To all whom, t may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES L. HEISLER, a citizen' ofthe United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Road-Rollers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in road-rollers; and it consists in certain improvements which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows:
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the machine; Fig. 2, a plan View; Fig. 3, a rear end view. Fig. 4 shows a section of the steam steering apparatus, and Fig. 5 an end view of the same. l
The main frame-4 of the machine consists ot' a plate or system of plates at each side of the machine, which are brought together at the front of the machine, forming a gooseneck 3. A bearing 2 isformed in this gooseneck, and in this bearing is arranged a horizontal king-bolt 1. The king-bolt extends into a yoke 5 andis connected with said yoke by a joint, so as to permit the steering of the machine. The yoke has the axle 9 extending through it, on which is journaled the front roller 6 of the machine. vThe peculiar yoke connection and king-,bolt herein shown are not claimed in this invention, forming a part of a separate application, Serial No. 706,711.
Arranged at each side of theyoke are lugs 10, in which is journaled a iloating lever 8. The rear end of the floating lever is connected by means of the joints 11 to the beam 7. The beam 7 is pivoted at itsv center, so as to allow it to swing in either direction.- It will be noted that as the beam 7 is swung the frontv .roller is swung by means of the connection formed by the iloating levers 8. Secured to the under side of the frame is a steam-cylinder, in which operates a piston 12. A valve 13 controls this piston and is connected with alever 15. The lever 15 extends upwardly and engages a pin 18 on the piston-rod, it being slotted to allow an up-and-down movement on said piston. A lever 17, pivoted on the frame, is also pivoted on the lever 15 and by the action of the piston.

Connected with the lever 15 is a link 16, which is connected with a hand-lever-l/l. The piston-rod is connected by a jointed lever with the beam 7, so that the beam 7 is swung The action of this device is as follows; When the hand-lever is moved, it moves the valve and cuts off vthe steam from one end of the cylinder and turns it onto the other end of the cylinder, and so moves the piston. As the piston moves it operates with the link 16 as afulcrum upon the lever l5 and returns the valve to its original position. When the valve arrives at normal, it admits steamat both sides of the cylinder and locks the piston in position. Any movement of the piston in either direction immediately opens the valve, so as to bring the piston back to its original position. I do not claim, broadly, in this application this systemof valve mechanism.
The plates forming the front part of the frame are provided with a top and bottom and a ring-plate, in which the boiler 27 is placed. The construction of the frame described thus forms a water-tank for the machine.
It will be noted that the frame 4 is above the axle and that the boiler and re-box are of what is known as the upright type and extend below the frame. The tire-box is fed through an opening 29. It will be noted that this arrangement of boiler and frame permitsy the boiler to be set as low as practical, so as to bring the center of gravity of the whole machine as low as possible. This gives the machine greater stability than where the boiler is set higher. At the same time the arrangement of the frame as high as shown permits the roller to be run immediately adjacent to the curb, which is particularly desirable with this roller, as one of its principal functions is to roll pavements, such as asphalt. It will also be noted that the use of the vertical boiler permits a swing of the beam 7 along the sides of the boiler, so that the machine may be more closely coupled up than would ,be the case if a horizontal boiler were used. It also permits of an arrangement of IOC to be attached to the beam near its center.
` For this reason a smaller cylinder may be used with an upright boiler than with other types.
The frame 4 extends to the rear of the tank, and the ends of the frame-plates are connected by a cross-piece 2l. The "lower part of the frame is arranged in axle 20, on which is Varranged the rear roll., This rear roll may be between the plates forming the frame, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or may be arranged on an extended axle, as shown in Fig. 3. The roll in Figs. 1 and 2 is indicated by the mark 25 and in Fig. 3 by the mark 28. In either case the function is substantially the same; but I prefer the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, as its peculiar shape of" frame permits of the housing of the roll in a very short machine. n
The engines 19 are arranged on the crosspiece 21, with the rear ends of the cylinder away from the boiler. The engines are preferably of the double-cylinder type, and the eccentrics 30 are arranged between the engines and are thus protected. The engines connect with the drive-shaft 24, and this is connected to a system of gearing with the gear 23, which is fixed on the axle 22. This gear is arranged at the opposite side of the machine from that on which the engine is placed and is inclosed by the extensions of the frame 4. The engines are connected with the boiler by the ordinary steam-pipe and areprovided with the ordinary accessories for operation of the engine and boiler.
What I claim is- 1. In a road-roller, the combination of a frame, comprising two main side pieces arranged in the form of a gooseneck at the front end, and having the extended rear plates, a connection 2l for the rear end of the sides of the frame, the front and rear rollers supporting the frame, a water-tank arranged in the gooseneck and comprising appart of the frame within its walls, an engine arranged' on ,the cross-piece 21, a gearing connected in said engine withthe rear roll, and an upright boiler arranged between the side pieces and between the rolls..` 4 l 2. In a road-roller, the combination of the frame, theboiler mounted on said frame, front and rear rollers for supporting said frame, a horizontal engine mounted on said frame to the rear of said boiler with the end of the cyl-v inder opposite the engine-cranks away from the boiler. g
3. In a road-roller, the combination with a frame, a front roller arranged to swing on said frame, a beam 7 pivoted on said frame, links for transmitting the motion of the beam -to the roller, a cylinder, a piston arranged to operate in said cylinder, connections between said piston, and said beam, and a Valve de- Vice for controlling said piston.
4. In a road-roller, the combination with a frame, a front` roller arranged to swing on said frame, a beam 7 pivoted on said frame, links for transmitting the motion of the beam to the roller, a cylinder, an upright boiler suspended in said frame immediately to the rear of said beam, a piston arranged to operate in said cylinder, connections between said piston and said beam, and a valve device for controlling said piston.
