RAILROAD-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 682,01 1, dated September 3, 1901. Application filed May 3, 1901. Serial No. 58,580. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMBROSE WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in railway-ties, and has for one object the provision of novel means whereby the rails are securely fastened to the cross-ties.
Another object of the present invention is to construct fastening means upon the crossties that will permit the rails to be easily placed in their proper position and a construction that will allow the removal of the rails with but very little trouble.
The invention has for its further object to construct a railway-tie and fastening means that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
The present invention further aims to entirely dispense with the use of fish-plates and spikes; furthermore, to construct the parts in such a manner that they can be applied to curves, as well as straight lines of track.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a pair of rails and cross-ties having my improvements attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional and a front elevation taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the yoke. Fig. at is a perspective View of the wedge. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the locking-lug.
In the drawings the reference-numeral l indicates the rails; 2, the cross-ties, which may be either of wood or steel construction.
The reference-numeral 3 indicates a locking-wedge which is approximately the Width of the cross-tie, said locking-wedge carrying an inclined upper face 4 and a shoulder 5,
The reference-numeral 6 indicates a yoke which encircles the end of the tie and the lower portion of the wedge. Said yoke carries an interior inclined face 7, which corresponds with the inclined face i of the wedge. This yoke 6 is seated in a recess 8, formed in the underneath face of the tie.
The reference-numeral 9 represents a lug having an opening 10 formed therein for the reception of the bolt 11, carrying a head 12, seated in the recess 14, formed in the under face of the cross-tie. The said bolt 11 carries screw-threads 15 on its other end for the reception of the nut 16 and which also receives the washer 17.
The locking-lug is formed to correspond with the inner contour of the rail and is adapted to engage the web, the under side of the tread, and upper face of the base portion of the rail.
In order to fasten the rails, the wedge and strap are first placed in proper position. The rails are then arranged in proper alinement and the locking lug turned so as to form a positive engagement with the web of the rail, thereby wedging the rail and retaining the same in proper position against the shoulder of the wedge. When it is desired to remove the rail, the locking-lugs are turned, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, thereby disengaging the web of the rail and allowing the same to be removed from engagement therewith.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a locking-lug having a perforation therein adapted to receive a bolt,
the said lug having a cut-away portion formed adapted to abut against the web of the rail.
in its base for the reception of the base of the rail, of a Wedge-block having cut-away portions for the reception of the under face of the tread and the base of the rail, and an integral yoke adapted to be countersunk in the rail-tie and engage the upper face of the Wedge-block, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a locking-lug having a perforation therein, a bolt adapted to secure the said 111g to the tie, the said lug having a cut-away portion formed in its base adapted to receive the base of the rail, of a wedge-
