DEVICE FOR PERFORATING WELL TUBES OR CASINC-S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,856, dated July 23, 1901.
Application filed February 2l, 1901. Serial No. 48,249. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. BELLAH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Visalia, in the county of Tulare and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Perforating Well Tubes or Casings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.`-
The invention relates to devices for perforating well tubes or casings whereby said tubes or casings maybe tapped or perforated,
so that fluid which may be encountered at various depths can all be admitted to the tube or casing and the greatest flow obtained.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, and efcient in operation.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved device for perforating well tubes or casings. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the device within a well tube or casing and showing in full lines the punching-bits or perforators in the position they assume before being forced to the sides of the well tube or casing and showing in dotted lines the position they assume when forced through the walls of said well tube or casing.
Referring to the drawings, l denotes the body portion of the device, tubular in construction and preferably consisting of the rings t and b and connecting-strips c. To the ring t are attached arms d, to which is secured a steel collar f. The strips c are each provided with a set of parallel ears g, to which are pivoted the shanks 2 of the punching-bits or perforators 3, the points of which work transversely through openings h, formed in the ring b. The upper ends of these Shanks 2 are provided with arms 4, which are bent inwardly at an angle to the Shanks 2 and are preferably provided with beveled faces 5. The lower ends of the shanks are also provided with friction-rollers 6.
7 denotes the expander, which consists of an oppositely-tapered head 8, the tapering portion 8 of which is adapted to expand or press outwardly the bits or perforators and the tapering portion S2 of which is adapted to engage the angular arms to draw the perforators or bits within the tubular body portion. This expander is connected or formed integral with an operating-rod S3, which in turn is connected to the well-drilling machinery and is adapted to be operated thereby.
In operation the rope or vhawser is con* nected to the steel collar f and the device lowered into the well tube or casing and is held suspended at the proper depth therein by said rope or hawser to tap or perforate said well tube or casing, and power is applied to the rod 83, which is forced downward, thus forcing outwardly the bits or perforators and causing them to penetrate the well tube or casing. A lifting or reverse movement of the rod 83 will cause the tapering surface S2 to draw the bits or perforators inwardly through the openings in the ring b, so that in the lowering or raising of the device within the well tube or casing the points of the bits or perforators will be shielded by the ring I) and be prevented from being brought into con tact with the sides of the well tube or casing, which would blunt or dull theln.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described, the combination of a body portion comprising upper and lower rings, strips connecting the IOC upper and loWer rings and formed with inwardly-projecting integral ears, said lower ring being provided With openings and said upper ring beingconnected by diagonal braces d to a collarf, angular bit-Shanks pivoted between each set of ears and having their bits adapted to be projected through the openings in the lower ring, rollers journaled in the heel of the bit, and an expander consisting of an oppositely-tapering head and an operating-rod, said head when moved in one direction adapted to expand the bits to force them outwardly through the openings in the lower ring and when moved in the opposite direction adapted to retract or draw said bits inwardly through said openings in said ring andhold them in that position so that the points will be guided by said ring in the Vertical movement of the body portion of said device, substantially as described.
