"To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. HEANY, acitizen of the United States, residing atthe city of Philadelphia,in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in theY Manufacture of Solenoid or other Electric Coils, of which the following is a specification. Myinvention has relation to the manufacture of windingsfora spool or coil to be'used for electromagnets, ysolenoids, and the like; and in such connection it relates to the'construction and arrangement of such a winding.
By my present invention the wire, uncovered ornaked, is laidfn'pon'the spool spirally and properly spaced. The wire is Wound tightly upon a sheet or layer of asbestos or similar non-combustible insulating material, so as to preferably sink or embed itself to a more or less ,extent in said sheet, and then the spaces between the wire coils, as well as the exposed surface of the wire itself, are completely iilled and covered with a paste or cement consisting of a non-combustible, iusulating, and waterproof mixture, the principal ingredients of which are a suitable oxid and sodium silicate or its equivalent as a binding agent,which mixture readily hardens and unites or cements with the wire and under heat will not be dissipated, peel, or crack off from the wire or lose its other 'characteristic properties.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, which illustrates in plan View, partly broken away and partly sectioned, a spool or coil embodying the main features of my invention.

In carrying out my invention there is first laid around the Vaxis d a sheet or layer h of asbestos or similar non-combustible insulating material.- Upon this sheet or layer b is then spirally wound a bare or uncovered Wire d to constitute a Section of the solenoid-coil. This Vwire d is wound upon the layer h, preferably with sufficient tightness or tension as covered with a paste or cement e.

A preferred` mixture contains sodium silicate as a binding agent with a metallic oxid, such as manganese oxid added thereto, as a base'and the whole formed into a Viscous or semiluid mass.
