JACK FOR HOLDING BOOTS ORSHOES.
SPECIFIGATON iorming peu-'t of Letters Patent No. 677,550, dated VJuly 2, 1901. Application led Aprll?, y1900. Serial No. 13,195. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it. may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. MEYER, of
Boston, county of Sulolk, and State of Massaed for use on sole-leveling machines, yet it` chusetts, have invented an Improvement in Jacks for Hold-ing Boots orShoes whilebelng Operated Upon, of which the following dev.
scription, in connection with the'accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters 'on the drawings representing 1o` like parts. This invention'has for its object to construct a jack for holding boots and shoes while being operated upon, being especially adapt- A may be used for-any other purpose.
AThe -jaek embodying. this invention `-conif prises, essentially, a toc-support and a .heel-V snpport, one of which is made adjustable toward and from the other, said toe-support he-V ing adapted to receive the toe of the last having a boot or shoe thereon, andthe heel-support having means for engaging the heel end of said last, and my invention kresides particularly in the construction of said heel-support. The heel-support comprises an up-v right post having pivoted to its' upper end a block which is provided with means for engaging the heel end of the last, and said np- 'rightppostvhas a circular portion at or near its lower end which is provided with cal guideway, and a rack-bar is disposed in said guideway which is connected by a link with said pivoted block, and
f nut is disposed on the circular portion of said sui-table construction 5 post which is free to turn thereon and which` .engages said rackbar and moves said rackbar longitudinally when turned, Vand means yfor holding said nut in proper are provided position-. A Figure l shows in side elevations. jack om# bodying this inventionror' holding boots and shoes While beingpperated upon.- Fig. 2 is a Side elevationand partial section of th jack shown in Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is averticgl tion of the heel-support of the jack, taken on the dotted line 8 3, Fig. 2. y
a represents the base, which may be of any sui-table construction',I and b the toe-support erected thereon, which also may be of any adapted to receive and "support the toe of the last having a boot or shoe thereon, (theiboot or shoe being removed a vertiv a hand-operated SBC- from the last in th drawings for the sakeof better illustrating the inventiom) y y j The upright support c of the'heel-support rises from or iserected upon ablock c', which 5 5 is' formed or provided-on its `under side with a dovetailed recess adapting it to receive and slide along on the dovetaile'd projection e2 on the'base a.- The dovetailed projection e2 is cut away or recessed to receive a screw ci, 6o
the threaded portion of which turns on a nut c5, secured to t-heunder side of the block c', so that as said screw is turned i n one or the othe'rdirection the heel-support Will be rnoved `along on the'dovetailed projection toward and 65 from the toe-support. The screw c4 vhas a smooth shank o6 disposed in a suitable bear-A ing provided for it on the base a, and a handwheel c7 is'secure'd to the end of said screw for turning it, yet solfar as this invention is 7o -oonoerned any other suitable 'means may be provided vfor adjusting said heel-Support to# ward and frointhe toe-support.
' The upright post c has a block d pivoted to its upper end at d', and said block d ispro- 75 vided with an upright pin d2, adapted toenter a socket formed or. provided in the heel end of the last, and said pin thus serves as a j means of engagingthe heel end of the last, yet so far as this invention is concerned any 8o other means may beprovided for accomplish in'g this result. Y v '1 The pivoted block d projects forward and is loosely connected by a link d3 with a movable melnber d4, which in the present instance 85 is shown as a rack-bar adapted to 'slide ver# tically in a guideway for it formed orprovidedin onel side lof the upright post c near its base. The lowerend portion of the upright post c, l in which the vertical guideway for the rack- 9o bar is formed, is made circular in cross-sec- Vtion and receives upon it a hand-nut e, which is' free' 'to turn thereon, and the threaded portion of said-nut e engages the teeth on the rack-bar d4, so that as said hand-nut is rotated 95 said rack-bar will be moved up' and down, acording 'to the direction'of movement of the hand-nut. .As the rack-bar @Z4 is. thus positively moved in both directions by said handnut the block 'd will be movedon .its pivot, 'loo and thereby adjusted relatively to the toesuppor.'
`provided for accomplishing this result.
A nut f is screwed onto the circular portion of the upright post o just above the hand-nut, 'which holds said hand-nut in its properrelative position, yetany other means may goe T 1e hand-nut e not only positively movespthe block d on its pivot in both directions, but also very securely holds saidblock in whatever position it may be set, which is an important feature of this invention.
It Will be seen thatas the block dis rocked Vsupport consisting of a block having means 2O for engaging the heel end of the last, an upright support to which said block is pivoted,
.havinga circular portion provided with a vertical guideway, a rack-bar disposed in said guideway, a link connecting said pivoted block with said rack-bar, a nut disposed on said circular portion of the upright support which engages and operates said rackbar, and means for holding said nut in position on the upright support, substantially as described.
2. In a-jack for holding boots and shoes, the combination with a toe-support, of'a heelsupport consisting of a block having means for engaging the heel end of the lastan uprightsupport to which said block is pivoted, having a circular portion provided Witha vertioal guideway, a rack-bar disposed in said guideway, a link connecting said pivoted block with said raokb'ar, a nut disposed on said 'circular portion ofA the upright support which engages/and operates said rackbar,
'means'jfor holding said .nut in position on' the upright support, a base on which said upright support is mounted, and means for moving it along on said base toward and from the toesupport, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 'name' to'this .specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
