ADJUSTABLE FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,675, dated November 26, 1901.
. Application filed January 2,1901. Serial No. 41,924. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. COGGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Furniture, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view showing the clamping and adjusting mechanism. Fig. 2 is a sectional View on line A A, Fig. 1.
Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details hereinafter referred to.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable furniture; and the object of my invention is to provide a readily-accessible means of adjusting articles of furniture.
One feature of my invention is the means adopted for securing the pinion to the shaft. The hollow shaft upon which is mounted the pinion is formed with a keyway, and the pinion is formed with keys or lugs which engage in these keyways.
Another feature of my invention lies in the means adopted to turn the shaft upon which the pinion is mounted. The washer which lies between the clamping-nut and the standard is polygonal in outline and is secured to the adjustingshaft by means of keys formed on the inside of the washer engaging in keyways formed on the shaft. The washer being on the outside of the standard is readily accessible to be engaged by a wrench, and when the washer is turned the shaft turns with it to operate the adjusting mechanism.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of my invention and the best mode now known to me of applying that principle, a represents the supporting-standards,which are secured to the floor, and b the bracket members, secured to the article of furniture. (Not shown.) J ournaled in the standards a. is a hollow shaft 0, formed with keyways d, in which engage the lugs e, which are formed on the inside of the pinions f. (See Fig. 5.) The pinions f engage toothed racks 9, (see Fig. 2,)forrned on the brackets 12, so that by the rotation of the shaft 0 the brackets b are raised or lowered. To rotate the shaft 0, I provide the washers 7L with lugs i, which engage the keyways d on the shaft 0, and make the washers polygonal in outline, so that they may be readily engaged by a wrench. (See Figs. 3 and 4:.) Extending through the shaft 0 is a bolt 7', screwed on the ends of which are the nuts 7r. When the nuts are screwed up tight, the stress tending to force the standards together is taken up by the shaft c, which acts as an abutment between the standards (1. Again, when the nuts it are screwed up any wear between the rubbing surfaces is taken up.
What I claim i s- 1. In adjustable furniture, the combination of an adjusting-shaft with means for the rotation of said shaft; said means comprising a washer having its surface constructed to en'- gage a wrench and secured to said shaft by a key on the one engaging akeyway in the other.
2. In adjustable furniture, the combination of an adjusting-shaft with means for the rotation of said shaft; said means comprising a washer polygonal in outline and secured to said shaft by a key on the one engaging a keyway in the other.
3. In adjustable furniture, the combination of an adjusting shaft; a pinion secured to said shaft by a key on the one engaging akeyway in the other; and means to rotate said shaft; said means comprising a washer secured to said shaft by a key on the one engaging a key way in the other, and having its surface constructed to engage a wrench.
4. In adjustable furniture, the combination of supporting-standards; a shaft journaled in said standards; clamping means; and washers interposed between said clamping means and said standards; said washers being secured to said shaft by a spline-and-groove connection and thereby adapted to rotate said shaft.
5. In adjustable furniture, the combination of supporting standards; a hollow shaft journaled in said standards; a bolt extending through said shaft; nuts on the ends of said bolt; and washers interposed between said nuts and said standards; said washers being secured to said shaft by a spline-and-groove connection and thereby adapted to rotate said shaft.
6. In adjustable furniture, the combination of supporting-standards a shaft journaled in said standards; pinions secured on said shaft by a spline and-groove connection; the spline on the pinion abutting against the inner wall of the groove in the shaft; brackets formed with racks adapted to engage said pinions; clamping means; and Washers interposed be- 5 tween said clamping means and said standards.
7. In adjustable furniture, the combination of supporting-stand ards a shaft 3' on rnaled in said standards; pinions secured on said shaft 10 by a spline-and-groove connection; brackets formed with racks adapted to engage said pin- I ions; clamping means; and Washers interposed between said clamping means and said standards, said washers being secured on said shaft by a spline-and-groove connection.
Dated at Bloomsburg this 19th day of December, A. D. 1900.
