UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
PETER POOLEY, OFl CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
REVOLVlNG BROILER.
SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 694,889, dated March 4, 1902. Application led April 5, 1901. Serial llo'. 54.560. (-No model.)
To @ZZ wir/omit may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER POOLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revolving Broilers, of which the following is a specioation.
This invention relates to broilers for vegetables and meats; and Vits principal objects are to provide a device for this purpose that will enable the article being broiled to be couveniently and readily revolved over the fire;-.
that will economize theY heating area by enabling a plurality of articles to be broiled in close proximity and all rotated in unison by convenient means. I
Other objects will he more fully pointed out hereinafter.
It consists in combining with a suitable iirebox and its surrounding casing and appurtenances suitable means for supporting the articles to be cooked and means for revolving all of the articles by turning one shaft and such other details and features as will be described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a detail showing hollow spindle. is a detail of spindle with shank for turningcrank. Fig. 6 is a view showing holder. Fig. 7 is a View showing removable cover for re-box. Fig. S. is a View of handle for removing re-boxes. Fig. 9 isa sectional elevation taken at the right of shaft kin Fig. 2 and looking in 'the direction of said shaft,
A is a casing or body of a stove having the removable ireboxes u, a. mounted in the Beneath the fire-boxes are slanting stationary slides a2 0.3, upon which the ashes fall and pass into a removable drawer B. At either side of the stove and immediately below the fire-boxes are openings c c', covered by slides C C', which furnish easy access to start the fire and enables a pusher to be introduced to shove the ashes into the drawer in case they do not pass readily down. The front and side portions of the casing form convenient storage-room for the fuel and cooking utensils and is rendered accessible by doors D.
A row of apertures e at the front of the cas- Fig. 5
ing furnishes means for the ingress of air and may be closed or regulated bya slide E. The air thus admitted to the casing passes upward through holes e2 in the top plate, thus furnishing a draft to carry away the heat and odor. Doors a4 in the top plate may be turned up, as shown in Fig. 3, to protect the operator. A hood G over thevstove may be connected with a chimney (notshown) by a pipe g. The lower part g of the back plate of the hood G is hinged to allow access to the broiler from the rear.
The broiler apparatus comprises an upright plate H, in which are supported the spits .7i and gridiron-supports it. These have Shanks extending baci: through their bearings in the plate H to engage with intermeshing gearwheels t'. One of these shanks,'as shown in Fig. 5, is still further extended to engage with a cranky', by means of which the whole system is turned. The plate H is hinged to the top plate of the stove to allow the spits and gridirons to be turned up and away from the lire, as in Fig. 3. In case it is desired to operate the mechanism from the front a crankshaft k is passed through bearing-posts-lc and engages one of the gridiron-supports h.
A hollow spit h2 is adapted for use in case a large portion of meat ora fowl is to be broiled. The spit canbe inserted in the article to he hroiled and then slipped inposition on one of the supports h'. These spits are preferably made of square tubing to engage the square supports It and are provided with sharpened points, as shown in Fig. 4. Gridirons or toasters L, (shown in Figs. 6 and 9,) provided with the usual wire cover, adapted to be held in a closed position by a hook when the bread or meat has been inserted, are mounted on hollow square shafts adapted to engage the supports h. These gridirons may be slipped into position on the supports or removed therefrom while they are turning over the fire, and
in order to do so readily they-are provided lgreatly economized, thereby reducing the amount of grate-surface needed, and consequently the fuel.
In operation the lire is started, with a cover IOC) m (shown in Fig. 7) over the fire-box, and as soon as the fuel, which is preferably charcoal, is burning sufliciently the cover removed and the vegetables or meats placed in position and turned bythe Crank, as shown. If ihe cooking is completed before the fire is outor itis desired to remove the fire, a pronged lifter n, Fig. 8, is adapted to engage with theend plates of the lire-boxes and furnish means for removing,r them.K
Various modifications may be made in the application of my invention, and I do not limit myself to the exact construction or detail shown; but
NVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of a casing provided with a draft-inlet in the front thereof and with outlets vin its top plate, fire-boxes mount'
