SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,946, dated May 13, 1902. i
7 Application filed October 20, 1899 Serial No. 734,165. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS OossAa'a citizenof the United Kingdom ofGre at Britain and Ireland, residingeat- 6' Osborne .Place,
Govan, county of Lanark, Scotland, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Machines, of whichthe following is a specification, such' as will enable others skilled in the art to which it make and use the same.
This invention, which relates to oscillatingcylinder printing-machinesi. 2., machines in which the cylinder prints on the backward and forward movementof the bedhas for its object to provide means for automaticallyand intermittently feeding the paper to berom a webinstead of, as heretofore,
printed f in sheets p The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings. I
Figure 1 represents diagrammatically the general arrangement of the improvements as applied to a printing-machine of the kind referred to. Fig. 1 is a transverse sectionof.
Fig. 1 through the vertical centerof the same, i
and Fig. 1 is a detail view of the grippers.
Fig. 2is avertical'section of the means for automatically feeding the paperfrom the web,
this figure showing the relation of the several parts when the main frame is ina position about one-fourth of its entire movement from the mid-positi0nshown in Fig."1,toward the left. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig; 2,showing the main frame in a position on the other side of the mid-position of the machine. Fig. 3 is an elevation of "the race for controlling the movements of a second frame carried by but independently movable upon the main the reciprocatin'g type board or table B in the appertains to tension-roller F, which takes up the slack caused by the to-and-frofmovement of the gripper-frame, then overa guide-roller F and horizontally between a set of grippers G,
comprising a grip-bar and gripping-fingers,
of'. which latter there may be any number strung on a rod extending between the sides of the frame G, the grippers being carried in the traveling frame G, the-parts of which are hereinafter described, thence over a roller H; situated beyond the grippers'G, referred to, and carried-in thesametraveling frame G in the same horizontal plane back and around a roller J, situated behind and lower than the fore-mentioned traveling frame G by mechanism hereinafter particularly described, to effeet the pulling throughof the web (J when the cylinder A is clear of the printing form or table B at each end of the stroke of the printing-machine and at other-times, as hereinafter described. The web 0 is then carried back again in its original directionaround a roller H beneath the roller H, then between a sec- "ond set of grippers G situated immediately below the first-mentioned grippers G and carried in the same traveling frame G, thence around one or more guideerollers K and un- .der theprinting-cylinder A, the web being "thereafter carried aroundguide-rollers K,
grippers G G androllers H J H similar in number and arrangement to those before mentioned and carried in the same frame G, and thence over a guide-roller F andtensionroller F and between a pair of feeding-rollers E, as shown, revolving at'the proper forward to a folder or cutting device, or it. I
may be taken to a spindle D, on which it is wound again. The paper 0 is thus doubled onitself twice before beingledunderthe cylinder A and again'doubled oncitself twice after leaving the cylinder. The feeding of the paper O is effected by the combined action of the grippers G G G G, the rollers E and E, previously referred to, and the rollers J J, carried in the frame I, which engage .with the proper portions of the web at the proper times, the grippers being carried in the traveling frame G, before mentioned, and
speed, being geared to the feed-rolls E and which is operated by means of a rack G, secured to it, gearing with a toothed wheel L, receiving its motion through bevel-wheels M M M or by sprocket-gearing from the oscillating cylinder A. The gripping device is formed by the frames G, situated on either side of the printing-machine within the stationary frames 00 and guided thereon, the frames G being tied together by rods g, extending transversely of the machine'and eapable of turning, which rods in conjunction with pivoted fingers constitute the grippers which hold the web 0 when these act to feed the necessary length of paper. The grippers are caused to grip the paper by means of springs g, such as shown, acting on projections 9 on the rods g, or-coiled springs wound around the rods g and secured thereto and to the frame G may be employed, and these springs are caused to release the paper by the action of projections 00 on the stationary frame :20 upon arms N, keyed on the gripperrods, the grippers G G being actuated by those on one side frame and the grippers G G by those on the other side frame. The second frame Lwhich consists merely of two bars, each having one end of each of the rollers J J centered in it, is guided in bearings Pin the first or traveling frame, as shown in Fig. l, and has its movement imparted to it, as shown particularly at Fig. 2, by racks 1, formed on or secured to each bar, and toothed wheels I gearing with these racks, and a toothed wheel 1 on the shaft 1 carrying these gear-wheels 1 is actuated by a toothed quadrant-arm 1 a roller 1 the end of which travels in a race 0, carried by the stationary framing or, and shown particularly at Fig. 3, and consisting of inclined and horizontal portions forming forward and return passages crossing each other centrally to give to the quadrant-arm I the necessary movement to give the rollers J J their proper length of stroke, according to the size of sheet being printed. This race 0, which is supported from the framing at its mid-point, which is stationary, by brackets, (not shown,) and also at the stationary portions of its ends, as hereinafter described, is provided at various points with spring catches 0 located in pockets or recesses in the back part of the guide-frame O, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, which springcatches yield to allow the roller 1 to pass in one direction, but preventits passage in another direction. These spring-catches consist, preferably, of blocks fitted in pockets 0 in the race 0 and pushed outward by springs 0 these blocks beinginclined at theirouterends, so that by the action upon them of the roller 1 which travels in the directionof the arrows, Fig. 5, the blocks permit of the passage of said roller 1 and spring out again behind it, thereby preventing its movement'other than in the properdirection on the reversal of the motion ofthe frame G. The central portion 0 of the race is preferably pivoted on a stud L, by which the race 0 is carried from a bracket L secured to the machine-framing X, as shown at Figs. 1 and 3, so that portion 0 can be turned to guide the roller I on quadrant-arm I in either direction at the proper time according as the roller I is onits forward or return movement, and instead of the springcatches 0 part of the end portions 0 of the race can be pivoted on the studs L which support the ends of the race from the machine-framing, and worked simultaneously with the central portion 0 by means of levers O and connecting-rods the central portion 0 being actuated from aconnectinglink 0 a slotted lever 0 and from a rod 0 from a cam O on any motion-shaft, as shown at Fig. 3, preferably a shaft having a half-revolution for each copy printed. By altering the position of the rod 0 to the other end of the slotted lever O the general or ultimate direction of the feed of the web 0 is reversed. By ultimate direction is meant that while that portion of the web under the influence of the grippers undergoes a series of movements in opposite directions its ultimate direction is toward the winding on spindle D. The guide-race O can be altered somewhat in form for the purpose of shortening or lengthening the stroke of the quadrantarm I, this being effected by means of screwthreaded spindles 0 attached to the movable portions of the race and which may be actuated by worm-wheels 0, portions of the race being secured to or formed upon nuts 0 secured to the central and end portions by strips 0, also forming portions of the race, the nuts 0 embracing the screw-threaded spindles O and being guided in frames 0 For this purpose a sufficient length of slot is left in the rotatable end portions 0 of the race to suit any length of movement of the frame G. The nuts 0 are moved upward or downward upon the screw-threaded spindle by means of the worm-wheels O on their ends, these wheels 0 being actuated by worms P on a shaft P, which can be turned by hand in order to alter the distance apartof the nuts 0 and consequently the stroke of the quadrant-arm I, to suit the size of sheet being printed. Onesetofgrippersengagesalength of the web 0 on one side of the cylinder A and feeds it forward as the cylinder revolves, while another set of grippers simultaneously engages a length on the other side and draws it elf in the same direction. The to-and-fro movement of the gripper-frame G in unison with the oscillations of the oylinderA is effected by imparting a rocking motion or alternately right and left hand movement of rotation to the sprocket or toothed wheel shaft gearing with the racks G by gearing it with the racks on bed of the printing-machine, or
the frame G may, as shown and described, be geared to the cylinder A.
The cylinder A acts to press the paper onto the type or blocks on the board or table B and effects a printing at each oscillation, and a sufficient length of the web 0 is fed forward touchesthe form or board B in its return oscillation, this length being fed through and printed on the return stroke of cylinder A.
Then this printed portion is drawn through after the cylinder A is clear of and before it again touches the form B in its next oscilla 'tion, and a furtherlength is fed through and printed during the forward oscillation of the cylinder, and the two rollers J J, carried in the second frame I, which is carried by the first or traveling frame G, being actuated to pull through the web 0 when the cylinder has cleared the printing-form B.
The table B of the machine being in its mid-position and the frame G also in mid-position, as shown at Fig. 1, the table B is print ing and is moving from left to right, the frame G moving at the same time from right to left-that is to say, the cylinder and table are both on the backward movement. The two lower sets G G of the grippers are now closed and the top sets G G of grippers are open, the former sets carrying the web 0 along as it is printed at the same speed as the surface speed of the cylinder and table. The cam-roller 1 working in the race 0, is during this motion of the frame G moved down to-the position shown at Fig. 2, thus moving through the gearingand rack the intermediate rollers J J to the right, thereby pulling grippers G2 G previously closed under the action of their springs, now opening. under the action of their projection 00'. The type on the table B has now cleared the cylinder A, and during the remainder of the movement of the main frame G from right to left, in which the grippers G G remain closed and the grippers G2 G remain open, the movement of the frame I from left to right ceases, and, excepting for an infinitesimal period of time, for which the nut 0 is responsible, (this horizontal portion 0 having a function hereinafter explained,) said frame I is traversed from right to left under the action of the quadrant-lever I, the roller of which is durin g this period rising in the race 0. The frame I on being traversed in this direction pulls through that portion of the web first printed and brings down part of a new length to be printed on the movement of the printing-table from right to left-71.12., the forward movedotted lines and marked 2. The printing-table B is now beginning its return movement and the frame G its corresponding return movement, (both moving always in opposite directions,) the roller 1 still farther ascendingalong the slot in the race 0, whereby because of the continued rotation of the quadrant I in this direction the rollers J J are caused to pull through the remaining length of web, which,
along with the new length already pulled through, forms the size of sheet to be printed,
the frame I having now reached its extreme left-hand movement. (Indicated by 3, Fig. 2.) The open sets G G of grippers, owing to the roller I having reached theposition indicated in dotted lines at Fig. 2 and marked 3, have now returned along their projections and almost cleared these, will immediately close,
and the previously-closed sets G G of grippers will on coming into contact with their projections open, and the cam-roller I having reached the end of the horizontal part 0 will begin to descend the slot in the race .0. The frame I will then move in the same direction as the frame G and the roller J and pull another length from the web 0, the tension-roller F taking up the slack, which at this moment by the lessening ofthe length of the loop over the roller J, as shown at Fig. 2, is formed quicker than the winding on spindle D is designed to-take itup, the closed set G G of grippers carrying through the'd'esired length of web along withv thecylinder while it is printing. When the cam-roller 1 has reached the position shown at 4, Fig. 2 the type-table having cleared the cylinder and the open grippers G G4 having cleared their projections, these grippersv are then closed, and the closed grippers (l G3 having engaged their projections are opened and the cam-roller 1 begins to ascend, causing the frame I to move in the opposite direction to the motion of the frame G, and consequently causing the intermediate roller J to pull a new length of web through below the cylinder A to be printed on the motion of the printing form or table B back again from left to right.
The catches O or the pivoted portions in the race are altered at the proper times, the former by removing the inclined yielding portions from their recesses in the race and inserting them with their inclined edges in the contrary direction to suit the direction of travel of the roller 1 and the latter by the mechanism already referred to and the times at which these movements take place may be altered by adjustment of the link 0 in the slot of the lever O in order to cause the quadrant-arm I to take a downward instead of, as formerly, an upward path, and goupward, when before it went downward, and
thus alter the general or ultimate direction 'of the feed of the web 0 should circumstances make such alteration necessary. The grippers are opened and closed when the camroller I is in either of the horizontal portions of the race-i. e., in the nuts O in order that no shifting of the web beneath the grippers shall take place at that time.
A pair of rollers Y, situated above the oscillating cylinder A, each carrying a portion of the Web 0 on the opposite side of the cylinder A from the other, are carried in a movable frame Y, such as shown at Fig. 4, supported by screw-threaded rods Y carried on the machine-frame 00, these rods Y passing through nuts Y formed on the movable frame Y, the rods Y being capable of operation by hand or otherwise, so as to cause the roller on one side of cylinder A to move toward the cylinder to shorten the path of web on that side of the cylinder while the roller on other side of cylinder lengthens the path of the web on its side of cylinder A, or vice versa, and thus shift the web in one direction or the other when printing on second side of web, so as to register the second printing with the first.
A cone pulley Q is provided on a shaft driven by the machine, and a similar conepulley Q on a shaft geared to the two pairs of feeding-rollers E, as previously mentioned, the large end of one cone-pulley being opposite the small end of the other, the rollers E being geared to the shaft carrying the second cone-pulley by a shaft U and bevels U U U the latter wheels U U being so placed in rela tion to the wheels on the roller E that by operating a clutch between these the direction of rotation of the rollers Emay be changed when desired according to the general or ultimate direction of feed of web without altering the direction of rotation of second conepulley. The belt R, which connects the two cones, is shifted along the cones Q Q in one direction or the other by forks S, actuated by a screw-threaded spindle T, according to the rate of feed which is required.
Having now described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an oscillating-cylinder printing-machine, means for automatically and intermittently feeding the paper to be printed from the web, consisting of asliding frame, a rack on said frame geared to a driven toothed wheel, springrippers for engaging the paper, and a second independently movable frame carried by the first-mentioned frame, substantially as shown and described.
2. In oscillating-cylinderprinting-machines for printing from the web, the combination with a sliding frame, of a second frame carried by said sliding frame, gear-wheels centered on the sliding frame engaging racks on the second frame, a quadrant-arm for actuating said gear-wheels, and a race which controls the movement of said quadrant-arm, substantially as shown and described.
3. In oscillating-cylinder printing-machines for printing from the web, the combination with a quadrant-arm, of a race for controlling the movementof said quadrant-arm, said race being jointed and adjustable by the action of screwed spindles upon nuts on the race, to lengthen or shorten the path of the quadrant-arm controlled by the race, substantially as shown and described.
4. In oscillating-cylinder printing-machines for printing from the web, the combination with a quadrant-arm, of means for altering the direction of movement of the quadrantarm and ultimate direction of the feed consisting of levers con nccted to the pivoted portions of the race, rods connecting these levers together, a rod connecting one of the pivoted portions to a slotted quadrant and a second rod connected to said quadrant and carrying a roller operated by a cam, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
