrown out of the cylinder by the blades of the spider. lVhen that end of the car has been filled, the feed-spout is thrown up into closed position and the other one opened, the feed-spout being transferred to the opposite receivingopening of the cylinder and the operation of the driving-shaft F reversed, so that the other end of the car may be filled.
My present invention may be used in other ways and for other purposes than for loading a car with grain, and its applications and adaptations will be so readily understood that I do not consider it necessary to refer to them in detail. l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a' car-loader, a distributing device comprising a cylinder and a discharge-spout connected with said cylinder on its periphery by a hinged joint and adjustable in an opening therein, substantially as described.
2. In a car-loader, a distributing device comprising a cylinder and a discharge-spout hinged at one end to the periphery of the cylinder and having its bottom curved to correspond with the periphery of the cylinder, substantially as described.
3. In a car-loader, a distributing device comprising a cylinder, a discharge spout hinged on the periphery of said cylinder and adjustable in an opening therein, said spout consisting of a curved bottom and straight sides arranged to be adj usted within the sides of the cylinder, substantially as described.
4. In a car-loader, a distributing device comprising a cylinder, and oppositelyarranged discharge-spouts hinged on the periphery of said cylinder and adjustable in openings therein, substantially as described.
5. In a car-loader, the combination with a driving-shaft, of a distributing device mounted thereon and comprising a cylinder provided with receiving-openings on opposite sides of the driving shaft, oppositely-arranged discharge-spouts hinged on the periphery of said cylinder and adjustable in openings therein, swinging covers for the side receiving-openings, and a spider mounted on the shaft within the cylinder and provided with blades operating therein, substantially as described.
