TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL WHITAKER, of Macon, in the county of Macon, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Alarm for Travellers; and do'herehy declare that the following is a full, clear. and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i

In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, represents ame'tallidbox or case, in which is secured :1. small bell similar to those used in the ordinary clock, a, e,'.an d z are shafts, which are placed in a vertical position in the box A, at a suitable distance apart, their lower ends having hearings in the bottom of the box, and their upper ends having hearings in a metallic frame, 3 Tlie'shaft a has one end of a fiat spring secured to it, the other end ofsaid spring being secured to one of the posts which holds up the frame y. W represents a ratchet-wheel, which is secured upon shaft a, immediately over a gear-wheel, E, which is slipped loosely over said shaft. Upon the upper face of the wheel E is a dog or pawl, P, which is pressed against the teeth of wheel W by a spring, S. When the shaft a is turnedin one direction, the wheel E is stationary, and does not move with it, but when it is turned in the other direction, the pawl P causes it to turn with the shaft. Upon shaft e is secured a pinion, into which the gearavheel E meshes, and above this pinion is secured a toothed wheel, F. To the shaft 2: is secured a rod, K, which has n. bell-hammer onits outer end; also secured to this shaft is an arm, H, and a pallet, G. The points or teeth of the pallet catch into the teeth of the wheel F. I-

represents a. small door at one end of box A, and to this door, upon its inner face, is secured a hooked rod I When this door I is dropped, as seen in the figures, its red J catches the arm H and holds it fast, but as soon as the door is thrown up, said arm is released. Y

This alarm is set in motion as follows: By means of a key similar to the ordinary clock-key the shaft a is turned until the-spring secured to it is wound around it sufiiciently. As soon aspressure is removed from shaft :1, the pawl P, connecting wheel E to wheel W, causes said wheel E to revolve with the shaft, which, of course, is

I turned by the spring. The wheel E, working into the pinion of shaft e, causes said shaft, with its wheel F, to

revolve, which gives motion to the pallet G and rod K, with its hammer. The hammer, striking the hell I), gives the alarm. L represents a slide, which is connected to the side of the box, and which may be moved up against the pallet, to prevent its operation, when desirable. B represents a longscrew with a clamp, 0, upon it, by means of which the box may be secured to the door-easing. When the shaft (.1 is turned so as to wind the alarm up, the gear-wheels cannot move until the slide L is out of the way and arm H is released. The machine is set by throwing down the door I so that its rod Jwill catch the arm H. The alarm is set in motion by throwing up door I, which is done as follows: A cord, M, is secured to the outer end of the door I, and then passed through a loop or eye on thecover of the box, and then secured to-the door'of the room, or some object in the room. As soon as the room door is opened, or the object to which the string is secured is moved, the string throws the door I up, and releases arm H, and the machine at once commences giving the alarm.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim isv I The arrangement of the box A with its door I, rod J, shaft 2:, with its rod K, pallet G, and arm H, hell I), and respective parts for operating the same, when constructed, arranged, and used in the manner substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
