The portions of the wires next the down-turned ends aro embedded in strips, C, of cloth or felt, which, just previous to its application, is saturated in white leed or other suitable substance. Over the strips O I place plates I), prefer'- ably of sheet metal, which plates I secure by nails or screws d driven through the strips and into the substance ofthe rail. The groeve a is then filled with cement or putty E. The sides ofthe wire webbing are secured by wires F rove through the two outermost spirals, and made fast to the sido rails G lby means of staples II. A. singie weh may he employed, as in the illustration, or several webs may be lapplied one over another. India rubber or other suitable material may be used in place ofthe cloth or felt O.
