To a, whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that 1, CHARLES LEWIS'MAY1 HEW, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New'York, have invented a new and useful Gear-Hanger for Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to motor vehicles; and it has for its object to provide a hanger for the transmission gearing whereby the driving-sprocket that is rotated from the motor will be held a fixed distance from the driven sprocket on the driving-axle of the vehicle in whatever position the body of the vehicle carrying the motor may be, this hanger being provided also with the brake and the chain-tightening mechanism.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description.
In the drawings forining a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation showing the motor and its shaft with the hanger snspended from bearings concentric with the motor shaft, the hanger carrying the transmissiongearing, with the brakes, clutch mechanism, and accompanying parts. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing a portion of themotor, the drive shaft, and the gearing therebetween.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation looking from the opposite side to that shown in Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a motor, including a casing 5, which is to be mounted in the body of the motorvehicle, and from the casin g projects the ends of the motor-shaft 6, which lies in a horizontal plane. Concentric with the motor-shaft 6 and projecting from the casing 5 of the motor are cylindrical lugs 7, and engaged with these lugs are the arms 8 and 9 of the gearhanger, said arms having bearing-openings in their upper ends which receive the lugs, so that the arms may swing freely upon the lugs as pivots. The arm 8 is somewhat longer than the arm 9,"and from a point substantially midway of'its ends there "projects laterally a connecting-web 1.0,"which connects arm 8 with the lower end of the arm 9, the web being continued also beyond arm 9 and having attached thereto by means of bolts 11 a hanger-arm 12,-
the several arms 8, 9, and 12 standing in the same verticalplane and the arms 8 and 12 being separated to a greater extent than the arms 8 and 9.'
At the lower ends of the arms 8 and 12 are cylindrical enlargements 13 and 14 in axial alinement,and these cylindrical enlargements have corresponding openings therein to receive bearing-bushings 15, in which is journaled the drive-shaft 16', which lies parallel with the horizontal motor-shaft 6.
From the cylindrical enlargements 13 and 14 project laterally supports 18 and 19, the supports 18 being to one side and the supports 19 to the other side of the drive-shaft, and in the ends of the corresponding supports are openings in which are received the bars 20 and 21, which lie parallel with. the drive-shaft. 7
At one end of the drive-shaft 16 and beyond the arm 8 is fixed a gear-Wheel 22, and meshing therewith is a pinion 23 on a stubshaft 24 on the outer face of the arm 8, this pinion meshing in turn with the gear 25, fixed on the motor-shaft. If desired, this intermediate pinion may of course be omitted.
Onthe drive-shaft 16 is loosely mounted a sleeve 27, which carries the drive-sprocket 28, the brake- drums 29 and 30, and the clutchwheel 31, while slidably disposed upon the shaft 16 and rotatable therewith is a clutch member 32 for engagement with the clutchwheel to clutch the sleeve to rotate with the drive-shaft, this clutch mechanism being of any suitable construction. Engaged with the brake-drums are the brake- bands 33 and 34, each of which is attached at one end to the rod or bar 20, while the opposite ends are connected to blocks pivotally mounted'on the bar in the usual manner and adapted for oscillation through the medium of the levers 35 in the usual manner, these levers of coursebeing connected with operating mechanism in the body of the vehicle.
Engaged with the sprocket 28 is a chain 36 for engagement With the drive-sprocket on the drive-axle of the vehicle, and the chaintightener for this chain may consist of a coupling 42, in whicha're engaged the rods 40 and 41. By shifting this coupling 42 the tension of the chain is varied, and in order to hold the drive-shaft in constant relation IOU to the drive-axle of the vehicle spacing-bars are provided, each consisting of a member l0, pivoted to an arm of the hanger, and a second member 41, having a strap for pivotal connection with the drive-axle, the adjacent ends of the sections being connected by a coupling 42 for adjusting the sections to lengthen or shorten the rods.
With this construction it will be seen that as the body of the vehicle moves up and down and the motor moves with it the hanger has a pivotal movement with respect to the motorshaft; but the spacing of the motor-shaft and drive-shaft does not change, and the spacing of the drive-shaft from the drive-axle also remains constant.
In practice modifications of the details of structure may be made and any suitable ma terials and proportions may be used for the various parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It will be noted that with this construction connter-shafting and other mechanism ordinarily required are dispensed with.
hat is claimed is- 1. The combination with a motor and its casing, of the motor-shaft, bearings carried by the motor-casing concentric with the shaft, a hanger including spaced arms swingingly mounted upon the bearings, a drive-shaft mounted in the hanger and operatively connected with the motor-shaft, a driving member upon the drive-shaft, and means connected With the hanger for holding the powershaft in constant spaced relation with an axle to be driven.
2. The combination with a motor and its shaft, of a hanger swingingly mounted concentric With the shaft, a drive-shaft mounted in the hanger and having a drive member, a brake-drum connected with the drive member, projections upon the hanger extending beyond the brake-drum, and brake mechanism mounted in the projections in operative relation to the drum.
3. The combination with a motor and its shaft, of a hanger mounted concentric with the shaft for swinging movement, a driveshaft mounted in the hanger and operatively connected with the motor shaft, a drivesprocket mounted upon the drive shaft, clutch mechanism for throwing the sprocket into and out of operative relation to the driveshaft, a chain engaged with the sprocket, a chain-tightener carried by the hanger in operative relation to the chain, brake mechanism for the sprocket carried by the hanger, and means connected with the hanger for holding the drive-shaft in spaced relation to an axle to be driven.

The combination with a motor and its shaft, of a hanger comprising spaced vertical arms 8 and 9 each having forwardly and rear- Wardly extending arms 18 and 19, of a driveshaft 16 mounted in the hanger and operatively connected to the motor-shaft, a driving-sprocket 28 mounted on the drive-shaft, a clutch-disk 31 loosely mounted on the driveshaft, a sliding clutch carried by said shaft and adapted to engage with the disk, brakedrums carried by the drive-shaft, band-brakes encircling the same and having one end fixedly secured to a portion of the hanger-frame, and adjustable spacing-bars connecting the hanger-frame to the driving-axle of the vehicle, substantially as specified.
