Tin-Es PATENT QFF-ICE .MQA. KELLER, or mrrLEsrowN PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT 1N. HARVEJSTERS.
To all whom itrmay concern:
.Be it known that I, M. A. KELLER, of Littlestown, in the ,county of Adams, and State of Pennsylvania," have invented a new and Im proved Mowing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, fclea r, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the "accompanying drawin gs,'forming part of this specification. A
The nature of my invention consists in the novel and peculiar arrangement and employment of levers for raising and lowering the cutter-bar of a mowing-machine. v
To enable others skilled in the-art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 is a top-plan view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional elevation of the same from the line w m. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional elevation through the line y y.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the drawings.
A A represent two traction-wheels, of common construction for mowing-machines, with a driving gear-wheel, B, attached to the inside of the wheel A. The said gear-wheel B is provided with teeth upon the inside of the rim, which mesh into and drive a correspondiiig pinion, E. The traction-wheels A A run upon the shaft or axle 0, upon which is mounted the frame F. The frame F being of common construction, a particular description is deemed unnecessary. The said pinion E is rigidly secured to the shaft D, that is provided or with and runs in bearings which are secured to the under side of the frame F. Near the center of the said shaft D is secured a bevelwheel, G, that fits and meshes into a corresponding pinion, E, that is secured to the shaft I, that is also provided with and runs in bearings which are secured to the blocks or bars K, the said blocks being secured to the under side of the frame F. The shaft I extends to the rear end of the machine. .At the outer end of the said shaft I is located and firmly secured a crank-wheel, J that is provided with a crank-pin, a, to which the pitman is attached that connects with the cutters.
A is a box or frame located upon the top of the frame F, extending 'to nearly the front and rear of the frame F, and to which a por tion' of the parts of my machine is attached,
6 e are ratchet-wheels attached 'tojthe axletree or shaft ,0, in which work sprin'g-pawls a n for the purpose of putting in motion the machine; ;but as this device is no, part of my invention, and iswell known, Iwill not describe it further.
is a curved bar, that connects a joint or pivot to the'frontend of the'frame F at ,w, and extends backfonan incline curve. The
rear end connects atrightangles with another bar,IO,jatSi, bya'joint. The said bar 0 runs at right angles to the bar M, and connects by a joint tothe block Kupon the underside of the frame F.
L is a crank-shaft, located and worked upon the front cross-piece of the frame F. To this crank-shaft L is connected a rod, P, that extends back through the rear cross-piece of the frame F, when it turns and forms a loop, as seen at 0 Fig. 1, the end of which passes back through a spring, R, parallel with the main portion of the said rod P, so as to engage in the perforations made in the standardbar Q, for the purpose of holding the cutterbar U in an elevated position. The main portion of the said rod P also passes through a guide or bearing, f, as also a slot, 2, in the pivoted standard-bar Q, the said slot 2 being for the purpose of guiding the bar, so that the perforations in the said bar will correspond with the end of the loop upon the rod P as the bars are elevated and lowered, so that the end of the loop will enter the perforations as the bars are raised, and hold them in an elevated position.
R is a spring secured to the rear end of the frame F, connected by a hole to the end of the loop upon the end of the rod P, for the purpose of pressing back the end of the loop and disengaging it from the perforations in the standard-bar Q, so as to lower the cutter-bar. The standard-bar Q is jointed at its lower end to the bar 0, and is provided with a slot, 2, through which passes the rod P, as before stated.
S is a curved perforated standard-bar, rigidly secured to the bar M, for the purpose of forming a fulcrum for the lever T, the said lever T being rigidly attached to the bar 0.
To this lever T issecured a spring, 3, in which is a lug that engages the perforations provided in the standard S.
W is a lever pivoted to the box or frame A, convenient to the drivers seat for the purpose of assisting in elevating the cutterbar. At the lower end of the said lever W is connected a rod, 6 that extends back and connects with the double crank-shaft A. The said double crank-shaft A has bearings secured to the rear cross-piece of the frame F. This crank-shaft A is connected by links B to the heel of the cutter-bar U. The cutterbar U is hinged to the bar 0, so that its outer end can be raised-up for the purpose of moving from place to place.
0 is the drivers seat, secured to adjustable braces or brackets D the said braces being provided with lips or flanges that fit and move over the top of the box or frame A The seat is also secured to a double crankshaft, G Fig. 2, so thatthe seat is prevented, to some extent, from moving backward or forward by the said crankshaft G j E is the tongue, secured to the front crossbar of the frame F, by which the machine is drawn and operated. When it is desired to elevate the cutter-bar to pass over an obstruction, the lever W is pressed back, which causes the cutter-bar to rise through the medium of the rod e -and double crank-'shaft'A and links B. At the same time the foot of the driver is placed upon the crank L, which is pressed back, which causes the end of the loop 0 to enter the perforation in the bar Q and hold the cutter-bar in an elevated position. By moving the lever T back it causes the bar M to spring and throw up or elevate the points of the cutter-bar, and is very convenient where but a slight elevation is required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The crank-shaft L and rod P, in. combination with the standard-bar Q, bars 0 M,
'leverW, rod 6 double crank-shaft A and cutter-bar U, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. The standard-bar S, lever T, bar 0, and cutter U, in combination with the crank-shaft L, rod P, standard-bar Q, bar M, lever W, rod
'6 and double crank-shaft A, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
M. A. KELLER.
