' TROLLEY HARP AND WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 692,851, dated February 1 1, 1902.
Application led October 29, 1901. Serial No. 80,434. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it knownY that I, WILLIAM A. HELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing atMus'- kegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley Harps and Wheels; and I do hereby declare thefollow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to -which it appertains to4 this wheel 1 is preferably provided with a j make and use the same.
My invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention,
and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims. p
Figure 1 represents a top plan 'view of my improved trolley harp and wheel. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section taken on line 2 2, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my device.
Fig. 4 is a plan and sectional view of the brush.
rIhe object of my invention is to provide an improved trolley harp and wheel adapted for use upon high-speed roads, whereby the said harp and wheel are less apt to leave the wire and the current is more effectively collected' from the trolley-wheel and conveyed to` the pole. f
In carrying out the above Vobjects I east a trolley-harp A with the usual rope-attaching ear 3, an internally-serew-threaded shank or stock B, and a wheel-carryingportion in the form of a triangle with angular portions 4 thereofextending upward in the direction of the wire, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The triangular portion above vmentioned is provided with a suitable opening for a grooved trolleywheel l, which is mounted on ashaft 5 in the lower part thereof.
The inner faces 1l 1l of the angular portions 4 on each side of the trolley-wheel are curved inward from front to back, as shown in Fig. 1, for permitting the trolley-wheel to properly follow the wire around curves and switches and are inclined inward from the top of the harp to a point adjacent to the uppermost part of the periphery of the wheel l 1 for centering the wire nupon the same.
said reservoir.
The,
harp is further provided on the insidewith recesses 8 8, adjacent tothe shaft 5,'adapted l reservoir 13 'and a removablebushing 6, having openings 12 therein communicating with The hub of said wheel on both sides thereof is formed with concave portions 9 9, adapted to conform to the configu-y ration of the brushes 7 7. The periphery of shallow groove 2, the wire beingkept inthe same by means of the inclined faces'll 11 of' the harp.
The brushes 7 7 are made of spring brass or copper and' are'substantially of the form shown in Fig. 4, having an opening 10,tl1rough which the shaft 5 of the trolley-wheel passes.
When the parts are assembled, it will be observed that the brushes 7 7 will lie in the recesses 8 8 in the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, and the curved central portion of the said brushes will engage the concave portions of the hub of the wheel. Thus the brushes provide for a frictional contact b etween the wheel and the harp.
It will be noted that the' inner faces 11 ,1l of the angular portions 4 4 of the harp approach each other most nearly at points above the axis of the trolley'- wheelV and Arecede from each other, both forward and in rear of said points, thus'facilitating the passage of the trolley-wheel around curves and over switches.'
W'hat I claim, and ters Patent,v isl 1. The combination witha trolley-harp provided with upwardly-extending angular portions, the inner faces ofsaid portions approaching each other most nearly at points directly above the axis of the trolley-wheel and receding from each other forward and in rear of said points to facilitate rounding curves, and artrolley-wheel mounted in' said harp, substantially as described. f
2. The combination witha trolley-harp provided with upwardly-extending angular portions, the inner faces ,of said portions approaching each other most nearly at points directly above the'axis of the trolley-wheel and receding from each other forward and in rear desire to secure by Let- ICQ of said points to facilitate rounding curves, said faces being also inclined upwardly and outwardly and a trolleywheel ,mounted in said harp below said faces, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a trolley-harp having recesses in the inner lateral faces thereof,
of a trolley-wheel mounted in said harp and provided with a hub having concave lateral faces and brushes located in said recesses and engaging said concave portions of said hub, substantially as described.
4E. The combination with atrolley-harp having its inner faces provided with recesses, of a shaft mounted in the side portions of said harp and passing through said recesses, a trolley-wheel mounted on said shaft and provided with a hub having concave lateral faces and brushes having an opening therethrough :lor receiving said shaft and being adapted to rest in said recesses and engage the concave latA eral faces of said hub, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
