SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 673,819, dated May '7, 1901. Application filed February 6, 1899. Renewed April 9, 1901. Serial No. 55,070. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CAREY PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates, of which the following is a specification.
The object of myinvention is to provide an improved construction of sectional grate, so as to increase the durability7 of such article, while at the same time facilitating the handling of the grate, so as to quickly dump the ashes.
My improvement consists in a sectional grate having novel features of construction, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which*- Figure I is a plan view of a series of myimproved sectional grates located within a furnace. Fig. II is a transverse section thereof on the line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is a perspective view of the rear supportingbar. Fig. IV is a perspective view of the outer end of one of the sectional gratos.
1 may represent parts of the body of a furnace having a nre-chamber 2.
3 is a rear bar, and 4t a front bar, upon which a series of my improved sectional grates are shown supported by trunnions 6. Each grate is constructed with a central section 5, formed with V-'shaped ridges and having end trunnions 6, whereby they are supported so as to be adapted to be turned by suitable means in recesses provided in the upper edges of the rear and front bars 3 and 4 respectively.
7 represents grooves formed in the sides of the-central section, providing a pair of inclined anges or extensions 8 to the ridges.
9 represents side sections or wings having tongues l0 formed on their inner edges, whereby they are fitted to the grooves 7 of the central section 5. Theseside sections or extensions are each formed with a series of longitudinal draft slots or openings l1 for the passage of air to feed the fuel and with transverse fingers 12, alternating with similar fingers 12 of the adjacent side sections or wings 9. The outer tru unions 6 are connected by a rod 13, extending through horizontal holes 14, formed therein so as to hold the series of grates in normal position. Whenit is desired to dump the clinkers or clear the grate, the rod 13 is removed. The individual grates can then be turned by a bar inserted in vertical holes l5, formed in the outer trunnions for this purpose. It Will thus be seen that my improved sectional grate is divided into three separable parts, consisting of a central section and two side sections. The side sections are adapted to be slid endwise out or in, so as to be removed and replaced when the grates are turned a quarter around in either direction, according to whether it is desired to remove the right or left side section. As shown in the drawings, the side sections are connected with the central section by dovetail joints, which provide a simple form of joint. The wings or side sections being removable there is no difficulty in substituting new side sections or wings as they become burned out. The fuel is readily winged from grate to grate as the fuel burns up. The grate is also reversible, so that what.
is at first used as the top of the grate can be turned over so as to use the bottom of the grate as the top.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A sectional grate comprising a central section, longitudinal side sections, and groovean d-tongue joints between the central section and the side sections so as to adapt the side sections to slide lengthwise on the central section.
2. A sectional grate comprising a central section having grooves in the sides thereof providing undercut anges, and longitudinal side sections having incut tongues fitting in the grooves so as to adapt the side sections to slide lengthwise on and to interlock with the central section.
3. A sectional grate comprising a central section having longitudinal dovetail grooves in the sides thereof providing undercut flanges and longitudinal side sections having IOO dovetail tongues fitting in the grooves so as to having tongues fitting in the grooves so as to adapt the side sections to slide lengthwise on adapt the side sections to slide lengthwise on and to interlock with, the central section. and to interlock with, the central section. 4. A sectional grate comprising a central CAREY PATTERSON. 5 section having V-shaped ridges, and inclined Witnesses:
lianges, providing grooves and extensions to L. R. PEEL, the ridges, and longitudinal side sections JESSE AUSTEN.
