Doorn-KNOB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 677,625, dated July 2, 190i.
Application filed January-18, 1901. Serial No. 43,748. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:-
' Be it known that I, CARL F. BIELE, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Knobs, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to an improved knob for the doors of private offices, factories, tbc., where it is desired to exclude the general public and permit the door to be opened only by employees and others conversant with the construction of the knob; and the invention consists of a door-knob which comprises an outer recessed false knob, an inner movable auxiliary knob, and a rotatable operatingspindle connected with said auxiliary knob; and the invention consists, further,of certain details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective View of my improved doorknob shown in position upon a door, and Fig. 2 is a verticalv longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A
Referring to the drawings, A represents the door, and B a false knob, which is preferably fixed stationary upon the door and which may be made integral with the roseplate C. The shank of the false knob is made tubular, and the face of the same is provided with a circular recess b, in which is placed an auxiliary door-knob D, which is provided withfour or more semicircular recesses el, that serve for placing the thumb and three adjacent fingers of the hand in the same, so as to permit the turning of the auxiliary knob on its axis. The shank D is made in one piece with the spindle E, which passes through the door and is provided at its inner side with' a door-knob F in the usual manner. At the center of the auxiliary knob D is arranged a square, round, or other projection d, which is intended to represent the termination of the spindle D.
When it desired to open the door, the thumb and three adjacent fingers are placed in the recesses of the auxiliary knob I) and the same turned thereby so as to withdraw the reason that as the auxiliary knob D is within i the contour of the stationary or false knob B, the fingers and hand do not contact with said auxiliary knob, or at all events not with sufficient friction to operate the spindle and withdraw the latch. The dooris opened from the opposite side in the usual manner by the knob F.
My improved construction of door-knob prevents the opening of au office or other door by parties who are not desired to enter, but permits the opening and entrance by em'- ployees or other parties familiar with the knob. The recesses and center projection of the auxiliary knob D may be made in different shapes or grouped differently, provided they are so arranged that the fingers of the hand can be readily inserted for turning the auxiliary knob and opening thereby the door without difficulty. The auxiliary door-knob can be made integral with the spindle or attached to the same and the false knob may be made integral with the rose-plate C or separated therefrom and connected with the door in any suitable manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A door-knob, consisting of an'outer recessed false knob, an inner movable auxiliary knob, and a rotatable operating-spindle connected with said auxiliary knob, substantially as set forth.
2. A door-knob, consisting of an outer re cessed false knob made integral with the roseplate and secured to the door, a rotatable auxiliary knob located in the recess of the false knob, and provided with recesses for the fingers of the hand, and a rotatable operating-spindle connected with said auxiliary knob, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres; ence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL F. BIELE. nesses: JOSEPH H. NILEs, PAUL GoErEL.
