SUCTlON-PLATE FOR ClGAR-WRAPPER-CUTTING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,677, dated November 26, 1901.
Application filed August 3, 1901. Serial No. 70,305- (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, NAPOLEON DU BRUL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Suction-Plate for Cigar-Wrapper- Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of the suction-plate forming part of a cigar-Wrapper-cuttin g platen or table. I have heretofore constructed these suction-plates with a series of openings grouped within an area corresponding substantially to the wrapper to be cut from the tobacco-leaf and leaving an uninterrupted cutting path surrounding the group of perforations and also with a series of perforations outside of the cuttinglpath and substantially conforming thereto, so that the portion of the leaf forming the Wrapper is held in place until rolled upon the cigarbunch and the portion of the leaf forming the Waste is prevented from ruffling up during the cutting operation and until removed by the operator, while the whole leaf is held more securely While cutting.
The object of my present invention is to so construct these plates that when the tobaccoleaf is laid thereon and subjected to the suction the leaf will be drawn down over a shoulder or into a groove or depression all around the cutting-path in such a manner as to indicate to the operator the portion of the leaf that will be taken out to form the Wrapper, and thus enable him to judge beforehand how to place the leaf to secure the most economical results or get the most wrappers out of a given leaf,
My invention will be fully understood upon reference to the accompanying drawings, in Which-- Figures l and 2 are respectively a plan and a transverse section of a perforated suction-plate, illustratingone embodiment of my invention, Fig. 2 being a section on the line AA of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is an additional section on the line B B of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section corresponding to Fig. 2, showing a slight modification in the form of the groove embodied in Fig. l. Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively a plan and a vertical sec=i tion on line C C, Fig. 5 illustrating another embodiment of the fundamental principle of my invention. 1
Referring to Figs. l to 4, inclusive,` l represents a suction-plate of a cutting platen or table formed with a group of air-suction perforations 2, arranged within an area conforming to the cigar-wrapper to be cut and surrounded by an uninterrupted cuttingpath 6o 3, on the outer side of which and conforming thereto are a series of perforations 4. The object of my present invention being to cause a depression or drawing downof the tobacco-v leaf to result from the suction through the perforations 4, I form the plate along thel line of these perforations or in close prox'- imity thereto or in proximity to some eqluiva-f lent airsuction passage or passages through the plate with a depression or groove or drop 76 in the level of the plate, so that when airsuction is communicated beneath the leaf the latter will be drawn down over the shoulder or edge formed by the grooved depression g or drop in the level of the plate and will indicate clearly to the operator just what portion of the leaf will be removed by cutting out the wrapper when the leaf is in that position, so that the operator may judge at once Whether he is applying the leaf in position to 86 enable him to cut therefrom the greatest possible number of wrappers. This feature is obviously of great importance, because it insures the economy in material used Without materially retarding the operator. If the leaf is not in exactly the right position, he may shut off the air-suction' momentarily and shift the leaf slightly, so as to get it just Where it is desired.
According to Figs. 1,2, 3, and 4 my invenoo tion is carried out by forming a groove which connects the perforations 4, this groove being represented at 5 in Figs. 2 and 3 as of semicircular form and at 5a in Fig. 4 as of angular form. In either case the depression or drop is provided, which leaves an edge or shoulder just outside of and conforming to the cuttingpath, and when the leaf is drawn down over the edge or shoulder the purposes of my invention are fully accomplished.
According to Figs. 5 and 6 the depression or drop is provided by having a raised or elevatedlsuction-plate la, through which the perforations 2 are extended, such plate 1a be-V IOO ing proportioned so as to provide the cuttingpath 3, but to terminate just Within the series of outer perforations 4, and thus provide the shoulder or edge, or, in other Words, to leave the depression beyond the cutting-path,which will indicate the position of the wrapper in the leaf as soon as air-suction is applied. 5b indicates this drop or depression formed by the raised or elevated plate in Figs. 5 and 6.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In combination With a suction-plate for cigar-Wrapper-cutting machines having an uninterrupted cutting-path overwhichaknife may travel to cut a Wrapper from a leaf laid l thereon; an air-suction means outside of said cutting-path, and a drop or depression in connection therewith conforming in outline to the cutting-path, and into which the leaf is drawn by the air-suction to indicate the outline of the Wrapper in the leaf.
2. A suction-plate for cigar-wrapper-cuteene?? ting machines having a cutting-path to rel ceive a knife for cutting out the Wrapper and a drop or depression in the surface conforming to said cutting-path and indicating the outline of the Wrapper in the leaf.
3. In a cigar-wrapper-cutting machine, a cutting-platen having a path conforming to the wrapper to be out, upon which a knife may travel to cut the Wrapper, means for communicating air-suction to the leaf outside of said cutting-path and with a portion of the platen conforming in outline to the cutting-path, raised above the adjacent portion of said platen whereby a drop or depression is provided to indicate the outline of the Wrapperin the leaf.
The foregoing specification signed this 26th day of July, 1901.
NAPOLEON DU BRL.
