PATENT 1F FFICE.
IRVING E. FOLTZ, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
COMB.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 681,206, dated August 27, 1901.-
Application filed July 19, 1900.
To: all whom it may concern: 1 [Be it knownthat I, IRVING E. FOLTZ, a citiyjzen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State 5, of Illinois, have invented certain new and 1 useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification. The object of this invention is to construct an attachment to combs consisting of two curved surfaces held lengthwise in connection with the comb, one on each side of the j a y comb near the base of the teeth, so as to prea, vent the hair as it is combed from reaching 1 the bottom of the teeth. f t In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is Q j a face representation of a comb with my attachment in position thereon. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. The comb may be of any of the usual constructions, and in this instance the back 1 of l the comb is in wedge form and thicker at its outer edge and tapering toward the base of 1 the teeth. I p A hair guard and burnisher has a connection with the back of the comb, and in this instance consists of two rolled or curved surfaces3, connected by an arched band 4:, cmbracing the sides and edge of the back of the comb. The curved surfaces 3 extend below f the base of the teeth, as shown at Fig. 3, and in this instance the arched band is made of spring material in order that the curved surf, faces may adhere to the sides of the back of p the comb and be retained in position thereon.
serial No. 24,162. (No model.)
In combining the curved surfaces with the comb and locating the surfaces below the base of theteeth in using the comb the hair will not come in contact with the back of the combat the base of the teeth nor be drawn over any sharp or rough edges, but will come in contact with the curved surfaces, as shown by the dotted line in Fig. 3.
In the use of an ordinary comb a considerable quantity of hair is pulled out or broken off by the hair wedging in the angles at the base of the teeth, and the spaces between the teeth at the base thereof collect much. dirt and require frequent cleaning. My improved attachment for combs forms a greatly broadened and curved surface over which the hairs are drawn and which conducts the hair through only the clear open portion of the spaces between the teeth, thereby overcoming the objections above noted and imparting a smooth surface to the hair.
I claim as my invention-- The combination with a comb, of a hair guard and burnisher comprisinga channeled body portion adapted to receive the back of the comb lengthwise therein, the longitudinal edges of said body portion being curved and disposed upon opposite sides of the comb so as to overhangthe teeth thereof at the base.
IRVING E. FOLTZ.
