No. 153 East High street, Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Grain-Binding Harvesters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, sueh'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificationi My invention relates to improvements in grain-binding harvesters, and principally to By my new system the grain is moved from the throat of the elevator positively and forcibly over the binder'deck to the grain-binding mechanlsm. i
The subject of this invention broadly is shown and described in my application filed October 29, 1900, Serial No. 34,682.
My improvements, as herein shown and described, particular reference being bad to the drawings and specification, consist in a peculiar mechanism for operating and adjustin g the butt adjuster reciprocating toothed-arm member and coacting members thereto to the difierent lengths of grain to be cut and means to place the grain properly to the binding mechanism that the band may encircle the grain at any desired point in the line of its length.
In grain-harvesters of the type here shown, where a horizontal grain-conveying belt and two elevator-belts are employed, the butts of the out grain are retarded in their horizontal movement by the standing grain. In consequence the heads travel faster than the butts and the'grain is deposited by the elevator upon the binder-deck in an oblique position, the butts hanging back, and the machine is often clogged at the front end of the elevator and front end of the binder-deck. Short, grassy, or wet grain also seriously interferes with the proper working of the machine. The butt-adj uster devicesheretofore used to bring the butts of the grain down to the bindingmechanism and shape the grain properly for binding were inadequate anddid not relieve the machine of these difficulties, and were constructed to operate only against the butt ends of the grain in a loose fiufiy condition, and did not positively control the 3 grain nor clear the elevator and the binderdeck of clogging matter.
The object of my present invention is to overcome these defects and to simplify the construction of my improvements upon buttadjnster mechanisms shown and described in my application, filed October 29, 1900, Serial No. 3%,682.
My improved butt-adjuster mechanism is composed of three principal members, one of positively and forcibly moving it over the binder-deck binderward while under compression, moving the but-ts faster than the heads,
clearing the grain and clogging matteroff the upper forward ends of the grain-elevator belts, stripping-roller, and binder-deck.
Said arm has a horizontal adjustment over the binder-deck while the machine is in operation for the purpose of directing grain of various lengths that it may be bound centrally of its length. This adjustment is cffected by constructing the arm in two parts.
Each part may have teeth, one part of said arm beiugan axial pivotal connection between said arm and its driving-crank, the pivotal bearing for the crank-shaft located in the grainward portion of said arm being horizontal, the axis of said pivotal connection between the two parts of said toothed arm being perpendicular to the plane of the binder-deck to allow said arm to swing over the binder-deck parallel to the plane thereof. The object of this peculiar construction and connection of said arm to its driving-crank is that the crank may always rotate in one path, while the opposite end of said arm, having teeth, may be adjusted parallel to the plane of the binder-deck during the working operation of the machine IOO 7 of the machine and extending over the grain upon the binder-deck to the binder mechanism and under which the' grain is forcibly drawn by the orbitular vertically-reciprocating moving toothed-arm member to the binder mechanism. An adjunct to said butt-adj uster consists of an adj usting-lever pivotall y connected to the wing-board memberand grain-depressor member and extending over the binder-deck-cover portionof the elevator within reach of the operator. The butt-adjuster mechanism is entirely independent of the binder mechanism in its adjustments, movements, and operations, each being separately and independently adjusted. The reciprocating toothed-arm member D ispivotally connected to the vertically-rotary crank D and driven by said rotary crank D. The shaft of the crank D is supported by and rotated in a stationary non-adjustable bearing B, (shown in Figs. 3 and 4,) formed in the single-piece metallic box A; and for the purpose of adjustment it becomes necessary to pivotally connect the grainward end of said reciprocating toothed-arm member D to the j ournal-box D the pivotal axis of which is vertical to the plane of the binder-deck,
said journal-box having a horizontal bear-' ing for the driving-crank shaft, (shown in Figs; 4, 6, and 7,) and the stubbleward e nd of said reciprocating toothed-arm member is universally pivotally connected to the upper end of the vibrating swinging link D by a universally pivotal box D The lower end of said link is pivotally connected to the wing-board member 0, permitting the proper horizontal adjustment of said wing-board for long or short grain.
I prefer to construct the reciprocating toothedrarm member as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, the arm being divided. The grainward portion of the toothed-arm member D is a detached toothed head D, which has formed upon it the horizontal driving-crank bearing D and the axial vertically-pivotal connection Saidtoothed-head portionD is not pivotally adjustable parallel to the plane of the binder-deck. Themiddle portion of the toothed arm is axially pivotally connected perpendicular to the plane of the binder-deck to the forward portion D by the vertical pivot D to admit of adjustment over the binder deck parallel to the plane thereof; The forward end of the arm D is adapted to receive the vertical pivot D formed on the grainward portion D and is held in place by abolt' D thereby completing the horizontal and vertical pivotalconnection of the forward end D of thetoothednrin member to "the drivi'ng-crank D.
The stubbleward part of the reciprocating toothed arm D is provided with a universal pivotal connection E, made to fit over and on the pin E of the vibrating swinging linkD, and also provided with lugs E E to fit over the end of said arm and is" held in place by the bolt E passing through the lugs E E and the stubbleward end ofthe toothed arm D, thus completing the pivotal connection of the rearward'end of said arm to the vibrating swinging link, the lower end of said link pivotally connected to the wing-board 0.

In a grain-binding harvester, in combination, a horizontal grain-conveying belt, a pair of grain-elevator belts, a grain-binder mechanism, a binder-deck between the elevator and binder mechanism, a butt-adjuster mechanism, one member thereof consisting of an orbitally-moving, vertically-reciprocating arm member, having downwardly-projecting teeth, and locate'd ove'r the forward end of the binder-deck, means for moving said member alternately stubbleward and grainward above the path of the butts ofthe grain in one portion of its orbit and moving into and with grain in its return motion to move the grain binderward 5 said toothed-arm member extending grainward above a considerable portion of the grain upon said binder-deck near the buttsthereof, and compressing it upon said binder-deck; a driving-crank for said toothedarm having a horizontal shaft journaled in a stationary bearing in the elevator-framework, said toothed arm pivotally connected to its driving-crank bearing, the axis of said pivotal connection being perpendicular'to the plane of the binder-deck for the purpose of adjustment parallel to the plane of the binder-deck during its vertically-reciproeating movement's, a wing-board member at the butts of the grain, pivotally connected to theelevator-frame and extending from near the grain delivery end of the elevatortoward the binding mechanism and against which the butts of the grain glide in passing toward the binding mechanism; a grain-depressor member pivotally connected to a fixed portion of the machine, under which the grain is forced by the action of the reciprocatingtoothed-arm member; said wing-board member, grain-depressor member and reciprocating toothedarm member each having an independent pivotal connection to the elevator portion of the machine to admit of adjustment parallel to the plane of the binder-deck for the purpose set forth and described.

In a grain-binding harvester, in combination, a horizontal grain-conveying belt, a pair of grain-elevator belts, a grain-binding mechanism, a grain-binder deck between the elevator and binding mechanism,agrain-buttadjuster mechanism, connected with and supported by the elevator-framework of the machine, one member thereof consisting of a vertically-reciprocating, orbitally moving' arm, having downwardly-projecting teeth, and lo cated above the path of the butts of the grain and moving into the grain to move it binder- Ward; a vibrating swinging link universally pivotally connected at its upper end to the stubbleward end of said toothed-arm member, the wing-board member of said butt-adjuster to which the lower end of the swinging link is pivotally connected, the grainward end of said toothed-arm memberpivotally connected to the main portion of the toothed-arm member, the axis of said pivotal connection being perpendicular to the plane of the binder-deck to movein adjustment over the binder-deck parallel to the plane thereof for the purpose of adjusting the two portions of said toothedarm member, a crank having a bearing on the grainward end portion of the toothed-arm member, the shaft of said crank having ahorizontal bearing, said crank-shaft, horizontal bearing and crank remaining in their normal positions unaffected by the swinging adjustment of the main body of said toothed-arm member as set forth and described.

In a grain-binding harvester, in combination, a horizontal grain-conveying belt, a pair of grain-elevator belts, a binding mechanism, a binder-deck between the elevator and grain-binder mechanism, a butt-adjuster mechanism, one member thereof consisting of a reciprocating orbitally-moving toothed arm, composed of two parts, each part having downwardly-proj ectin g teeth and located over the forward end of the binder-deck, means for moving said member alternately stubbleward and grainward, said member acting grainward above the path of the grain in one portion of its orbit and downward and into the path of the grain in its return motion to compress the grain and hold it onto the binderdeck and move it binderward under compression; a rotary cran k havinga horizontal shaft, said crank being located overthe path of the butts of the grain, the grainward vportion of said toothed arm being pivotally connected thereto, the two portions of the arm being connected by a pivot, the axis of said pivot being perpendicularto the plane ofthe binderdeck, the main portion of said arm being thus connected to the crank by a universally-pivoted swinging joint for the purpose of adj ust ment parallel to the plane of the binder-deck to move the grain from the elevatorto the binder mechanism and adjust it lengthwise central to the band be it long or short.

In a grain-binding harvester, in combination, a horizontal grain-conveying belt, a pair of grain-elevator belts, a grain-binder mechanism, a binder-deck between the ele 'va'tor and binder mechanism, a butt-adjuster mechanism, one of its members consisting of a vertically-reciprocating orbitally-moving arm having downwardly-projecting teeth on roller-shafts, a pivotal connection between said crank and the main portion of said toothed arm at its grainward end, the axis ofsaid'pivot being perpendicular to the plane of the binder-deck to admit of adjustment of the stubbleward end of said toothed arm member parallel to the plane of the binderdeck when in reciprocating motion for the purposes set forth and described.

In a grain-binding harvester, in combination, a horizontal grainfconveying belt, a pair of grain-elevator belts, a grain-binder mechanism, a binder-deck between the elevator and binding mechanism, a grain-buttadjuster mechanism located between the grain-elevator portion of the machine and grain-binder mechanism and supported by the elevator portion of the machine, one member thereof consisting of a vertically-reciprocating orbit'ally-moving arm, having downwardly-projecting teeth on its under side, and located over the forward end of the binderdeck, said memberoperating above and moving into the path of the grain near the butts thereof, a driving-cran k for said toothed arm, the grainward end of said arm pivotally connected to its driving-crank bearing for adjustment over the binder-deck parallel to the plane thereof, a vibrating swinging link to which the stubbleward end of said arm is pivotally connected by a universal joint, a wing-board member of the butt-adjusterpivotally connected at its grainward end to the elevator-frame construction, the axis of said pivot being perpendicular to the plane of the binder-deck and adapted for adjustment of said wing-board member at its stubbleward end, over the binder-deck parallel to thevplane thereof to adjust grain of different lengths central to *the band for binding, the lower end of said link being pivotally connected to the stubbleward portion of said wing-board member.

In a grain-binding harvester, in combination, a horizontal grain-conveying belt, a pair of grain-elevator belts, a grain-binder mechanism, a binder-deck between the elevator and binder mechanism, an upper rollershaft for the upper grain-elevator belt, an upper roller-shaft for the lower grain-elevator belt, a grain-stripping roller located between the upper end of said lower grain-elevator belt and binder-deck, a grain-butt-adjuster mechanism located between the grain-elevator and grainwbin'der mechanism and supportedby the elevator portion of the machine, one member thereof consisting of a vertically-reciprocating orbitally-moving arm having downwardlyprojecting teeth located over the forward end of the binder-deck, a vertically-rotary crank for driving said arm and located over the path of the butts of the grain aud pivotally connected to the grainward-end portion of said arm, a driving-shaft for said crank horizontally disposed, a single-piece metallic box located on the forward upper end of the elevator portion of the machine having a horizontal stationary bearing for the forward end of said crank-shaf t, forming a support for the forward ends of all of said roller-shafts, a driving-gear mechanism for said toothed arm located in front of said single-piece metallic" IIO l box and connected with one of said rollershafts.

In a grain-binding harvester, in combination, a horizontal grain-conveying belt, a pair of grain-elevator belts, a grain-binder mechanism, a binder-deck between the elevator and binder mechanism, a butt-adjuster mechanism, one member thereof consisting of a vertically-reci procatin g orbitally-movin g arm having downwardly-projecting teeth located over the forward end of the binderdeck, said arm moving grainward above the path of the butts of the grain in one portion of its orbit and into and with the grain near the butts thereof in another portion of its orbit to move the grain binderward over the binder-deck toward the binding mechanism, a vertically-rotary crank for driving said arm, the shaft of said crank horizontally disposed; said crank located over the path of the butts of the grain and pivotally connected to the grainward end portion of said arm bya suitable bearing thereon, a driving-gear mechanism directly from the forward end of the upper roller-shaft of the upper elevator to said crank-shaft, said roller-shaft and said crankshaft revolving in the same direction to change the flow of the grain from an upward to a downward direction binderward.
11.- In a grain-bindingharvester, in combination, a horizontal grain-conveying belt, a pair of grain-elevator belts, a grain-binder mechanism, a binder-deckbetween the elevator and grain-binder mechanism, grainmoving and butt-adjuster mechanism, one member thereof consisting of a reciprocating orbitally moving arm having downwardly-projecting teeth and located over the forward end of the binder-deck and driven directly from the forward end of the upper roller-shaft of the upper elevator belt, a driving-crank for the toothed arm, a chaingearing connecting said roller-shaft and driving-crank shaft, by means of toothed sprocketwheels located on the forward ends of said shafts, each rotating in the same direction, the toothed sprocket-wheel on said rollershaft being smaller than the toothed sprocket- Wheel located on said driving crank shaft causing the toothed-arm member to move at a slower speed than said upper roller-shaft, the shaft of said crank horizontally disposed and a sin gle-piece metallic box secured to the forward upper portion of the elevator having a stationary bearing in which said crankshaft is journaled; said parts disconnected from and independent of the binder mechanism and its adjustments.

In a grain-binding harvester, in combination, a horizontal grain-conveying belt, a pair of grain-elevator belts, a grain-binder mechanism, a binder-deck between said grainelevator and grain binder mechanism, a grain-butt-adjuster mechanism, one member thereof consisting of a vertically-reciprocating orbitally moving arm, having downwardly-projecting teeth, and located over the forward end of the binder-deck and driven directly from the forward end of the upper rollershaft of the upper elevator, a rotary drivingcrank, a single-piece metallic box secured to the forward upper end of the elevator and having a bearing, the shaft of said crank horizontally disposed and journaled in said bearing, the rearward end of said shaft extending over the path of the butts of the grain and its crank pivotally connected to the grainward end of said toothed arm member, a chain-and-sprock-et connection between the forward ends of said crank-shaft and upper shaft of the upper elevator, the toothed sprocket-wheel located on"the upper rollershaft of the upper elevator being smaller than the toothed sprocket-wheel located on said driving-crank shaft to impart aslower motion to said toothed-arm member than said roller-shaft; all of said parts independent of the binder mechanism and its adjustments.
