'WHIFFLETREE-HQYOK. I
SPECEFIGATION forming p'art of Letters Patent No. 689,734, dated December 24:, 1901.
Application filed July 18, 1901.
and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletree- Hooks; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.
The invention relates to whiflietrce-hooks.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive hook which will reduce to a minimum the liability of the trace-ring becoming accidentally disengaged therefrom and which will overcome the serious objections .to hooks which project some distance away from the end of the whiffietree.
Vith this and other objects in view the invention consists of'certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim. j q
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view taken from the rear of one end of the whiffietree, illustrating the applicationof our invention. Fig. 2 is an end view, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectionalview, to illustrate the curved rear wall.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a sleeve, which may be of any length desired and which is adapted to be slipped .upon and secured in any suitable manner to the end of the 'whif fietree. The outer end of this sleeve is pro- Serial No. 68,771. (No model.) I V rearwardly, so as to have its convex surface engage/the concave surface of the recess. It is slipped under the tongue and then swung around on the outer end of the sleeve and placing the ring upon the hook it is turned cess,'when it may be easily removed. Should 1 it slip or cant downwardly, it will be pre vented from falling off the end of the hook by reason of the guardtongue. This tongue also serves to afford means for guiding the trace-ringin operative position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of our invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, anddetails of construction maybe made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof. v
Having thus described our invention, what We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A whiffietree-hook consisting of a body portion having a shoulder-at one end and having a curved recess at its-rear side, and a tongue extending inwardly from the outer end of the body portion immediately at the rear of the curved recess, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our handsin presence of two subscribing wit= nesses. 1
