IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 68,662, dated September 10,1867.
To all whom 'it may concern:
- Be it known that I, PERRY W. SMITH, of Abipgdon, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Machine for Cultivating Plants in Bows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my machine without the ordinary wheels and plows, and Fig. 2 is a section of the same.
The main features in my machine are the two transverse frame-pieces A, onto which the tongue B is bolted. Beneath these crosspieces I bolt on the metallic devices I) D D D, provided with the sliding knuckles E E E E, and the adj usting-bars O O, by which I regulate the vertical adjustment of the beams. These metallic bars D D D D also furnish a simple and cheap means of attaching the draft. On the end of the pole or tongue 1 place two hooks, Z, for the purpose of supporting the plows up from the ground when turning, &c.,
by simply lifting the plows and hooking the braces on the hook Z. I also put three holes in the plates at the end of the plow-beams,
where they are attached to the bar P. The ordinary working-hole is the center one but I t in case I want stili' beams, or, in other words,
no lateral movement, for the purpose of work-: ing diamonds, 1n lay ng corn by, I place a. H pin in one of the side holes, and make thereby a stiff joint.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to i secure by Letters Patent, is-- I 1. The combination of frame-pieces A A,
