Be it known that I, JOHN SMALLEY CAMP- BELL,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 11 Pall Mall, London, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dental Vulcanizers, of which the following is a specification.
Dental vulcanizers have heretofore been constructed with an opening at the front, giving admission to the vulcanizing-chamber for introducing orwithdrawing the dental molds, such opening being closed by a door, making a steam-tight joint therewith. Such form of dental vulcanizer is shown and described in the specification of my Letters Patent No. 217,728, dated July 22, 1879.
The object of my present invention is to improve the construction of vulcanizers of the class above mentioned, such improvement consisting in certain means for supporting, closing, and opening the door to the vulcanizing-chamber, for supporting the entire apparatus, and for providing drainage for the condensed steam which is formed in the vulcanizing-chamber.
In the accompanying two sheets of drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout, I show a mode for applying my invention in practice.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the entire apparatus through the line A A in Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan, and Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation through the line B Bin Fig. 3, of the supporting-base detached from the upper part.
In Figs. 1 and 2, O is the vulcanizing-chanr ber, surrounded on the bottom and sides, with the exception of the opening 0, by the steamjacket D. The chamber, with its surrounding jacket, is preferably circular in plan, while the face of the opening 0 is flat, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. At the center of the exterior of the top of the chamber is preferably located a circular projection E and at the center under the bottom is a similar projection E. These said projections constitute preferable forms of pivots, respectively, for two horizontal arms F F, which at their outer ends are rigidly connected by a bar or yoke G. The arms F F, with their connecting bar or yoke, constitute a preferred form of doorsupporting member, which by reason of the location of its pivots works exclusively in a horizontal path of movement. The said yoke G is drilled and tapped to receivea screw H,
which has pivoted to its inner end the door J, which closes the opening 0. A collar on the end of the screw 11 and a plate J, formed in halves and fixed to the door, permit the said screw to turn freely in the door and at the same time keep them securely connected. \Vhen it is desired to open the chamber, the screw II is turned till the door is drawn forward into the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, and the arms F F, yoke G, screw H, and door J can then be swung around into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, leaving the opening C perfectly clear for the insertion or removal of the molds. To close the chamber, the whole is swung back till the arm F abuts against the stop K, the door being then exactly opposite the opening 0, and the screw H is turned till the said door is securely fixed in place. The edge of the door abuts against a soft-metal ring let into an annular groove around the opening, making a fluid-tight joint. I
The supporting-base consists of a circular stand M, provided with feet and having three sockets P P P, which receive the ends of the screw-studs L, provided to close openings in the jacket D for removing the core after it is cast in manufacturing. A sheet-metal casing R is aflixed to the chamber and its supporting-base, thus connecting them securely together. In the front part of the said base and preferably formed in one therewith is a tray N, which receives any condensed steam or water escaping from the chamber C when the door is opened. Drainage from the said tray is provided by a pipe 0, to the nozzle of which a hose may be attached, if desired.
The centerof the projectionE is drilled and tapped to receive a screw for applying the necessary pressure to the molds, and the apparatus is supplied with a gage, thermometer, cocks, and other fittings usual in vulcanizers of this class, but which are not shown in the drawings, they being well understood and not forming any part of the present invention.
The main advantages of my invention cousist in the fact that the operator has never to handle the door, which necessarily becomes highly heated in use. The said door can never be misplaced. It is opened and closed by merely turning a single screw and always comes accurately into the correct position for closing. The base forms not only a convenient support, but a means of drainage, and the whole apparatus is rendered very compact and self contai'ned.
I Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a vulcanizer the combination of a Vulcanizing-chamber provided With an opening on one side thereof, a door-supportingmember pivotaliy secured near its opposite ends to the vuleanizer and havinga horizontal path of movement, a door carried by said member, and meansfor opening and closing the same, substantially for the purpose specified.
2. In a vulcanizer the combination of a vulcanizing-chamber provided with an opening on one side thereof, a door-supporting memher having a horizontal path of movement, a door carried by said member, means for actuating the door, and means for limiting the movement of said door-supporting member when the dooris in the correct position for closing, substantially for the purpose specified.
3. In a vulcanizer the combination of a vulcauizing-chamber provided with an opening on one side thereof, a door-supporting member having a horizontal path of movement,
' said member consisting of a pair of arms, one
pivoted to the top and the other to the bottom of said chamber, and a yoke connecting said arms, a door carried by said yoke, means for actuating the door, and a stop for limiting the movement of the door-supporting member, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a vulcanizer the combination with a chamber provided With an opening on one side thereof, a door-supporting member having a horizontal path of movement, and consisting of a pair of arms, one pivoted to the top and the other to the bottom of said chamber and a vertical yoke connecting said arms, a door carried by said yoke, and means for actuating said door.
5. In a vulcanizer the combination of a vulcanizing-chamber provided With an opening on one side thereof, a pair of arms and a vertical connecting-yoke constituting a door-supporting member, said arms being pivoted to the chamber one at the'top and the other at the bottom thereof, at the central vertical axis of the vulcanizer, and a door and means for actuating it carried by the yoke.
6. In a dental vulcanizer the combination of a vulcanizing-chamber With opening at the side, a supporting-base, and a drainage-tray on said base, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
7. In a dental vulcaniz'er the combination of a vulcanizing-chamber with opening at the side, a pivoted yoke carrying a door, a supporting-base with sockets, projections on said chamber engaging with said sockets, a drainage-tray and a duct leading from said tray, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
8. In a dental vulcanizer the combination of a vulcanizing-chamber, an opening thereto at the side, an arm pivoted to the top of said chamber, an arm pivoted to the bottom of said chamber, a yoke connecting said arms, a screw in said yoke, a door carried by said screw, an abutment for said arms, a supporting-base, a casing connecting said chamber and said base, and a drainage-tray on said base, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
