UNITE STATES ATENT ()FFICE.
NAPOLEON J. BEAUDIN AND NAPOLEON RQTHIBERT, OF'WVORCESTER,
SANITARY'SPITTOON.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 698,786, dated April 29, 1902. Application filed August 8, 1901. Serial No. 71,285. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
provide a simple, efficient, and inexpensive.
form of spittoon which comprises comparatively few parts arranged to insure an even spiral flow of water around the inner surface of its body portion.
To these ends this invention consists of the spittoon and of the combination of the parts therein as hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, partially broken away, of a spittoon constructed according to this invention;
and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. i
A spittoon constructed according to this invention comprises in its construction a floor plate or casting having an annular distributing-groove on its under side, a sheet-metal body portion which extends down from the floor plate or casting, and a water-supply pipe which is connected substantially tangentially with the distributing-groove. The cross-sectional area of the distributing-groove is pref erably less than that of the water-supply pipe and the outlet from the distributing-groove is preferably comparatively narrow, so that when water is turned on to the supply-pipe a considerable pressure will be maintained en--.-
tirely around the distributingroove, insuring an evenfiushing of all parts of the inner surface of the spittoon and a spiral flow of water therein. The sheet-metal body portion at its lower end is connected to a casting or fitting having a return bend or curve forming an ordinary trap connected to an outletpipe.
Referring to the accompanying drawings controlled by a single valve or plug.
and-in detail, a spittoon constructed according to this invention, as herein illustrated, comprises a floor plate or casting 10, which may be set into and secured in the floor F by screws 12. The floor plate or casting 10 is pro vided'with an annular ledge or shelf 11 for supporting a removable grating or cover 13. On its under side the floor plate or casting 10 is provided with an annular distributinggroove 14. Fitting onto the floor plate or casting l0 and brazed thereon or otherwise secured is a conical shect-metalbody portion 15, which is shaped to leave a narrow annular outletlfrom the distributing-groove 14. At its lower end the sheet-metal body portion 15 is threaded or otherwise secured in a casting or fitting 16, having a return-bend, which forms a trap and which is provided with the ordinary clean-outplug 17, extending down from which is the outlet-pipe 18. Opening into the annular distributing-groove, preferably substantially tangentially therewith, is a water-supply p'ipe19. Asillustratedmost clearlyin Fig. 1, the cross-sectional area of the water-supply pipe l i-s-preferably considerably greater than that of the distributing-groove 14, so that when a supply of water is turned on through the water-supply pipe 19 a substantially uniform pressure-will be maintained entirely around the distributinggroove 14 and a spiral flow of water will be produced around the entire inside body portion of the spittoon. By means of this construction the spittoon may be flushed out at as frequent intervals as may be required, and where several spittoons are employed they may be connected to a common source of water-supply y means of this construction also by maintaining a slight flow of water through the supplypipe 19 a comparativelysmallamount of water may be made to maintain a constant spiral flow around the entire inner face of the spittoOn-that is to say, in a spittoon constructed according to our'invention by providing for a discharge of water from a distributing groove formed in the floor-plate itself we have provided a construction in which absolutely the whole inner surface of the bowl is flowed over and flushed by the discharge of water, whereas if it were attempted to form the distributing-groove in the bowl itself as, for example, in the construction of ordinary closet-boWls--that portion of the bowl above the discharge-opening for the water would not be washed or flushed out,and hence would form a lodging-place in which refuse and filth would collect, no such lodging place for the collection of filth being possible in spittoons constructed accordingto our invention, the passage of water from a distributing-groove in the floor-plate itself flushing the bowl to its very top.
\Ve are aware that numerous changes may be made in the construction of our spittoon by those who are skilled in the art without departing from the scope of our invention as expressed in the claims. We do not wish, therefore, to be limited to the construction we have herein shown and described; but
Vthat we do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1'. As an article of manufacture, a spittoon comprising a floor-plate having an annular distributing-groove on its under side, a waterpipe connected substantially tangentially to "the distributing-groove, and a sheet-metal body portion secured to the floor-plate so as to leave a narrow discharge-opening between the sheet-metal body portion and the inner edge of the distrihitting-groove, whereby a spiral discharge of water will be secured over the entire inner surface of the body portion from its upper edge downward.
2. As an article of manufacture, a spittoon comprising a floor-plate adapted to be set into and secured by screws 12 in place in a floor, and having a supporting-ledge 11 for detachably receiving a grating 13, and having on its under side an annular distributinggroove, a supply-pipe 19 connected to the distributing-groove, and a sheet-metal body portion secured to the floor-plate so as to leave a narrow discharge-opening between the body portion and the inner edge of the distributing-groove, so that the entire inner surface of the body portion from its upper edge down will be flushed by the discharge of water from the distributing-groove, and a fitting 16 connected with the lower end of the body portion, and having a return-bend formiug a trap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we havehereunto set ourhands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
