To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. BRANDEN- BURG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grave-Vaults; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in burial-vaults; and its primary object is to provide a device of simple and durable construction the parts of which may be readily placed together and held in proper relation to each other in position within an ordinary grave.

A further object is to provide means whereby the cement employed for sealing the vault is securely held in position.

With these vand other objects in view the invention consists in providing end and side walls of peculiar construction which are adapted to rest upon the edges of a base. Pins are so located upon the base as to form anchors for cement, which serves to seal the joints.

The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of the vault. Fig. 2 is a transverse section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a plan view with the cover removed. Fig. 4. is a detail view of an end Wall. Fig. 5 is a similar view of a side wall. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the bottom of the vault, and Fig. 7 is a similar view of the top.

Referring to the figures by numerals of ref-v erence, 1 is a base, preferably rectangular in form and constructed of any desired material, as stone. A rectangular platform or raised portion 2 is arranged upon the center of this base at a suitable distance from the edges thereof, and horizontally-extending anchoring-pins 3 projectfrom the sides and ends of this platform at right angles thereto.

The sides 4 of the vault are adapted to rest upon the base l between the side edges thereof and the adjacent edges of the platform 2, and the inner face of each of the side walls is recessed at the upper edge, as at 5, forming a shoulder 6. End walls 8 are adapted t-o overlap the end edges of the base l and the sides 4, and a raised portion 9 is formed upon the inner face of each of these end walls, for1ning upper and lower shoulders 10, the lower one of which is adapted to rest upon the base at points between the edge thereof and the adjacent edge of the platform 2. Each of the raised portions 9 is recessed at its side edges, as at 11. It will be seen that the ends of the side walls will be overlapped by those porn tions of the end walls which lie between their side edges and the recessed portions 9. The upper shoulders 10 of the end Walls are in alinement with the shoulders 6 when the parts are assembled upon the base. After the parts have been placed together in the positions above described cement is placed within the grooves adjacent to the joints and firmly seals the same.

When it is desired to seal the vault, the cover 13, which is preferably formed of a single slab of stone and provided with an inclined top, is placed between the side and end Walls, so as to rest upon the shoulders 6 and 1U. Cement is then placed upon the top, along the edges thereof, and will efectually seal the joints. It will be seen that the cement will prevent the admission of moisture, die., to the vault, and the parts will be held firmly together by the earth, which is adapted to be tightly packed about the outer sides of the vault.

It Will be seen that this vault is especially adapted to be placed in ordinary graves. The

. device is simple and durable in construction,

and the parts can be readily assembled.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore re- IOO serve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A grave-vault comprising a base-plate having a platform provided with projecting horizontal pins at its sides and ends, the side plates seated on the sides of the base-plate outside of the side pins, so as to leave spaces between the platform and the side plates and having recesses at their upper edges providing shoulders at their inner sides, the end plates lapping the ends of the base-plate and the ends of the side plates, and having inwardly-projecting portions fitting between the side plates and seated on the ends of the base-plate outside of the end pins so as to leave spaces between the platform and the projecting portions of the end plates means for holding the vault together and the cover seating on the shoulders of the side plates, and on the projecting portions of the end plates.

2. A grave-vault comprising a base-plate having a platform provided with projecting horizontal pins at its sides and ends, the side plates seated on the sides of the base-plate outside of the side pins', so as to leave spaces between the platform and the side plate, and

having recesses at their upper edges providing shoulders at their inner sides, the end plates lapping the ends of the base-plate and the ends of the side plates and having inwardly-projecting portions formed with vertical recesses and fitting between the side plates and seated on the ends of the baseplate outside of the end pins so as to leave spaces between the platform and the projecting portions of the end plates, concrete material filling the spaces between the platform and the side plates, the spaces between the projecting portions and the side plates, and the spaces between the platform and the projecting portions and the cover seating on the shoulders of the side plates and on the projecting portions of the end plates.
