f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
DEMUS B. GOOD, OF FOSTORIA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDMOND BOLLINGER, OF FOSTORIA, OHIO.
MgERRY-"Go-ROUND- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,180, dated December 17, 1901.
Appnmion sled Much '7, 1901'.
To a/-ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, DEMUS B. GOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fostoria, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio,
have invented a new and useful Merry-Gd Round, of which the following is a specification. Y
This invention relates to merry-go-rou nds and it has for its object to provide a cheap 1o and durable structure which may be used in all kinds of Weather with comfort to the patrons, a further object of the invention being to provide a construction which may be readily disjointed and packed for transportation,
x 5 additional objects and advantages ofthe invention being,r apparent from the following description.
In the drawings forming a portion of this l specification, and in which like numerals of zo reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation showing the complete apparatus. Fig. 2-is a vertical cen- .tral section through the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a section taken horizontally through the z5 mast just above the cars, some of the cars and portions of the platform being Vremoved to'better illustrate the construction. Fig. 4f is a sectional view of the bearings of one of the supporting-wheels, the wheel being shown 3o in elevation.
Referring now to the drawings, 5 represents a central vertical mast, which is removably stepped in a block 6, and encircling the mast and disposed concentric therewith is a track 7 upon a suitable supporting-base S. A platform is provided for rotation upon the track and comprises a framework including inner timbers 9, which in the present instance are disposed to outline a hexagon, and to each 4o of these timbers are secured a plurality of outwardly-diverging beams 10, which are connected adjacent to their outer ends by braces 11. Each timber 9, with its connected beams, forms a truncated-sector-shaped section of the annular framework of the plat form, and when the several sections of the framework are assembled the outer beams 10 of the several sections lie in mutual contact and are bolted together to form a rigid 5o framework;v On theendsoftheseveralbeams are secured sections 12 of a circular base, upon Serial No. 50.224. (No model.)
which is mounted a gear 13, which may be formed of sections of wood or metal bolted or otherwise attached to the base, this gear being adapted for engagement of adriving-gear to rotate the platform, as will be hereinafter set forth. Each section of the platformframe is provided with a transverse blocklt, having depending ears 15, in which are disposed ball-bearings 16 for the trunnions of a supporting-wheel 17, disposed to run upon the track 7 as the frame is rotated, and to hold the frame so that its wheels will not be displaced from the track a collar 18 is loosely engaged with the mast for rotation thereon and has eyes with which are engaged hooks 19, engaged also with eyes upon the timbers 9. This construction permits of rotation of the platform, while maintaining a constant relation to the track.
The platform proper consists of sectorshaped or truncated-sector-shaped sections 19, which are disposed edge to edge and cover the platform-'frame so as to project over the gear at the periphery thereof.
Upon the platform are disposed housings or cars 20, having windows at both their inner and outer sides and which cars are disposed end to end in hexagonal form and have doors 2l, opening into the interspaces between the ends of the cars,`the roofs of the cars being continued to cover these interspaces. A second collar 22 is rotatably disposed upon the mast 5 y and has eyes with which are Aengaged hooks at the ends of tierods 23, which extend outwardly and downwardly and are engaged with the cars adjacent to the ends thereof, so as to preventdisplacement of the cars radially of the platguy-ropes 26 or irons having hooks 27 are engaged with eyes in a ring 28 at the top of the mast and may be anchored at their lower ends.
When the platform is to be rotated from IOO the peripheral gear, a d ri ving-gear is engaged therewith, and in order that the platform may be rotated, it' preferred, by a cable a cable-d rum 30 is securedv to the under sides of the beams l() and is grooved, as shown, to receive a cable.
Adjacent to the outer lines of windows of the several cars or housings are disposed benches 3l for older passengers, while adjacent to the in ner windows are disposed hobbyhorses for the younger passengers, and as these benches and horses are inclosed they may be used and the apparatus operated in all conditions of weather.
What is claimed is- 1. A knockdown merry-go-round comprising a central mast, an annular track disposed concentric with the mast, a platform having supporting-wheels disposed upon the track, a collar rotatably mounted upon the mast and provided with eyes, and hooks attached to the platform for engagement with the eyes to hold the platform i'rom displacement of its wheels from the track.
2. A knockdown merry-go-round comprising a mast, an annular track disposed concentric withthe mast, aseparable platform having l--.|xppcrting-wheels disposed to run upon the track, said platformcomprisingsector-shaped sections, each section comprising converging beams and connecting end pieces, the outside beams bei ngdisposed oneagainst another and having bolts engaged through them to hold the sections removably together, a collar rotatablydisposed upon the mast, removable connections between the collar and platformv to hold the latter from displacement 0f its wheels from the track, removable housings upon the platform, a second collar rotatably disposed upon the mast and removable connections between the housings and the second collar to hold the housings from displacement from thevplatform.
3. A knockdown merry-go-round comprising a mast, an annular track disposed concentric with the mast, a separable platform having supporting-wheels disposed upon the track, removable housings disposed upon the platform, connections between the platform and mast for holding the platform from displacement of its wheels from the track, removable 'connections between the housings and connections between the housings and mast to hold the housings from displacement from the platform.
4. A knockdown merry-go-round comprising a central mast, a track, a platform-frame including sector-shaped sections each comprising converging beams and connecting end pieces, the outside beams being disposed one against another and having bolts engaged through them to hold the sections removably together, removable connections between the sections and the mast to hold the frame in constant relation to the mast, supportingwheels for the frame disposed upon the track, removable housings upon the frame, a collar rotatable upon the mastand having eyes and hooks attached to the housings for engagement with the eyes for` holding the housings against displacement from the frame. t
5. A knockdown merry-go-round comprising a rotatable platform comprising separable sections having supporting-wheels, a track for the wheels, housings disposed removably upon the platform and having beveled ends disposed one against another and provided with eyes, hooks removably engaged with the eyes, anda central mast having removable connections with the platform and the housings.
AIn testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
