IMPROVEMENT IN GUTTER-HEADS FOR PLANING MACHINES.

'TO ALL WHOM IT MAYC'ONCERN:

Be it known that I, MATTHEW FQ GONNETT, of Ladoga, in the `county of Montgomery, and State of Indiana, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Cutter-Heads for Turning' Plough-Handles; and ll do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation -of the same, referendo being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made part of this specification, and in which- -Figurc 1 is a perspective view of acutter-head illustrating my invention. v

Figure 2 is an end elevation of the same, a portion being represented as broken away to show the manner of attaching the cutters.

The object of this invention is to provide a cutter-head of such construction as that it shall perform the functions of a guide and 'gauge as well as turn the stuit; that is to say, the device is designed to perform the oliice of a pattern and guide, and render the employment .of special devices unnecessary.

To this end the invention consists in so applying the cutters to the revolving head as to leave a central space between the knives, which are placed on the opposite sides o f the head, and act on the wood in such a way as-toleave a small central ridge thereon, which vescapes the action of the cutters, and constitutes a gauge to preventthem from. going deeper into the wood than desired. The knives areI also so fixed that they donot eut outward to the cxtreme rims or sides et' the head, which are thus made to act as an eilicient guide.

To enable others skilled in the. art to which 4my invention appertains to fully understandV and use the same, I`will proceed to describe its construction and operation in detailin connection with the accompanying drawings. l I

A represents the head, to which the cutters B B are applied. TheV head represented has four cutters or `knives, but the number may be varied at the option of the user. A rapid rotary movement is imparted to the cutter-head inany suitable manner. The cutters' are applied to the opposite sides of the cutter-headin the manner represcnted,.tl1at is to say, the cutters are so placed that they extend and cut almost, but not quite, to the centre of the periphery of the head, thus leaving a slight intermediate central space where the cutters, during their revolution, cannot act upon the wood. The eect is obvious. That portion'of the plough-handle G4 which is subjected to the action of the cutters is turned or finished, but a ridge, c, is made at the portion ofV the Wood which occupies the space between the opposite cutters, and this ridge coming in contact with the periphery of the cutter-head, serves as a, gauge, which limits the penetration of the cutters into the irregular surface ot` the handle. This device will also he available in the nishing of wheel-felices. vThe cutting edges of the knives do not .extend to the edges oi' the head, and the latter thus form guides, which insure an even, regular movement of the stud' on the cutterdiead. `The respective cutters may be secured in place by screws D, and can be readily replaced. Y

The operation of the cutter-head is as follows: First, the cutter-head 'is putin motion so as to rotate from you. The piece to be turned is then taken in the hand and laid in the groove in the periphery oi' the cutterhead. Yuvthen'pdraw the entire piece towards you through the groove, and then turn it over if necessary.

Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

I claim a putter-head for turning plough handles, when constructed with the knives B B, which arevso arranged as to leave a central space to limit the penetration 0E the c utters and guides at the edgesof the cutter-head,'as and for the purpose specified. i
