SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,242, dated September 24, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LnsLIE ROBERT ANNETT, a citizen of theUnited St-ates,residin g at Boise, in the county of Ada and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Plow and Brush-Cutter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relatesto weed and brush cutters, and particularly to that class designed for use in cutting sage-brush.

The objects of the invention are, first, to provide a cutting attachment for use in connection with sulky-plows which can be readily connected to or removed therefrom; second, to provide novel means for guiding the rear wheel through a counecting-rod taking movement from the tongue of the sulky; third, to provide novel blade-carrying parts comprising a frame of rigid structure which will withstand the strain incident to its use, and, finally, the object of the invention is the production of a brush-cutting attachment for sulky-plows which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and inexpensive structure.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a sulky-plow with an attachment-embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of a fragmentof the frame. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of several elements of the rear truck-frame and the beam for connecting the rear truck to the sulky. Fig. 5 is a detail view in perspective of a connecting rod and its turnbuckle detached. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the knives and the guide-strips.

In the drawings, 1 indicates the sulky of an ordinary plow, and 2 the beam thereof, which Serial No. 50,280. (No modelis the shape of an I-beam in cross-section, in the channel of which is fitted the connection 3. This connection 3 is given a quarter-twist and is provided with a depending end 4, to which the rear frame 5 is attached through the medium of the clips 6, which pass through suitable coinciding apertures of the frame and depending ends, as fully shown in Fig. 4. The clips also bind a bearing 7 to the frame at the rear, in which is rotatably mounted a standard 8. A collar 9 is fixed on the standard to limit its downward movement, and a bracket 10, fixed to the standard, extends downwardly on an incline. A stud 11 is carried by the bracket, and a ground-wheel is mounted on the stud. The bracket is provided with an extension 12, having an end 13 standing at right angles over the periphery of the ground-wheel 14. A scraper or cleaner .15 is secured to the end 13 and bears against the ground-wheel to prevent accumulation thereon.

across the longitudinal center of the frame, so that the movement of the tongue is imparted to the standard, which turns in its bearings and guides the rear truck.

The frame 5 has depending portions 20, with their extremities 21 inclined outwardly and slightly rearwardly in order that the knives 22 may be attached thereto and assume an inclined position with their cutting edges out* side of the plane of their upper edges. The knives converge toward the front of the frame and are provided with angular ends 23. A guide-strip 24.- is bolted to the sheth 25 and is of such width as to extend below the plane of the cutting edges of the knives. The end of the guide-strip is provided with a depending shovel-like point 26, which forms a furrow for the guide-strip. Just back of the point 26 the guide-strip is provided with an opening 27, in which the angular ends of the blades or knives abut, said ends being bolted to the shovel-like end of the guide-strip and are further held through the engagement of the end of the blades in the opening 27. By an inspection of Fig. 2 it will be seen that as the guide-strip travels in the furrow lateral displacement will be prevented when the knives are in action. Braces 28 extend from the connection 3 to the depending members 20 of the rear frame for giving rigidity to the structure.

The seat 29 is supported by a spring 30, bolted to the connection 3 at the rear.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a Weed-cutter, the combination with the sulky, beam and sheth of a plow, of an attachment carrying cutter-blades, means for connecting the attachment to the beam and sheth a caster-wheel secured to the attachment and a rod connected to the sulky and attachment for guiding the wheel.

2. In a weed-cutter, the combination with the sulky, of a frame, a connection between the sulky and frame, cutting-blades attached to the frame at the rear and converging at the front, a guide-board having its lower edges depending below the edges of the cutterblades and means for joining the parts together, substantially as described.

3. The combination in a weed-cutter, of a truck,cutter-blades V-shaped in plan,a guideboard depending below the edges of the cutter-blades and means for connecting the parts with the truck, substantially as described.

4. The combination in a weed-cutter,of cutter-blades V-shaped in a plan, a guide-board intermediate of and extending rearwardly from the apex of the cutter-blades to which the cutter-blades are secured at their forward -secured to the sheth, said guide-board having a slot in its forward end and a shovel-like projection, cutter-blades with their lower edges above the plane of the lower edge of the guideboard,said cutter-blades having angular ends lying in the slot of the guide-board and bolted to the shovel-like extension, a frame having depending members to which the rear ends of the cutter-blades are secured, a' connection between the plow-beam and the frame, a rear truck for supporting the frame,an adjustable connecting-rod placed diagonally of the longitudinal center, and arms on the sulky-tongue and the standard of the rear truck to which the connecting-rod is pivoted, substantially as described.

6. In a weed-cutter, the combination with the sulky-beam and sheth of an ordinary sulky-plow, of a guide-board secured to the sheth and having a shovel-like end and an opening back of the shovel,cutterblades having angular ends lying in the openings and bolted to the shovel-like end, said blades diverging toward the rear and set with their cutting edges outside of the vertical plane of their top edges, a frame having depending members with laterally and rearwardly disposed extremities, to which the rear ends of the cutter-blades are secured,a connection between the frame and the beam,a journal-bearing secured on the frame, a bracket having a standard journaled in the bearing a wheel on the bracket, a scraper on an extension of the bracket, bearing against the periphery of the wheel,arms on the standard and on the tongue of the sulky, an adjustable connecting-rod stationed diagonally across the longitudinal center and connecting the arms as and for the purpose described.
